I had the opportunity to have lunch at Fred's yesterday afternoon. It seems to be run like a mom and pop's restaurant run by a family which is fine. The restaurant itself is cramped and there was a funky smell we couldn't place. My daughter said it smelled like feet and I have to agree. The drink machines weren't working and the other drink options weren't great. Also, they have a menu on their website, but most of those items listed are not available in the restaurant. What you get is a daily menu that consists of mainly sandwiches and salad. Again fine. I ordered a salad and my husband ordered a club sandwich. Apparently they were tired of making salads because I could hear someone, possibly the manager yelling out "Another salad! I guess today's a salad day." Okay...anyway, I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation of the food, my salad looked really good and tasted great. My husband was happy with his sandwich also. As I was enjoying my food I happened to look at the plate and noticed some black discoloration on the edges of the plate that resembled mold. My husband tried to tell me that they were probably made that way, but I can't imagine any manufacturer looking at that and thinking...hmmm, that looks good enough to eat of of. I asked the waitress and she said they were recycled bamboo plates and they come that way. I can't for the life of me find an image of a bamboo plate with this type of "natural design". I believe it was mold on my plate, but I'll let you decide.

My family agrees we just had the best biscuits we have ever had, including grandmamas. Sunday buffet was tasty. Everyone friendly.

We visit beech mountain every year. We love the grocery store - it has everything we need during our stay and absolutely love their deli. The food is awesome, the service is great, prices are reasonable. Can't wait to go back next year.

Unique old shop and Cafe. The breakfast sandwich was good, though small. Long line to order and wait for food. Cinnamon rolls are a bit overhyped. They ran out of a bunch of side item staples on their menu.

This place is tucked behind / below Fred's mercantile. You can get there by walking around the backside of the building on the outdoor patio, or walking through the mercantile store and going down the inside stairs. They serve good hot food. For breakfast, southern style biscuits, grits, gravy, eggs, bacon, toast. For lunch, my kids "loved" the grilled cheese sandwich on the kids menu. I had a Rueben which was perfect. Both lunch items came with a side of lays chips. We went upstairs to shop in the mercantile store while we waited for our food (to go) to be ready. Just fyi - They sell coffee there but not fancy cappuccino's / mochas / etc (If you want a local Starbucks type coffee drinks, I recommend First Chair coffee shop for fancy fluffy cappuccino drinks). The ambience is a mix of rustic and eclectic, plenty of skiers around at tables that appear to eat here before going to the slopes. The ski shop is just next door, in the same building downstairs.

Was expecting a quick meal but instead waited for 30 min for 2 biscuits . The staff is very unresponsive and immature and I personally will never step foot in it again . Also to note after 30 minutes of waiting the food came out cold.Overall very poor establishment we with what appears to be very poor management.

We popped in here for a quick treat. I got a coffee and cookies to split with the kids. Coffee was okay but they only had Coffee Mates and not regular half and half and it was too sweet for my liking. The young lady at the register apologized and let me just swap it for a soda instead. It's a really cute little stop and the cookies were pretty tasty!

I really wanted to live this place, the general store is so awesome I thought the dinner would be too... first they were out of biscuits, so I ordered a waffle but they were out if waffles, so I got the big breakfast with home fries - then after a 45 min wait they came by the table to say they were out of home fries... when the food did come it was cold - I will say the bacon was delicious even cold

Not a lot of food choices in early November in the Beech Mountain area , but luckily we found this one. The restaurant is located in the lower level of the building. The upper level is something equivalent to a country general store. Our food was tasty and presented timely. The restaurant closes at 3:00 so breakfast and lunch are the only available meals . We had planned to return for breakfast on Sunday, but It was way too busy. We were on our way home and did not want to wait an hour or more.

This hidden gem of a restaurant is in the basement of a general store! It was the morning our trip was coming to an end, so I was a bit sad until we walked in here. The store is adorable and has a little bit of everything! I admired the produce and the trinkets, and then walked down the enclosed stairs to find an open layout with what looked to be a beautiful outside sitting area as well. I didn't go outside because it was cold and rainy. You order at a counter and the choices are pretty simple. I had some disappointing biscuits and gravy the day before, so I wanted to give them a shot. The food came out fast and hot, it was tasty and fresh and well executed. My biscuits were perfect covered in that creamy gravy. Sometimes it doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be good. There were some local gentlemen sitting here enjoying Sunday breakfast and I could tell this is the kind of place that maybe the older generation comes to slow down and have a good meal. I loved everything about this place!

If they don't have it you don't need it! They have everything! I'm so glad I caught Fred there as he was a wonderful friend to my dad, one of his best friends. It was great catching up. I could spend hours browsing the store or just sitting in one of the many areas. The view is gorgeous, the restaurant serves fantastic food. One stop shopping on top of Beech Mtn.
