Like so many residents of the east bay was very happy that vital vittles returned to our local grocery store under new ownership. I purchased a loaf of whole wheat bread and within three days it started to mold two days before the expiration date. It was stored in a cool, dark place, and there was really no reason for this contacted the owners of the bakery through their website no reply. I have to say I’m truly disappointed the bread is still good, but if it turns moldy like that, I won’t be buying it again.

Five stars but… they were closed when I arrived. I got there during the working hours stated here and they weren’t open. I called the number on their sign outside and no one picked up. Don’t know what the deal is and come to think about it, I’ve never seen the gate open. So maybe they no longer have a retail side??

CLOSED?Months ago I'd found their bread in my Santa Cruz store but on last visit there was none and other products where it had been. Sadly my grocery reports that VV has closed. Maybe thsts best. I will admit that it was not very good and it would be a shame to continue if they can't turn out decent quality food that we know they had. There is so little "real" bread left on grocery shelves.

I arrived around 12:00 p.m. when it said that the store was open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. I opened up the door and entered and a woman yelled at me that they were closed and when I asked if they were just closed early today or to try and get more information she just kept shaking her head and schooled me out, I won't be back for sure

A few months ago I read the news of VV permanently closing down operations. I was mortified. However, it seems the bakery is still functioning normally. Hooray! Best bread by far in the Bay Area, in my opinion. Real Bread, unparalleled. I hope the business, whether it has been sold to new owners or not (I am now confused as to what actually occurred), finds a way to continue as such.

Best bread in the world, imo : )Hearty, healthful, fresh, delicious. They stone grind their own (hard red winter) wheat, and you can taste the difference freshly ground flour makes. A good variety, all whole grain. My favorite bakery. Never a line too!
This family bakery store is a great place. Loaves of whole grain bread, muffins, rolls and cookies are sold to the public here. Be sure to bring cash. That's the only payment accepted.

No sliced bread compares from a nutritional, flavor and texture profile. The 3 seed bread is my favorite in particular. You can buy straight from the bakery. In SF I typically get at rainbow foods

I have visited a couple times since Berkeleyside featured Vital Vittles: This is the best whole wheat bread I have had. Because they use fresh milled flour, it doesn't have the same bitter, dense flavor as retail breads like Oroweat or Dave's Killer Bread, which is what I usually get. I've tried a loaf of the raisin bread and a loaf of the 3 seed - both great for breakfast toast. I did have an issue with the 3 seed slice falling apart in the toaster like a previous reviewer. I learned the key is to toast it on its side and it comes out whole. A loaf of fresh bread is less than $6. There are a couple free parking spots in their lot (or plenty of metered street parking). There hasn't been a line the two times I went on a weekday afternoon - really easy to get in and out. Note this is where they bake everything so it looks more like a production facility than an Instagrammable bakery.
