Great food great owners
To start the guy that was taking orders ignored me. Then proceeded to take his mask off to finally take my order. Ordered a tri tip sandwich and pulled pork sandwich. One with baked beans one with pasta salad. Tri tip, dry and unflavorful, very tough meat. Pulled pork, unflavorful and full of hard gristle chunks. Portion size, horrible, both sandwiches well undersized for price. Baked beans ok. Pasta salad ok. Will give them another chance and choose different items but expectations are low. Could be a great restaurant hope they figure it out.
Ok, but not great. Better to have bbq sauce in a little cup than the stingy amount squirted on top. Broccoli salad was good. Hot or spicy cole slaw was again too dry. Let's be a bit more generous with the sauces. The ribs were tender but no seasonings.
When I went for dinner, all they had was pulled pork. It was pretty good, admittedly. When I went for lunch and wanted ribs, they said it would take 30 minutes. I waited because I originally went there for the ribs. When I got them, 1 piece was cooked decently, but the others were kinda dry. The slaw tasted kinda stale. Overall, not bad, but there's better options.
Favorite BBQ place. Local Beer on tap. Dog friendly back yard. Great food and reasonable price.
Best baby back ribs in town! Good beers and sides too, especially the black bean and corn salad. Friendly folks. They make a great hamburger, too.
Great bbq n service and great outdoor area
Its truly a hole in the wall of a restaurant! We definitely had some key items that we enjoyed and some that we felt needed some additional seasoning. Bomb items- the meats! The pulled pork was flavorful and well-cooked. The brisket was tender! The ribs had bomb flavor, tender and meaty- generous portion for the price. The hot links were lit! For the sides- the sweet potatoes fries were bomb and baked beans were good! The mac and cheese and potato salad needed some additional seasoning for us. We were disappointed on the chicken wings- some of them were undercooked and way tooo much sauce covered them.
Great food. I usually get the pork ribs and they are cooked perfectly every time. Try the mustard sauce. Service is great too. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes BBQ.
Burger and service was great at this local eatery.
When the power went out for a bit in Santa Cruz due to some (barely) nasty winds, my friend and I decided to drive out towards Capitola to seek some refuge in food and electricity. We decided that Holy Smokes would be a BBQ spot that we'd check out simply because we had been craving some good meat. Based on the reviews online, it looked like the spot was recently opened only a few months back. Time to add another solid review to the bunch. You order at the counter and food gets delivered to your table. Everything from the meats to the sides can be ordered a la carte, or you could do a platter for a similar price. We went with their large Combo ($30) which includes brisket, pork belly, two ribs, links, two sides, and toast. Man that's a lot of food and totally worth it for two people to share and try all their meats. The quality of their meat here is undeniable but best eaten when it's hot and fresh. I loved their brisket and ribs especially and found the pork belly passable but good (it was a lot tougher than I would have liked). The slaw was a great choice of side with the broccoli crunch with bacon being just okay. I'd recommend choosing a different side for the later. A wonderful surprise here was that they had live music playing when we went which was awesome given how small and cozy the restaurant felt. You're in for a real treat when you've got tunes to enjoy while smacking your fingers to some great BBQ. Holy Smokes is definitely a solid choice for BBQ in the Santa Cruz area and one I'd be happy to return back again in the future.
Quite frankly, the beast and meatiest baby back ribs out there... the rub, slow-smoke TLC and light basting reflect the passion and experience of the cook(s). Most BBQ houses trim back their baby backs to near the bone - not Holy Smokes. I could not believe how thick yet tender they were. Five stars!
