I've lived in lower Manhattan over 20 yrs and traveled far & wide to find a high-quality, authentic unpretentious Chinese restaurant close by. (I absolutely loved Red Egg & Funky Broome btw.) This checked all my boxes.
1) The food is absolutely delicious. We had the duck in plum sauce appetizer, the soup dumplings (for my son who didn't care it wasn't a Shanghai restaurant - I didn't try these), the tea smoked chicken, salt & pepper shrimp, famous tofu soup and beef short rib fried rice. The tofu soup is a good counterbalance to the other rich items btw. It's a must for that purpose. The shrimp was head on and so tender yet crunchy.
2) The service is impeccable. Dishes were cleared regularly, fresh plates and napkins provided automatically, water refilled often, and importantly, clean chopsticks provided without asking when my son dropped his. Our server was attentive but not annoyingly so.
3) Decor - I like that this restaurant is nicer & newly renovated. It's upscale, clean and modern. However you wouldn't be out of place in a tshirt and jeans.
If anyone hesitates because of price, think twice. This food is as good if not better than most trendy Manhattan restaurants, but this is not a slow paced, date night restaurant experience. This was the first of many visits and I look forward to it.

The environment is clean and welcoming, the dishes are creative and full of surprises, and every meal feels thoughtfully prepared. The staff are professional and attentive, and you can really feel the passion behind how this place is run.

A must-try place in New York City! This is a 10-year-old local Cantonese restaurant, but they recently relocated here. As always, food is amazing, and service is great.

Service was great, but food was just ok. You can find better food for half the price in Chinatown.

August Gatherings is truly a legendary Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown. My roommate’s auntie mentioned that whenever there’s an important occasion, this is her go-to spot for gatherings.

I placed a >$100 order online. No one picked up until the restaurant was about to close. I didn’t get any refund and had to pick up the food myself. The restaurant said it was none of their business.

the server spilled boiling water on my wife, delayed any help, bland food. Wouldn’t recommend at all. These are the two waiters that were extremely unprofessional.
Manager said they would refund the meal to avoid any personal injury liability (once they do, we will update this review)

Loved this restaurant at their old location. Their new location is more of the same. If you're looking for high end Chinese food, there is no better place in Chinatown.

I was blown away by the duck dish! It was incredibly tasty and cooked to perfection. Although the restaurant is a bit on the pricier side, the quality of the food makes it a worthwhile splurge. This wasn't my first time here, but it was my first visit to their new location, and I'm happy to report that the standards are as high as ever. The egg custard was particularly awesome, rich and creamy with a perfect sweetness. While most of the dishes were excellent, the durian pastry was unfortunately a letdown. Despite that one small disappointment, I would still rate my experience a solid 95 out of 100.

I would say the food is amazing and the service is also pretty good. This is my first time a server will ask if we need help taking a photo wish there’s more restaurant that can do that. I guess it’s due to the rainy day that make the restaurant look empty but everything is great just a bit too pricey🥲. I also got a card that give me $20 off if I spend $100 the next time we come in. The server also told us they are moving to a new location soon but it’s just cross the street😇

Except for the high price, the restaurant that is not recommended, the food is one star, and the food price is 5 stars.
