A blast from the past! Old, funky, cool type tav I hung out in during college. The music is r&b, so cool! It's like going to the comfortable atmosphere you want to be in, on a stormy night, hanging with friends.

Anthony Bourdain once called this place the best bar in New York City. We came in on a weekend night. Sunny's is on a dark road near the waterfront, dimly lit, although it being the only thing lit on the street made it easier to find. The place was packed with young hipsters and bohemians. We eventually got the bartender's attention and ordered two beers (cost $18.00 - not really dive bar prices, but it's New York). The place is claustrophobic for the amount of people inside. I loved the kitschy décor, big colored light bulbs in strands draping the wall, oddities and interesting pieces of art all over. Some of the customers were rude. As I was retrieving my beers, a guy pushed in front of me to hug some girl at the bar and nearly knocked the beer out of my hand and then wouldn't move for me to retrieve the second beer. The place is broken up into a front bar and back room. In the back room, there was some kind of blue grass performance going on, but it was too crowded to even see it. Head out back down another extremely narrow passageway and there is a very cool courtyard that can accommodate around 30 extra people. I ended up finding a small table to sit outside and finished my beer with my plus one. But we decided to leave after that. I think would have liked to have visited this place in the early evening before the crowds starting converging upon the bar. If you are person who doesn't like being pinned to a wall while struggling to bring a beer up to your lips for fear of having it knocked out of your hands by the constant stream of people coming and going, this might not be your jam. If you are lucky enough to grab a booth, bar stool, or table outside, you may be able to make a night out of it. But it just wasn't my place.

Fate handed me a very very very rare opportunity to do whatever I wanted today. I was planning on going into Manhattan to have dinner (lamb burger maybe?) and a drink at the Ear Inn (1817) in Manhattan. I like the Ear Inn but haven’t visited for a few years. But after due consideration, figured Sunny’s would more easily accommodate me and the pup since I really hated the idea of traveling solo without the dog. Turns out my decision was a wise one. Sunny’s was a super super super chill vibe. Had 2 old fashioned and walked down Van Brunt to check out Fort Defiance and the Good Fork. Definitely enjoyed Sunny’s the most as the highlight of my afternoon/evening. Really good old energy here.

Excellent music bar with a nautical theme. Cheap beer and great bands. Very on brand for Red Hook and very different from most New York bars you've been to!
What a dump. Went to this dive with some friends. Waitresses had unbelievably bad attitudes, arrogant, nasty. Place is trying to be a hipster joint with a lousy attitude. Save your money…..better bars with no attitude within walking distance.

I am sad to write this as a long-time Red Hook resident and frequenter of Sunny’s. Tonight I brought my service dog and was confronted asked the typical questions. Fine. Totally expected. But then we felt watched and harassed, as if they were waiting for the dog to act out (never happened, not a peep). So we left when we finished our first round, and the staff laughed to each other on our way out. Like they proved something. Just mean. I don’t know if they had a bad experience with a poorly behaved dog in the past, but don’t take it out on me. Also it’s cash only which is totally annoying. Otherwise a decent bar.

If I could leave this place 0 stars I would. The bar keep is EXTREMELY rude. Massive egos. Unwelcoming to certain groups of people. Heard them say unkind things about patrons at their bar. Really sad to experience in 2023. Way better bars to frequent near by. Definitely pass.
One of New York's great neighborhood
