Disappointing portion sizes. I bought 4 rolls (California Roll, Tempura Roll, Jalapeño Jumper Roll, Greenie Roll) for ~$40, which at any other sushi joint will usually comfortably feed us. However, Hoshi Sushi is *very* stingy with their serving sizes and the most expensive special rolls had 5 slices each. The rolls were frankly very good, but the bang per buck ratio was low.

Hoshi Sushi is a Japanese restaurant in a part of El Cerritos where it's extremely easy to pass it by. Parking is limited to the streetside, but Hoshi Sushi is also accessible by the southbound AC Transit 72. The restaurant is of a moderate size: it can host a modest number of people but still maintain a somewhat cozy and warm atmosphere. I went for dinner last night and ordered the Alaska Roll and Smoke Salmon Sushi. The food was OK/average. The Alaska Roll looked like it had a lot of rice and not as much of the salmon that makes up the center of the roll. The salmon sushi had a somewhat strong salmon flavor it, but the meat didn't taste all that fresh to me. The reason why I'm rating it 4/5 stars though is because the service is extremely friendly and helpful. A waiter was always standing watch to make sure that if any one table needed attention that it would be immediately attended to. I decided that merited a star in of itself. I appreciate that the restaurant staff provide a free candy snack when the bill is delivered to your table. I received a whole stick of Hi-Chews my first time here, and a bag of Hello Panda Chocolate on my most recent visit. All in all, Hoshi Sushi is a decent place to have Japanese restaurant. Although I wouldn't say it had the best Japanese food I've had, it makes it up for having an attentive and friendly staff.
