Decent enough Mexican restaurant, most notable for the friendly but businesslike service: they take care of you without fawning. I felt very comfortable there. Ordered the chicken mole. The sauce was very thin and rather bland. The chicken was a small thigh and leg and two chunks of breast meat (both a bit dry, both with bone). Rice, beans, thick tortillas. Food was OK.

Came to San Francisco this morning for the Carnavale Parade. As I was walking by Chava's, I could smell something good cooking. Ordered the Chicken Pozole Soup as it was cold and overcast. What a treat to get delicious homeade food and handmade tortillas! And the owner was a gracious lady. Bravo Chava's! It hit the spot.

2 stars because their salsa was good and service was decent. I went in there with my boyfriend for a late lunch and we asked the server if they had vegan options which he said they did. I ordered a veggie tostada and Michelada and my boyfriend ordered veggie tacos. The tostada was a very sad excuse of a tostada that had maybe 10 beans total on it. There were also large chunks of beef mixed into the beans and vegetables on the tostada. Sadly the veggie tostada was anything but and came with a unwanted side of beef pieces. I would recommend taqueria San Jose across the street. Their veggie have never disappointed.

This was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The chips were from a bag and cold and they charged extra for them. The Macacha was awful and again everything was cold. The tortillas was warm when they arrived but after a few minutes they became hard. The only thing positive was the nice gentleman who was my waiter.

Awesome food. Friendly staff. Not crowded. Chilaquiles are on point. Birria al horno is yummy. Tacos de camarones (super) are to die for.

We were so excited to eat in the Mission. The food tasted processed instead of authentic. The ceviche is supposed to be marinated shrimp in lemon juice that gets cooked through the juice so it's semi raw which I love. The picture on the menu showed this but when I received it, it was chopped up cooked shrimp smothered in ketchup. Yuck! Ceviche doesn't have ketchup! It has tomatoes, onion and peppers. Sometimes I've seen it with cucumber too which I can take it or leave it. A drink called champurrado was made with too much flour. ? The tortillas for tacos were store bought and not the good kind.

The meal was very good. Our server did not speak very fluent English, but he did his best. The melted cheese with the chips was delicious. However, they only took cash, no credit cards! I was glad I had enough to pay!

Had bad experience here. They never said cash only. I only found out when I paid the bill. Then they were hostile as if I was trying to cheat them. I had to give them ID and go all the way back and get cash. It is obvious to me that they only take cash to cheat on tax. So low.

I would not recommend this place. Used to come her for menudo once in a while and was good. Went there today and ordered menudo and pozole. Pozole Tasted like they just heated up some chicken bullion and added carnitas and hominy. The menudo the same thing tasted like chicken bullion. Very very disappointed. Especially spending 60.00 on this crappy pozole and menudo. What a rip off

Delicious homemade meals. When they offer you handmade tortillas in a Mexican restaurant, you know that’s gonna be a good meal.I tried the chilaquiles and they were made with the handmade tortillas. You can taste the freshness in every bite.Machaca con huevos was also very delicious.Chorizó con huevos was on point.Much better than the machaca from San Diego’s Rudford’s restaurant.

Some of the best Mexican food we've ever eaten. My husband had a combination platter consisting of a beef enchilada and a Chile relleno. I had Milanesa chicken. Both dishes were excellent! And we didn't have to stand in a long line to get in. The service was as good as the food--friendly and accommodating. We highly recommend this restaurant. Also the murals were so fine!

It is very nice to walk from home to a restaurant and be greeted by your name. I can assure you, if you repeat your visit to Chava’s the owner Elba would remember your name as well !!Yes! I have being a client of Chava’s for at least 15 years and the food has always being consistent.Excellent Mexican traditional dishes, healthy soups and awesome seafood cocktails coastal Mexican style besides the allways fresh “aguas de frutas”In the picture:A breaded fish filet with French fries, salad and a side of frijolitos de la olla. Is a special order and the friendly cooks are always happy to please a client!
