Used to be a small mom and pop grocery and was so good they became a restaurant. The sushi is super fresh and made to order and they also have delicious Ramen, katsu, danburry (not sure how that's spelled lol). The tempura soft shell crab is amazing! Also had the steak, shitake and fresh tofu and wow! The tofu was like a cloud or a pillow. So good.Vegetarian options: Lots of clearly labeled vegetarian and vegan sushi. Tons of varieties. Lots of things like natto and pickled plum that you cannot find at other sushi places. This is an old Berkeley buisness and with vegetarian sushi they know what they're doing!Dietary restrictions: Gluten free soy sauce can be requested and then about 75% of the menu is gluten free. Sushi chef is in another section from where the hot food is cooked so no cross contamination.

We did a sushi platter from Musashi and it was very filling! We got the Nigiri Sushi combo in Large 25/45 pcs. (4-5 persons) size and it very much fed 4 people with some to spare. It was our first time doing a sushi platter and it had a great variety. The only note is that the fish to rice ratio is not great - lots of rice to eat fish bite (but that is to be expected I suppose for a sushi platter perhaps)? We also had tempura appetizer and that was a yum variety. If I want a sushi platter again, I would come here because it was acceptable (but also because I'm not sure there are a lot of party tray places)

Very reliable and simple Japanese restaurant right off of shaddock. We live nearby and frequent this place. It’s pretty simple Japanese dishes, but it’s all executed well with good ingredients at a reasonable price. The atmosphere depends a little on where you sit. The color temperature on their light fixtures are not consistent and you could get stuck under a colder (bluish hue) light, which isn’t ideal. There is sometimes an out door table or two, which is great if you have a dog. Overall - it is a passable ambiance.Service is solid with friendly staff.Overall - it’s a good spot. We keep coming back.Vegetarian options: Lots of items available that are just veggie (tempuras, robata, etc…)

f you're searching for an authentic and extraordinary sushi experience in Berkeley, look no further than Musashi. I recently had the pleasure of dining at this hidden gem, and it exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a remarkable culinary adventure. Allow me to share my unforgettable experience with you.The moment I stepped into Musashi, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The traditional Japanese decor, complete with wooden accents and soft lighting, created a serene and intimate ambiance that enhanced the dining experience. The attention to detail was impeccable, setting the stage for what was to come. The chefs behind the counter were true artisans, meticulously crafting each piece of sushi with skill and precisionWhat truly stood out was the creativity in the menu. While maintaining the essence of traditional sushi, Musashi infused their own unique twist to each dish, incorporating innovative flavor combinations that delighted my taste buds. Treat yourself to a dining experience like no other and immerse yourself in the world of exquisite sushi at Musashi.

Catering one of my last meetings of the year, I knew I wanted to go big! Having catered from other local Asian businesses, I wanted to find one that specialized in Japanese cuisine. Musashi is a place I frequent often not just because of their amazing dinner special (5-7 PM), but also since I've tried a lot of dishes I can't find elsewhere. While they're sadly only open for dinner and closed on Sunday & Monday, they were happy to assist me with my catering order. I went in-person and talked with one of their staff to find items that would please a wide variety of tastes and dietary needs. I ended up choosing their yakisoba, tofu salad, chicken karaage, ginger pork, shrimp tempura, and variety of sushi. Happy to say this was a success among my guests with the chicken karaage being a huge crowd pleaser!I haven't seen other pictures of their party trays before so if you're interested in sizing, this will give you an idea of how much food you'd get. Musashi is a small hole in the wall restaurant on a residential street with limited seating and can get quite busy, so get in earlier or make a reservation if needed. Also a huge fan of their unagi wappa and side dishes they give out before each meal

What a hidden gem at Berkeley! This is by far the best sushi restaurant I've been to thats semi close to the campus. The portion size is great and the pricing is fair. I got the soft shell crab for appetizer and tried their chirashi and soboro. This was one of the best soft shell crabs I've ever had. Their batter is a little thick but the flavor is great! Their chirashi had a large variety of fish. They have two pieces for each fish so it was a fun bowl to share with someone to try all the fish out. The sushi rice underneath was perfectly cooked and seasoned. This was my first time trying mappa and the soboro one was very good and comforting. I love that they include the chawanmushi, which was very very silky smooth and delcious. I think the chirashi was very worth the price. It was $29 for a huge bowl of fish and even after sharing half, I was stuffed afterwards. Definitely would come back again.

Not bad at all, good for American standards!Remember to ask for a less salty broth when you order any soup dishes.

Don’t typically write reviews but for something rated so highly I expected so much more. Truly, one of the worst sushi places I’ve ever been to. Our avocado was browning, our rice mushy and overcooked, the fish was flavorless. Our ramen was overly salty with just 3 pieces of meat. We spent $65 for two people (two rolls and a ramen) and left hungry and dissatisfied. The service was horrible. We stood waiting for 20 minutes with our name on a list before anyone even acknowledged us, just to sit at the bar that was open the whole time we were there. Food took forever and was an overall expensive and unenjoyable experience.

They have a really great and fresh fish selection. Including some hard to find varieties. Always made with care and delicious.A nice selection of sake as well.
