Suzanne is fantastic, our families favorite servers from anywhere in town. Always makes the customers experience the priority, keep up the good work. When our daughters are back to visit we look forward to our time together at Izakaya because we know the food is on point and it will be a great experience.

We needed a private party room for a Celebration of Life within a week's notice. Shogun/Izakaya was her favorite place. Addison, Alexis, and staff were absolutely hospitable and wonderful hosts. They worked with us on a sushi buffet, a toast, and using their screen for a slide show. They thought of all the details and worked with us on seating arrangements and made sure all of our needs were met. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect celebration. A million thanks! -Family of Rita Welch

It's good the sushi portion is not worth the price but the variety of the menu is really cool my favorite is the ramen they have. And it's also a great date spot

I was visiting Rockford and looking for a place to eat. I found a restaurant called Shogun online. The menu looked good, so I decided to give it a try. It was a little bit confusing at first, as there appeared to be two restaurants inside the same space. One was Shogun and the other was Izakaya 88. Both had open seating signs posted. I asked at the counter, and it was explained that it's not really two separate restaurants and that it's just a matter of preference as to which "restaurant" atmosphere one prefers. The Shogun side was bright, more basic in terms of decor, and more communal in its layout. The Izakaya 88 side was dim, had lovely modern decor, and was more private. I opted for Izakaya. I ordered the shrimp tacos, vegan ramen, and a sushi dragon roll. Although more Tex-Mex than Asian, the tacos were quite tasty and the amount of shrimp included was generous. The vegan ramen was also good. The broth and noodles were flavorful. Both the tacos and ramen were good values for the price charged. As far as the sushi dragon roll, it was just okay. Not bad, but I imagine that if I were trying sushi for the first time, I'd think to myself it's okay but not something I'd go out of my way for. Which is unfortunate, because I'm quite fond of sushi and, in particular, this style of roll. As to what made the roll just okay, I think it was a few things. The tempura had gotten soggy and didn't hold up well. There was actually a lot of tempura batter that overpowered the flavor of the other ingredients. As for the other ingredients, I feel like the proportions were off (and too little for the price of the roll). Also, the eel sauce wasn't as good as others I've tried, but this might just be a subjective preference. As far as service, it was good. The server was friendly. The food came out all at once (I hadn't specified an order) and was brought out by bus persons. When the server came to check on how everything was, it was just after the food had arrived. So, I think another stop further into my meal would have been nice. Overall, I had a good experience and would recommend this restaurant. Maybe don't get the dragon roll though.Vegetarian options: Vegan ramen.

We have a group ordering both steak and chicken, the meat was not tender at all, very disappointing. The environment is nice, with lots of fancy decorations. Nice service.

Been here dozens of times and they usually knock it out of the park with the food. Always 5 stars. Not so much this time. My wife decided to try the salmon with the fried rice, steak, shrimp, veggies, and udon noodle hibachi. It was beyond fishy. I got a few appetizers and the tonkatsu ramen. The ramen broth was over the top salty. No bueno

Restaurant has two seperate space, one for live chefs cooking on hot oven and the other part is standard restaurant style that you order from Menu. We enjoyed having our cook prepared front of us with lots of fun with the chef entertaining actions and also having our meal cooked! The portions are generous and delicious but there is some room for improving food quality to become perfect! But all togher food and atmosphere are great! Go for it

I've been to Shogun at least 50 times in my life maybe more. I was eating there last night in the cafe not at the hibachi table, and I had the worst dining experience I've ever had. I ordered what I usually get dinner for 2 with scallops and and a sushi roll the BSCR. The soup was fine, the salad was fine, the sushi was fine. When the dinner came out it was very quickly for a busy night. That left me feeling a little suspicious. I assume the noodles were fine I gave them to my friend. The shrimp, the scallops, the vegetables seemed to be fine. The steak and the chicken however were basically INEDIBLE. And I tried because usually I love this restaurant. My friend took 2 bites spit almost all of that steak into her napkin. Tried one bite of chicken spit that out. I wanted it to be OK so I tried to find some bites that were OK. It really was not. Probably the biggest disappointment was the management. Anna was our server she was fine. Although I think she whisked my plate away pretty quickly. Manager Lydia came to ask how the food was. As a result of the WORST meal I've ever had there, I was offered a remake of the food (neither of us wanted to eat more of that) and a $20 gift for the next time. A meal at Shogun for 2 people can easily get to $80. I was shocked. 3 times in my whole life have I ever been upset enough to ask for a refund on a meal. I even admitted that we ate the vegetables we ate the shrimp the scallops and asked for only half of the meal to be comped. Another manager came out Addison I believe his name was. I was told that because I had eaten most of my chicken and steak that they normally wouldn't do anything. I had no plate to prove him different. The fact that almost all of the chicken and most of the steak that my friend had were visible on her plate seem to make no difference. I have never been treated so poorly, spoken to so dismissively in a restaurant EVER. EAT IN THE SHOGUN CAFE AT OWN YOUR OWN RISK! The chicken and steak again were inedible, and the "manager" Addison should be embarrassed.

The atmosphere is dark and cool. Good place for a first date or anniversary. What we had.Spicy Seafood Udon Soup: hearty, filling and spicy. Would recommend.Pork belly: Best part of the meal.Egg rolls: crispy, on the smaller side but good with the sauce.Garlic rice bowl with chicken: Delicious with enough heat.Korean tacos: Flavors were good. My wife enjoyed them. Small portion.Burger: Two small burgers. Quality beef and unique flavors.Overall very pricey for what it is. You are paying 35% for the food and 65% for the atmosphere.

This is a great place to enjoy the Hibachi meal as your chef cooks and entertains. Having dinner with a small group around the grill adds to the fun, whether you know them or not. We came as a couple and left with friends, plus enjoyed a delicious meal at a decent price. The dinner for two was less than $50 and we took home enough for another meal: steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, veggies, rice and a chef that made it fun. Highly recommend it! The staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. We went on a Saturday night and the place was crowded, with people constantly coming in. Obviously, a popular place, so if you want it a little less hectic, go during the week, but do go!
