It’s unbelievable they’re still only doing take out since Covid began. It’s almost like they don’t want the business. Definitely lost a customer. Used to be my favorite sushi spot but I’m not coming all the way to Upper Montclair for take out.

Very consistent place! I have been a client for over 6 years, and they kept high quality, even during lockdown times. Sushi/sashimi are better options than heated dishes. Dinner bento boxes offer you multiple options to try a little bit of everything at a fair price. Go for it!

We’ve been eating from and in Daikichi since we moved to Montclair in the 1990’s. Our favorite sushi. Fast delivery and very good food. We love this place!

We used to go to Dai-Kichi when it was located in the downstairs space below where it is now. We enjoyed many meals there and brought our young kids who loved it. They also had a liquor license so we would order sake and/or beer with our meals. It was "the place" in Upper Montclair - we would run into neighbors often and always had a good time. About 2018 things started to go downhill. We were given a gift card and had misplaced it for a while and when it was located it was expired. Most places these days - by law or just because it is fair - will still honor gift cards after their expiration. We called ahead and asked whether this would be the case and were assured it would be honored. We had a good meal but they would not take the gift card. The owner came over to tell us this and apologized that we were told otherwise, offered a 10% discount instead. A friend spent real $$$ on the gift card and evidently the restaurant just kept it. We weren't happy but the owner wouldn't budge.Since then we avoid Dai-Kichi. They sold their liquor license and took over the Upstairs place after it closed - we heard it is the same owner. Since the pandemic they have remained takeout only while virtually every other restaurant opened for full service. It is a shame that such a lovely location in our special Upper Montclair Village remains unopened. Also disappointed we lost a liquor license which was taken out of the neighborhood. We now go a bit further for takeout sushi from Koshi in Watchung Plaza which is just as tasty but less expensive. We might try Dai-Kichi again but not until they open up for dine-in.

Clean delicious quality sushi. Seems to be take out only for the moment.

Best sushi, hands down! Very pricey but very willing to overlook this for the tip-top notch quality, consistency, and great customer service; they bring your order out to your car! Note: this restaurant is take-out only. I have been going to Dai Kichi since I was six years old--I am now 20--and it has remained my favorite sushi spot (and restaurant) in Montclair.

I wish I could give this place a million stars. I miss living in Montclair for so many reasons, but Dai Kichi is top 3 reasons why. Always fresh sushi. Always a quick, correct order. Always friendly. Their tuna and ponzu sauce is the best thing I have ever had I may or may not be tearing up writing this review. Dai Kichi FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!

Most of their sushi a bit bland

Since they remodeled, they have gotten way to skimpy with food, i paid almost $90 work of food for 4 house salads and maybe 4 rolls. The food was not enough for 2 people... way too over priced for what you get, pick another place for sushi

Amazing - I cannot fault this place, the sushi lunch box was absolutely perfect. Fresh, tasty sushi, good size portion, delicious salad with very fresh dressing *yum* and even delicious miso, which I normally pass on as I find it salty and unremarkable…errm, not at this place, it was flavorful umami yumminess. I cannot wait to try more of the menu. WOW. Highly recommend- I am delighted!
My FAVORITE sushi takeout spot! Fresh fish and delicious flavors! They knock it out of the park every time!

Our favorite sushi spot, has some of the best special rolls.

Takeout. Tasted like I like ate fresh from the bar. Excellent

Did a takeout. Quality ingredients and fresh. Certainly the best sushi place in the area.

Something has happened to Daikichi! New chef? New Owner? Everything was off in our last order. The baby bok choi was overcooked and the liquid had a poor taste. The shumai was stiff and dry -- maybe reheated from frozen. The nabyaki udon was made with chicken cubes so hard and dry almost inedible. The egg was a hardboiled mixture of yolk and white and the broth was just tasteless. I could go on but you get the point. Can only hope this is a temporary thing.
