The lotus salad is good but I would ask for the dressing on the side. The crispy fried tofu is just silken tofu that’s fried, which was surprising to us.The service was really nice.Food came out fast.

I was craving Canh Chua and googled Canh Chua and Hoa Sen popped up first on the list. I came in and noticed it was vegetarian but most vegetarians I know eat fish. I ordered Canh Chua ca and ca kho to. I made it a point to repeat ca and the waiter even asked if I wanted Tom but I said ca. Never once did he say it was tofu. When the dish came out and I noticed it was tofu I asked if I could return it and the waiter asked me to try it first. I tried the Canh and thought it was too sweet but ok and the tofu ca kho was not good. I asked to return the ca kho for another dish. The waiter then told me I can’t return it because I already tried a piece. WTH?! They need to put tofu fish not fish or tofu shrimp not shrimp. Horrible experience.

Tonight is the fourth time I’ve been upset by the low quality of food here. Each time it’s been a “chicken” or “fish” dish with sauce. The flavor is always bland and they reuse the same proteins so they don’t have a distinct flavor and are plainly seasoned so you have to rely on their boring sauces which don’t help. The flavors aren’t infused and the last dish I tried the “sauce” was so thin, like the consistency of water, it didn’t coat the protein. It just kept sliding off the fish lol and onto my plate. The fish, for example, is always the same old seaweed wrapped soy protein regardless of the dish. It’s so different and average compared to other vegan restaurants in the area that make the protein and sauce unique to the dish. I ordered an item from the special rice dishes section and strangely they didn’t give me rice yet I paid for it?And what’s up with not putting the prices on the to go receipt? I know for a fact they overcharged me several dollars on my last visit but I’m not going to stand in their dirty, crowded restaurant and argue over it. I once ordered bbq pork spring rolls, happy salad and the mushroom chicken clay pot and the worker told me it was $39. This has happened a few times so go in knowing what it should cost (since you won’t get a receipt) and possibly be ready to argue. I shouldn’t have to point out the prices to them and they should be more transparent/ethical by including an itemized receipt.I usually get the happy salad which is pretty good but only if the proteins are fresh since sometimes the included tofu strips taste slightly off. The dragonfruit leaves salad is good but it’s drenched in dressing which takes away from the textures. The bbq pork spring rolls are fine too. One of the popular dishes, the chicken and mushroom clay pot, is way too sweet for me and I don’t like the texture nor do I feel it tastes even close to chicken and has a spongy mouth feel. I also would have liked to be able to taste the mushroom better. Many employees speak English but I’ve had two orders where there was a bit of a language barrier. With these things said they are popular but, in my opinion and except for a few dishes, nothing special. There are a lot of vegan meat substitutes and options available now and many are quite good and convincing but Hoa Sen just seems to play it safe. They seem to rely on just tofu and the texture can be too soft to taste like real meat. I’ve tried many dishes over the last six years but I’d describe the majority as “meh” and not deserving of my money. In addition the workers here mess up and there’s usually something missing from my order (tonight my rice was missing and other times it’s my sauce or the chips for the salad) so double check your to-go orders because it’s annoying when you pay for something but don’t get it.

It was disappointing! The presentation was not good enough to make believe it was shrimp or fish. The cá kho tộ (braised salty caramel fish) did not look like fish. There was some pretending fish skin which was chewy but not tasty. The dish was sub par.The canh chua hải sản (seafood sweet and sour soup) was acceptable. The gỏi rau tiến vua ( dragonfruit leaves salad) was not well seasoned, it was mostly sour, nothing to balance it.It was so unappetizing that the three of us could not finish our orders.Vegetarian options: It's all vegetarian dishes. But they are sub par compared to other vegetarian places.Parking: Parking in front of the restaurant.

It was disappointing! The presentation did not look like the make-believe fish or fish paste. The taste was just one dimension, either too salty (salty caramel fish) or too sour (soup and salad). The cá kho tộ (braised salty caramel fish) did not look like fish. There was some pretending fish skin which was chewy but not tasty. The dish was sub par. The canh chua hải sản (seafood sweet and sour soup) was acceptable. The shrimp in the soup was the best of the other ingredients, in term of look and taste. The fried fish cake in the soup was chewy and pretty bland. The gỏi rau tiến vua ( dragonfruit leaves salad) was not well seasoned, it was mostly sour, nothing to balance it. The fried fish cake was chewy. It was so unappetizing that the three of us could not finish our orders. We eat vegetarian a lot and this is one place we will never come back to and will never recommend to anybody.

I’m pretty sure they overcharged me. I looked at the online menu before ordering and my total was a bit under $30 but in the restaurant it was almost $40. I was in a hurry so I didn’t even realize I didn’t get a receipt so I’ll never know why the price was much higher even factoring in tax. Sun vegan in fountain valley is much better so I don’t think I’ll be back.
