Bittersweet to see this business is closing on the 29th of this month. I sure need to come by for another burrito fix before they do! I will sure miss everything about this place. The homemade salsa, the fresh and flavorful ceviches, the protein plates, handmade tortillas, and mostly THE GIGANTIC BURRITOS!!! The place was small, yet quiet, the food was freakin great. The caldo de res was perfect. ? Nice mixture of beef that fell apart when you cut it as it should, potatoes, etc. Just great. ??
3.5 stars overall, but rounding up for the LOWEST prices I've seen for Mexican food in a while, and solid tacos! This is likely NOT the place you'll want to go if looking for a healthy meal since both the burrito and tacos were quite greasy, but hey, with grease comes flavor.. Chavelas definitely fits the definition for hole-in-the-wall, and they are located a few blocks outside of Downtown San Jose.
