I love their ramen and onigiri days! It’s cute inside and the staff is friendly!
Reasonably priced, delicious food. Shoyu ramen, shrimp dumplings and takoyaki. All of them delicious, with the broth for the shoyu ramen being super hearty.
the shoyu Ramen and shrimp shumei were fantastic. I've never had a bad meal or bad experience at yama. let it be known ahead of time if you have not been there before getting a seat and your order may take some time as it's a small place. but it is worth the wait 100% ive visited a few times at lunch alot easier for seating at that time.
Very friendly, good atmosphere and incredible food. Ramen and pork gyoza was out of this world.
Service is what it is as far as being seated and what not. It's a very small establishment with as many tables as they can fit comfortably in that space. Your order it seems will be taken when a seat is available and you seat yourself after that and one of the girls will bring your food out when it's ready. Be prepared to use chop sticks although a food may have been available if I'd asked but wanted to use chop sticks myself.
The food service was fantastic as we're the girls and the chefs.
I had the takoyaki/shrimp shumei/shrimp udon it was filling to me. People with a larger appetite may want to order a bigger dish or possibly more food. I've never been to a Japanese place in Japan but I'm lead to believe the portions are not necessarily American sized 🤣
Overall great experience. Price was good. Food was great. Service was great. Place was busy as youd expect for a place only open a few hrs and only a few days a week. I can definately see why they've been open 31 years.
Will definately be back for more food the next chance I get.
Seriously, I'm surprised that Yama-san is still running a shop.
I was a student at WVU when it opened. More than 30 years ago.
I would definitely like to stop by when I go to Morgantown again someday.
One of my favorite local places. Just a little difficult to work around their hours.

I don't eat a lot of Japanese food, but do rather enjoy it, and this place blew me away. I ordered a veggie udon with a side of veggie gyoza, and my girlfriend had a veggie tempura over rice, and a miso soup. It was honestly some of the best tasting food I can remember eating. We slowly cleaned our plates and bowls, stuffed to the brim, after swapping for a few bites. It was absolutely delicious. Our hostess was so kind, and she and the cooks thanked us from the kitchen as we were leaving. 10/10 customer service. We will go back, and you should check them out!
Vegetarian options: When we ordered "veggie" meals, our hostess asked if we were vegetarian, and if we wanted them to modify the standard spices of our meals to be truly vegetarian. Apparently there is a seasoning that contains fish that is often used. Very thoughtful to ask us, so as to not sneak us some fish!

Entering Yama is like going into a some sort of portal. Are you really in Morgantown? Is it 1998 or 2024? If you are lucky enough to arrive there for lunch, be patient - the place is popular for a reason. Just sit down and enjoy some green tea or a Mountain Dew and await the glorious nourishment that will arrive at some point. This place is not a quick lunch, but why rush when the food is this good and the service is so kind. Slow down and enjoy!
