Delicious food and virtually everything is vegetarian/vegan friendly! The atmosphere is very pleasant and waitstaff is friendly and attentive. (Also, always a bonus in NYC - bathroom is clean and water warmed quickly!) I will happily return for more next time I’m in New York :)

Great selection of veggie/vegan items, plus a separate Jain menu for those who follow Jainism. Generous portions served piping hot, and the best dosas around. Very personable and knowledgeable owner. All dishes were spiced to perfection, and prices are very reasonable. Dinner for 3 came in around $100 including tip.

The quantities are really small. Had take out of bhel puri that was really tiny, and just had tamarind sauce taste all over... and pav bhaji. They didn't even supply onions and lemon for this and the pav was not toasted. The bhaji was like mixed veg korma. This is surprising because during my dine in experience, the food was really good. With take out, they just didn't put any efforts at all. Won't recommend, esp for take out.

Stumbled upon this cozy South Indian spot for a dosa night. The staff were kind enough to accommodate my visit without a reservation and moved tables around for me. The menu was vast with the souther staples. My order: Plain Rava dosa Gobi Manchurian The dosa was perfect and crispy. The sambar , dosa and coconut chutney lacked salt. The tomato chutney wasn't spicy enough. The Gobi Manchurian was a let down! It was too sweet and tangy. crisp to the right amount on the outside whereas the insides were left uncooked. Ambience was great and customer service was stellar. These dishes lacked authenticity but it makes sense since they were in SoHo and had to contain the spices according to their audiences.

Good food and great service!! We got the masala dosas with lemonade and mango lassi. I feel like the potatoes could have been fresher/more flavorful, but otherwise, really solid food place

Food was authentic. Starters were very good, Dosa was very tasty, one of the best I have had in NYC. We ordered varitey rice and the food was really good. It is in a crowded street, so the ambiance was not great. Food was served hot, and the pricing was on the higher side, which I understand is because of the locality. It's definitely a good Indian vegetarian restaurant. The restrooms were neatly maintained compared to may Indian restaurant which was a pleasant surprise.Vegetarian options: Pure Vegeterian.Dietary restrictions: They also had a Jain menu to suit people with more dietary restrictions even though vegetarian. We'll done.Parking: It's in a crowded street, forget about parking. If lucky can find parking on the street , it's like finding a needle in a haystack.Kid-friendliness: Cramped space, and they did accommodate a high chair. Nothing to specify about kids Friendly options.

Did you know Ananda means delight in Hindi? Guess what? I'm delighted that I finally found a really good Indian restaurant in the heart of Soho. Thompson Street, have to say, is becoming the food Mecca Street with Carbone, Cuba, Red Lion, Arturo.. even a pop up bagel shop where I've heard the bagels are to die for! So you see, you can find most cuisines on Thompson. Thus it's perfectly fitting that Ananda is on Thompson and has wonderful neighbors. I was craving Indian food and Yelped* where I could find a really good place and Ananda popped up. This was the second? third? crisp fall day? We keep going backwards and forwards with weather. Well, IMO, forty degrees means SOUP!!!!! Thus, I stared at Gandhi and he whispered " order the Mulligatawny soup" . I always listen to wise people and I did just that plus onion pakora. The Gobi Manchurian also winked at me but I'll save that dish for a future visit. The pakora was downright delicious and I couldn't stop munching and dipping in the wonderful condiments: mint and cilantro chutney (green) and tamarind chutney ( brown). Munching and dipping... Then my soup came and it was piping hot: lentils, ginger, corn, carrots and coriander. A perfect tonic on a slightly chill day. I ordered garlic naan to go for one of my employees. The service was courteous, the music was soothing ( think massage music) and I love the water decanters that had trees painted on them. All in all a great lunch and nicely priced. I see the Gobi Manchurian in my future... *There was a 10% off order upon Yelp check in and the owner stated it was only during COVID.

The website and menu both advertise that they accommodate vegan, gluten free and other special dietary needs or restrictions. When we were ready to order I asked about a gluten free thali and was told which one it was. My husband ordered a different one. Each one had several different dishes. Someone set them on the table and walked away with no conversation. There were some items on these we had never had the opportunity to try, and we wanted a little explanation. My husband asked the server to tell us what we had been served. It was early, and there was almost no one else there, so she wasn’t busy. She told us about the different dishes, and when she got to the dessert, which was the same on both thalis, she said it was cream of wheat. Definitely NOT gluten free! It was also orange and looked like a squash or sweet potato dish. I had already tasted it without knowing what it was, thinking it was ok because I had ordered what I thought was a gluten free dinner. When I told her that it wasn’t supposed to be on my dish she brought out some rice pudding instead. No apologies were given. Fortunately, my sensitivity to wheat is moderate. A person with true celiac disease could be very sickened by their mistake. The service in general was lackluster. The green beans were almost flavorless and tasted canned. Pappadam was stale, and in general the food did not have the depth of flavor that I’m used to in Indian cuisine. The soups and Dahl were very good.

Some of the worst Indian food in NYC I have had. I had a to-go order tonight and paid $10 for two naans that were smaller than the size of my hand. The chili paneer tasted old and the batter was completely separated from the thin piece of paneer inside. The moong salad should have been sprouted for way long than what we got. The bhindi was so stalk the okra never softened up to eat well. We had to spit out a few pieces of the okra stalks with each bite. I could not recommend one thing from this place and I live two minutes away from here but will go out of my way to eat at a better place than go back to this restaurant. The whole experience cost $70 and regret every dollar.
