Had the Chicken Philly. Added lettuce and tomatoes. Only draw back was THEY HEATED THE LETTUCE AND TOMATOES? With that I have to say sandwich was decent, nothing spectacular and the fries were ok.

We were visiting Toledo for few hours and wanted to eat at a Black-owned restaurant. After a brief Google search, The Hot Box Bistro looked appealing so we decided to go there.Upon entering, the atmosphere was not what we anticipated. The name invokes images of a quaint, classy eatery. What we got leaned more towards "greasy spoon." (That's old school.) It was clean but very basic in decor and upkeep. The service was slow because the woman behind the bar was the only person working the entire room! She did the best she could given the demands of a midday lunch crowd.I ordered the ribeye steak with sautéed vegetables and macaroni and cheese for $22. One of my companions ordered the lamb chops with candied yams and the sautéed veggies for $23. It took quite a while for the food to come, but it was worth the wait. My steak was well-seasoned and cooked to order and the macaroni & cheese was tasty also. I fell in love with the cabbage/broccoli/carrot/peppers/onions veggie combo. It appears to have been sautéed with teriyaki sauce added. DEE-licious!My friend's order came with three center cut lamb chops which were tender and flavorful. Her candied yams never came because they'd just started cooking them. I know this because I saw someone peeling the potatoes as I passed the kitchen. Another side was substituted, but my friend was a little disappointed. A third friend's simple order of chicken wings and fries arrived a considerable amount of time after our orders came out.Reinforcements eventually arrived and helped boost the speed of service. With more attention to details, this establishment has the potential of being a first class place. It looks like that was the goal of its owner(s). But you can't achieve that with open air conditioning vents, wobbly tables, slow service, and last-minute groceries left on the bar, no matter how good the food is.

The food is great! However, my sauce was left off my wings. I came back to pick up my fixed order and was told I had to pay for half of it. With gas being so high and the convenience of my time, the meal should have been free. Good food but hard to support a business operating like this.

The only reason I give it a 3 star is bc it was one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve had in a loooong time. I ordered take out, the fish po boy, it took almost 30 minutes and there was only like 4 people dinning. The servers talked the entire time w/ patrons dining at the bar that seemed more like friends. After taking my order I was none existed to them for the next 30 minutes, no follow up. The worse part is the place was a mess. It was like they just wrapped up a party and didn’t clean yet, there was about 10 dirty cups on the bar in front of me and 6 mimosa flights dirty as well, plates on top of the trash can w/ left over food, champagne bottles on the floor that I really hope were empty. There was so urgency to get my food to me in a timely manner. I was on my lunch break and ended up coming back late, and I work less then a minute away. Sad bc the food was really good. I almost wouldn’t mind the wait if they were a little more customer service minded and clean instead of talking at the bar.

Great restaurant and food! Mimosa flight was good across the board and the highlight of the meal was the seafood gumbo soup. Holy smokes was it good and I would totally go back just for that. The breakfast bowl with beef sausage was spectacular as well with such a good mix of flavors. I was a bit disappointed with the chicken and waffles though. There is supposed to be a spice to it whether mixed with the syrup or at the very least in the breading of the chicken. No spice. The waffle, while nice and airy, was fairly flavorless too. So other than that downside, I fully intend on coming back for more gumbo and to try more of their creole/caribbean aspects of the menu!

Eat like you're at home; away from home at HotBox Bistro. Cajun Soul Fusion Specialists. I ordered two of my favorite cuisines. Steak Philly ?, Fresh Cut Fries ?, & a Pineapple? Chicken ? Rice bowl ?. The food is delicious, huge portions and reasonably priced. Friendly atmosphere and courteous staff. Definitely one of my favorite black owned establishments in Toledo, Oh. Everything on the menu is delicious. You can't go wrong here.??

Food with Love. The service is fast and friendly. The local art gives this the most unique atmosphere. I keep going back for the Red Velvet Waffles.
