Ended up Downtown Detroit for “Opening Day” The atmosphere was still lit ?. Lafayette Coney Island had no dine in so we hit American right next door. Great choice ?? ??. Immediately was greeted, got a table and was greeted by “Red”. Had to get a couple coneys and a chilli cheese fry. American Coney also serve beer so I had to get a Modelo ? Gotta go here for the experience if you Downtown Detroit! Until next time, “Let’s Eat!”Parking: The parking structure across the street was $35 on Opening Day which was more than our meal at American Coney Island. That’s actually wild when you think about it, but that’s the GREAT WAY in the Unites States of America. Safe parking is more than food ??

What's the hype? Why do people debate over what is the best of these two? Hood coney is better. You get more for less.I don't understand why I agreed to come here with my family to pay 13$ for a small plate of bland Chilli cheese fries (cheapest frozen fries) and two coney (natural casing). Just all around like a purgatory experience. Hood coney are always better than this.

American Coney island has always been the superior choice vs Lafayette Coney island next door.3/2024 update:My companion got a Greek Salad. Tiniest salad you ever saw for $9. (See pics). No beets, chickpeas or onions like one would expect in a Greek.Brewed Ice Tea was ultra weak.Coney and Loose Coney were both delicious.Fries were excellent.Red was our server, did a great job.Recommended

Detroit Coney Island war is still afoot, and this time we are trying one of the originals. According to my sources, American Coney Island is supposed to be no 1 in Detroit. The restaurant has been around in this location since 1917, and the space is filled with pieces of memorabilia from its long history. Apparently the restaurant is still owned by the original family, so that fact alone makes it cool.We ordered a bowl of chili, a Coney, and American Special (which is a Coney with some extra ground beef on top). According to my research, the top secret recipe produced chili with stronger peppery taste compared to other contenders. However, I found my chili that day to be rather bland, lacking in the peppery flavour or any kind of "kick". Maybe I had a bad batch? But it was disappointing nonetheless. The sausages were great, but sadly overshadowed by the bland chili. The ground beef on the American Special added additional texture to the standard Coney, but I found the ground beef to be tasteless as well.The girl serving our table was friendly and quick with her service, so credit to her. But despite the friendly service, I was quite let down by the food. Again, it might have been an off day, so I wouldn't say I won't visit again in the future.
