It took far too long to get here, but I was finally able to hit McNally’s Tavern in Chestnut Hill for “The Schmitter”. There were quite a few things on this menu that looked good so don’t be surprised to see a follow up on this at some point, but had to talk about this sandwich and experience specifically. So we went on a Friday night around 7pm (had just landed in Philly at the airport) and the place was packed! We were lucky and a couple was leaving shortly after we told the hostess about our party so we sat fairly quickly. Cool vibe in the place, tin mugs hanging from the ceiling and sports on all the tv’s. Like I said though, crazy packed so it was loud and a bit chaotic. The Schmitter is a pretty odd sandwich honestly given what’s on it. Basically a cheesesteak with onions, tomato’s, salami, and their sauce that is similar to a Big Mac sauce. I’d never have thought to add salami to a cheesesteak, but here we are. The flavor was quite good, it was on a round Kaiser (you can order long roll if you want) which reminded me of donkeys place a bit, and the tomato added a nice freshness as well. The price is what you’d expect, maybe a tad bit more, for the sandwich and it comes with basic ridged chips. My girlfriend also got a chicken cheesesteak that was good but looked awful. They use a broiler/salamander to melt the cheese and it came out looking burnt, but it tasted fine. All in all I enjoyed it and will come back again and get another or sample other items. The Schmitter at McNally’s Tavern - Didn’t Suck!

We went to lunch 5 of us and were very happily surprised at all the delicious home made choices and wonderful service. I had the George Bernard Shaw. It was absolutely wonderful. Others had chicken salad bacon burger chicken and were very pleased. It is cozy , comfortable and very charming atmosphere.

I've been going here for 25 years. I have never been so disrespected as tonight. This used to be a wonderful place. I will cross off my list. If you aren't a local, good luck.

Wow, I can't believe how badly I was treated there. If you're looking for a good cuisine scratch this onr off the list

I only ate half of my huge juicy chicken sandwich because I wanted to save room for the absolutely divine coconut cake. Friendliest owner, guests, servers. thoroughly enjoyed it!

This is a small tavern in the middle of Chestnut Hill. Very famous so if you’re planning to eat at six go there at 5:30 it’s gonna take some time to get you a table. But the servers the waiters waitresses they are so sweet. They help you with a big smile and they’re super fast and efficient in their work. We got the Dickens and the burger there. They were both really good. If you love Thanksgiving meal, Dickens is for you. I would just advise to put a little less cranberry sauce. Because Dickens is combination of Thanksgiving meal foods. And my friend liked their burger. She said it was cooked exactly the way she asked them to. their meal sides are either coleslaw or chips so if you’re looking for fries, I don’t think this place has it but their coleslaw was really good.

Service was good, the menu is VERY limited though. They didn't have good options for kids.

Best place for a casual meal in Chestnut Hill or anywhere. Even when it is super busy, like a peak dinner time, the owner will seat you promptly with a big smile. Food is excellent. Their classic George Bernard Shaw with Schmitter sauce on a Kaiser roll will make you want to come back again and again. Thanks for the drink, Anne!!

Classic cozy rustic tavern serving up multi-generational tried and true tavern fare. At least once you must try the 55+ year old roast beef-grilled salami classic sandwich The Schmitter. My favorites include the turkey chili, St Patrick's Day corned beef meal special, and their cakes especially the Coconut Cream cake which is the best on the Hill and perhaps in the whole city. Service is always great.
