I’m always down for a great breakfast and this place checked all the boxes for me! I got the World Famous made vegan and let me tell ya, it was 🤘🏻. The pancake was legit huge and delicious, tots fried to crispy perfection, great hot coffee, plant based sausage cooked nice and tofu scramble with flavor. I’ll def be back to try something else!

I love spots like this with a artsy & chill atmosphere. I had the World Famous Breakfast, substituted my pancake for a holiday gingerbread one, and the other people dining with me ordered the Pancake Plate with vegan sausage & French toast. The pancake was really interesting, being made with oat milk & apple sauce as opposed to traditional eggs & milk. I enjoyed the plain pancake more than my gingerbread one but it was still good! The tater tots were cooked to perfection and the bacon was delicious although a little more cooked than I prefer. It’s refreshing to see so many vegan options available. My mother raved about their vegan sausage. Overall it was a nice dining experience, and I’d definitely recommend this spot!

The food was nice, I got the brioche french toast and had them add goat cheese as a topping so I appreciated the ability to do alternatives and thought that was very nice. The bacon was not good quality and just tasted bad and neither myself or my husband ate it and left it on our plates. The French toast was cold in some spots that I'm not sure if that was due to the cold air draft coming from the front door or if the cinnamon butter was what made it cold (the cinnamon butter was good but if it was room temperature it would have been better, it was straight out of the fridge so it chilled the French toast). The service was okay, seems like they just need help with being organized. Two different people told us two different places we could sit and we had to wait for the waitress to come give us our menus. A little more organization would benefit them to only one host giving seating arrangements and also giving out menus when they seat you would probably help the waitress out a bit. Overall a nice experience and a good neighborhood restaurant.

The Backhouse
We try to meet monthly at various spots in Dayton and The Ugly Duckling Cafe was recommended. I love that it is a neighborhood Cafe. I love the aesthetic of the cafe , the artwork and background music created a good vibe. We loved our service from Donovan. He made good recommendations and we witnessed him helping an elderly couple in the door and to their seat. We enjoyed our food selection and plan to return to try other menu items. We wish you all much success!

Came here for breakfast after hearing about it from coworkers. Definitely did not disappoint with the food or the atmosphere. The staff is super friendly not always attentive, but nothing that would deter me from ever coming back. Prices are definitely high because the food is worth it. Very nice portion sizes, absolutely excellent flavor on everything that we had. A lot of the stuff is made in house. Highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried it. Absolutely will be back multiple times! Parking is primarily on the street and behind the building. Seating on the inside is pretty limited, but it's worth getting the food to go if you're not able to sit and enjoy.
Vegetarian options: They are able to substitute most things to vegetarian options. The waffles and pancakes are completely vegetarian.
Dietary restrictions: I'm definitely a place where vegans are welcome.
Kid-friendliness: More adult atmosphere but definitely kid-friendly.
Wheelchair accessibility: Not really wheelchair accessible.

Comfy local diner with great art on the walls. Food is delicious and heavily portioned. Staff is pleasant. Coffee is locally roasted and delicious. The Ugly Duckling is the perfect neighborhood diner.

I took a recommendation to try this place and they talked highly of it. I got the “world famous” breakfast and it was anything but famous! The pancake was under cooked and mushy I the middle. The sausage was under cooked and pink in the middle. The eggs were ordered over hard and the yoke was still runny. The only thing cooked properly was the me tater tots.
I WOULD NOT recommend this place at all.
