State Bird Provisions 1529 Fillmore St, San Francisco American • $$$

“This is our fourth time back to State Bird Provisions and to say it never disappoints after so many years, is quite the understatement. They are back to offering their dim sum menu, which is wonderful -- but the standout dish of the night was actually from their a la carte menu -- the garlic chive pancakes with kimchi and honey butter...Oh My God, so good. And, this is after enjoying what has been our go-to, favorite dish here: duck liver mousse with duck fat financiers. Can't recommend enough for inventiveness, savory quality and all around, totally satisfying fare.”

“The best italian food in the city in my opinion! You need to make reservations well in advance but they’ve also been able to accommodate us at the bar when we walk in which is just as nice, so definitely recommend that if you’re a party of one or two. DAMNFiNE pizza 3410 Judah St, San Francisco Pizza • $$

“What a fantastic place. I wanted to try this place for specifically its cupping pepperoni and I was not disappointed. The people behind the bar that night were so friendly, were hustling to get all their drinks made, gave just enough space and attention for us to enjoy our meal and chat while attending to everything else. We got both their pepperoni and the potato pesto pizza to try and loved it. Their crust is perfectly leopard spotted, not too thick, didn't overload the pizza with toppings, and used great ingredients. The pepperoni pizza was loaded with it and had a nice spicy/garlicy undertone. As for the drinks, we got a Shirley temple and a Bunny Hop cocktail which hit the right balance of interesting botanicals. We ended the night with a not too sweet but extremely moist chocolate cake and some of the best pistachio gelato we've tried. Not only was the pistachio on top but also mixed into the dessert. It had all the complexities you'd expect. Their bathroom is clean, their art decor is cute, their music taste is nice, and you can see them making the pizzas right there. Overall, a great experience and we will definitely be coming back.”

“Stopped in on a Wednesday around 4:30pm and had a great time! The drinks are very good, the bartenders were very friendly (I think it’s a woman-owned bar too) and of course, if the cats are there, you get to play with them! One of the bartender told us they currently have 4 cats they rotate. We were there when Tequila, a very fluffy white male munchkin cat was there for one of his first “shifts”. He mostly ignored people unless they walked up to him but he really loved being pet so with some practice and socialization he’ll be a great addition to the team!”

“Amazing meal at Mr. Pollo. Everything was incredibly tasty and the dishes were very balanced. We had perfectly tender asparagus with a punchy anchovy sauce and a delicately boiled egg. The arepa course was bold and flavorful, with some perfectly slow roasted pork. We had Alaskan halibut that was moist and flaky, the preserved lemon glaze added a perfect touch of acid and the snow peas with the carrot rounded out the dish wonderfully. Finally the little custard and tart cherry pastry was a perfect little treat to finish off the meal. A great experience overall!”

Robin 620 Gough St, San Francisco Sushi • $$$$

“Robin presents itself as a contemporary omakase. The place in Hayes Valley has a trendy vibe with modern background music. If you're expecting a traditional Japanese omakase, you might be surprised. It's a Japanese-Californian fusion cuisine. Some fish are from Japan, but many are from Canada, New Zealand, or California. I chose the $160 menu. 20 dishes were served. The person next to me chose the $109 menu, and for $50 more, I got the same menu with 3 additional nigiri. Menu (end-April 2024): 1. hirame (halibut) crudo with pineapple // 2. shima-aji // 3. nijimasu (steelhead trout) with apricot // 4. ume madai // 5. canadian gindara // 6. nori chip wagyu and Santa Barbara uni // 7. sawara (spanish mackerel) // 8. New Zealand king salmon // 9. akami bluefin tuna with a5 wagyu beef sauce // 10. potato chip with caviar // 11. canadian albacore salad with papaya // 12. black sea bream // 13. kinmedai // 14. toro // 15. kanpachi // 16. honzuke (bluefin tuna) // 17. noodle with sesame, shaved truffle and japanese chimichurri // 18. kabocha soup, pumpkin seeds // 19. a5 wagyu with foie gras // 20. coconut ice cream with caramel banana puree and chocolate chips Halibut crudo in a Japanese restaurant is a bit unexpected. The same goes for the Canadian albacore salad. I actually don't see the point of serving albacore in a high-end omakase. In the nigiri, several toppings overpower the taste of the sushi, like the kumquat and apricot toppings. They should use much smaller amounts of topping. The nori with uni was disappointing; the wagyu flavor was completely missing. I also don't see the point of the potato nigiri with caviar. There was a nice selection of nigiri, and many were very good, like the shima-aji, gindara, kinmedai and the wagyu with foie gras nigiri. The Spanish mackerel dish was also very good. The kabocha soup didn't fit with the rest of the meal and the portion was too large. The chef himself said it was to make sure customers are filled by the end of the meal. The final dessert was good, but it was a bit disappointing to have a typically Californian dessert at the end of the meal. The service was very good and it was nice to talk with the sushi chef.”

Outerlands 4001 Judah St, San Francisco New American • $$

“I love Outerlands, it's a beautiful, small and cozy space and at dinner time it is lit just right. We were a large group seated by the window, and the service was truly impeccable. The String Theory & River Crossing cocktails are two of the best drinks I've ever had, anywhere. They make that aperitivo rossa themselves, OMG. Balanced perfection and, oh, just SO GOOD! Outstanding mixology. The starters were great (esp the kohlrabi salad--GET IT!), but a bunch of us had the chicken as our main and it was sadly disappointing. It might seem extreme to give three stars for food based primarily on the chicken alone, but I do feel that chicken is such a foundational/cornerstone dish for a restaurant, the chef should feel compelled to put out the best possible version they can. It was dry, the skin wasn't crisp enough, and it was accompanied by a crouton, chicory, and fennel salad that was very tart and one dimensional, totally missing balance (I think it needed some currants or golden raisins--SOME spec of sweetness to offset the VERY bitter chicories and the lemon vinaigrette). All five of us who ordered the chicken left half the food on our plate--and we're hearty guys who love to eat. Please, take a critical look at this dish. Your customers are loyal and we love you and want you to succeed. BTW, great date night ambiance!”

True Laurel makes the Martinez even more local with foraged redwood tips, together with coconut washed rye and the backbone of the original Martinez recipe (London dry gin, sweet vermouth, Luxardo Maraschino and bitters). Thank you to Alexis and Macario for bringing me to this awesome bar.”

We had an appetizer per the recommendation of our lovely server Christine that was maybe the best thing I’ve ever tasted and then my husband and I both had the Pappardelle entree that definitely lived up to the hype. More than the food though, the ambiance and service really made our experience. When we had a question about what wine to get, they sent the sommelier over for us to discuss with.

“So, when deciding how many stars to rate it’s important to keep everything in context! For example, the atmosphere here is not very welcoming. The seating section is often closed and the energy from security is very “get in, get out. No loitering. Bye!”, but when taken in the context of how central a location this place is and that it’s one of the only remaining 24/7 spots in The City, in that light I think they’re actually doing a pretty good job!Their food IS expensive AF! OMG! But it’s also always satisfying. Every time. Consistency is a virtue. Unlike the food you get from REDACTED or REDACTED. So, I guess, you get what it is that you pay for.Oh yeah AND they accept EBT, too! And in my eyes that’s exceptional and appreciated FR!All things considered, I’m just happy this place still exists at all. Because without it our options are Orphan Andy’s, Denny’s?, Bob’s Donuts, Allstar Donuts, Pizza Zone ‘N Grill (but only until 3 or 4am weekends), 7-11, or Walgreens. What happened to San Francisco’s Night Life?”

“TL;DR: Worth the visit, unique flavor profiles and pairings! Exceptional service. I celebrated my anniversary here and they did not disappoint! As soon as we got seated, there was a note to acknowledge our anniversary and it was a warm welcome! As someone who is indecisive, I enjoyed the structure of the menu, first two dishes were included while you had options to choose from for the next three courses. We had complementary Japanese milk bread to start and it was probably the best bread I've ever had! The cultured butter and warm bread make such a cravable combo! The second dishes were light and refreshing! The cured hiramasa had the perfect touch of spice from the Fresno vinaigrette and the Asian pear cut through ever so slightly making it a delicate pairing with the fish. The beet tartare has good texture with the horseradish foam and crunch from the pine nuts. Second course, the celery root ravioli was different and had a light herbaceous note that made the dish not too heavy like other pasta dishes. We added the supplemental agnolotti and they did not skimp out in the truffles. We're not usually fans of truffle but it was not overpowering and complemented in flavor and texture. Third course, we had all three dishes! Seared black cod and the A5 wagyu melted in your mouth, we didn't even need the knife to cut through. The sauces in both dishes cut through the fattiness and paired well with the decadent taste of both the fish and meat. The Sakura pork had a good chew and smokiness from the breakfast sausage was unexpected but made for a desirable pairing. Fifth and final course, we opted to try both desserts! The profiles of both sweet dishes were different but worth the try. The spiced chocolate had subtle ginger notes while having a good crunch complemented by the meringue. Spring forward definitely gave the feeling of spring with light and airy flavors of nutty coconut and green herb granita! All in all, I'd revisit to try out the revolving menus, the chefs really put time and thought in the courses and left me intrigued for what's coming up next. Service was kind, informative, and attentive. Our waters were always filled, dishes bussed, and table was marked all at appropriate times. Thank you again 7 Adam's team!”

“A gem. SF is so lucky to have a place like this to call its own. Non-caricature chef’s tasting: in every bite you feel the chef’s soul and peer into his vision (if you frequent nyc fine dining or read Pete Wells’ piece on Nōksu, fair or not, you know what I mean.) Seasonal ingredients, personified in the chef’s diverse culinary journey.During the winter months, be sure to round up a crew of 4-6 and pre-order the king crab. The vibe is cali-convivial, in the best sense of laid back but get it done way.Early weekday seating, the restaurant is sparsely seated and it feels like you are a guest in chef’s home, warm and inviting.”

“Overall 6.7/10 Was really excited to try this place and came for dinner a few days ago. I wasn't super enthusiastic about the meal; my husband liked it a lot better than I did. Service was great throughout. We did the high top reservation and they're in a little half nook; interior was nice. We ordered the Shrimp Chips, Stemple Creek Beef with Hong Kong Noodles, and Peking Duck. Shrimp chips were basic ships with some malt vinegar; nothing super exciting but tasty. The noodles I did not like at all; had one small serving and was done with them. I thought they had a weird tomato flavor to them. My husband loved them and finished the dish for us. Peking Duck was interesting. It comes with crepes, cucumbers, cilantro, some green onions, peanut hoisin sauce, and a mousse. Peanut hoisin was good - I was a bit concerned, but it was nice. The crepes were thicker than normal - again a little concerned, but when eating it was perfectly pleasant. The duck itself it almost a bit of a BBQ duck -- it wasn't the typical Peking Duck that you get at Chinese restaurants. If you do want the typical Peking Duck flavor, I wouldn't recommend this. It was good though. The duck itself was really fatty, which I wasn't as big a fan of. Overall, it was an ok Peking Duck -- wasn't my favorite, but definitely a fun option if you want a different style. As noted in other reviews, even though we did reserve a duck with the reservation it does take an hour to come out. The wait staff did try to pace out our dishes so we didn't feel like we had to wait a really long time for it, but just a warning if you order it be prepared to wait.”

“Updates:1. The chocolate chip cookies are actually so good that I have daydreamed about getting them again since I finished my first one. I like them so much I've been planning my week around getting back to Day Moon to get another.2. The baguette is really top notch. After getting it and devouring it for the second time, I've decided that we need to buy them two at a time in our family -- one for the drive/walk home, and one for later.3. Tried the cocoa carrot cake and it was very surprising and good.Original review:Home-runs that I'll be daydreaming about for a while:1. Baguette: It was warm and delicious. We devoured the whole thing on our walk home. The crust had the perfect crisp/crunch and the inside was soft. I think it was whole wheat sourdough.2. Strawberry scone: It was a totally different texture than the scones I'm used to. Instead of being buttery, sweet, and kind of dry, it was gooey and delicious. I think they used fresh strawberries, which helped add moisture. The top was dusted with sugar, but the scone wasn't overly sweet. Great scone!3. Chocolate chip cookie: Incredible. Great texture and flavor. Not too sweet. No notes. Also very delicious: the cheddar spring onion scone.Things I tried but probably wouldn't order again:1. PB cookie: It was better than most. I think almost all PB cookies are too dry though, so I probably wouldn't get this again unless I was craving PB.2. Lemon bar: The flavor was a little bitter and not sweet enough for me.”

“I was led here by the Instagram feed which always knows and shows the best spots in town. It definitely was not wrong! We took a chance and headed there on a Saturday morning, already knowing it would be chaotic. However, we lucked out on an open parking spot a block away so we knew it was meant to be! Although the line was about half a block from the door, it moved quickly thanks to the efficient staff running the small shop. We ordered the plain croissant, chocolate, almond and ham and cheese. The first two were HEAVENLY and shattered into beautiful buttery bits with every bite. What's even more magical is the chocolate that was used inside the croissant. It stayed creamy throughout, without any trace of hard unbaked bits. I'd venture to say it was a luxurious experience having a dessert-level croissant for breakfast :) The others were good but a bit heavy handed in some parts, like the super rich cheese or the very generous almond paste which made them overwhelming. Next time, we'll stick to ordering the basics! And next time can't come soon enough... Eager to see how their new location by the Chase Center will do!”

The Anchovy Bar 1740 O'Farrell St, San Francisco Seafood • $$$

“San Francisco, Fillmore. April 2024. A very casual intimate place from the same group as State Bird Provisions and the Progress. They're right around the corner from State Bird Provisions, on O' Farrell, with an outdoor parklet, cozy small tables and a counter in front of the raw seafood bar. The emphasis is on seafood, and especially something you don't see in ther city - local San Francisco Bay anchovies that are filleted and presented the same day they are caught. I felt the Anchovy Bar Tower For Two is the way to go for an introduction. Most of the time you'll find a seafood tower to be predictable - a few clams and oysters, some whole shrimp, a lobster tail, some sashimi cuts of fish, a couple of marinated dishes - nothing to differentiate it from any other other place. This tower is one of the most interesting presentations of flavors and variety. You get a half dozen freshly shucked raw oysters, then everything else on their raw bar! This includes some fresh wedges of cucumber, oysters shooters, spicy clams on the halfshell, bay shrimp aguachile, a squid conserva the doesn't come from a tin, scallop tartare, smoked trout tabboulet, and a halibut taramasalata made with bottarga, olive oil, and lemon juice. Understated, but the most interesting item are the anchovy pintxos - the same local bay anchovy caught and filleted that day, on a spike with marinated roasted red pepper and Manzanilla olives. You will not miss not having lobster. If you don't feel like seafood then maybe some house mortadella with a sweet and tart agrodolce of balsamic and strawberry + whipped butter over a slab of focaccia. Or, duck schnitzel with capers and citrus and lemon aioli - I watched it being prepared and the smell was so tempting. They have a nice list of wine, a couple of apertifs, and some decent fino sherry. Unfortunately, beer is limited and there are no hard spirits or cocktails. Very nice place only a few minutes walk from Japantown. I only wish they had cocktails and a happy hour.”

Robin

Finally, we appreciated the friendly staff as usual, but our main server did not offer to tell my group about the up charges for white asparagus, lobster main, etc ( I had to interrupt him and have him tell my guests about the up charges for those items...this never happened before and is not acceptable; yes, my guests ordered those items anyway and they could afford it. “Food is great, but a little on the pricier side. Vibe / atmosphere is spot on. Most of the staff are well trained and pleasant but the host/ seating process feels inhospitable and overly optimized for efficiency as they will not seat tables even if the majority is there, ready to order, and knows that the table needs to be turned over for a second sitting, making it a bit dysfunctional for larger groups (things happen, sometimes a person will be late and the show must go on).”

Pretty straight forward diner breakfast fare, huge and satisfying portions, and friendly, efficient service. They make sure your coffee mug is full. We might recommend opting for the latter service, like us, in order to benefit from a calmer atmosphere. The stunning view, added to the delicious food made our evening memorable. We had a great time despite the surrounding hustle and bustle”

“My new favorite Indian restaurant in SF. Once we walked through the front door, we were immediately greeted by smiley employees. The dining area is cozy and intimate. I loved how each table has a vase with a single rose. Romantic touch. The food is sooo delicious! Portions are plentiful, and flavors are immaculate. Papadum (lentil crackers) and 3 dipping sauces is served as a complimentary appetizer. It's quite yummy. But you know that no Indian meal is complete without naan... and WOWOWOW the naan is GINORMOUS here. And butter chicken? Can't go wrong. So friggin good. This place is awesome. The customer service is also top notch. I'll be back again... and again :)”

The Halfway Club 1166 Geneva Ave, San Francisco American • $$

“The Halfway Club is a welcome addition to the Excelsior. While we were bummed when Broken Record closed we are thrilled for the Halfway Club!Came in on a Friday night as a group of 4 for drinks. We were originally planning to get the $13 cocktails but couldn't refuse the $23 pitcher of hazy IPA.... And then took the recommendation of the Mezcal Paloma which was refreshing with great flavor.Service was amazing with great recs, perfect balance of checking in and letting us hang, and sharing offerings. Also, great music at a volume where you can talk but still enjoy. If you live in the Excelsior or are in the area (e.g. soccer games in Crocker Amazon) you need to drop by and support this place. Will be coming to Tuesday trivia and Wednesday movie night ASAP and getting food (which we hear is great!)”

Rasa Rasa Kitchen / R2K 2200 Bryant St, San Francisco Indonesian • $$

“Was there for a lunch date with my friend. It was a cute tiny space , but enough to sit comfortably. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I could feel the traditional vibe when I heard an Indonesian song playing in the background ( which I love ! ). They have an open kitchen & offer various Indonesian menu, like Fried Rice, Satay, Soto, etc. We tried their Pempek, Gudeg, Mee Goreng, & Nasi Padang. They all were so good, close to the authentic ones !!! Service was fast, the owner/chef even greeted us asking for feedback. Price was reasonable too, so we'll definitely come back to this one & only Indonesian restaurant in the bay.”

Pixlcat Coffee 519 Clement St, San Francisco Coffee Shops • $

“A new coffee shop has opened on Clement Street. I have tried their green tea mochi flight and ice dopo panna latte. Initially, I chose the strawberry flavor, but I did not enjoy it. However, I tried the vanilla flavor on my second visit and found it to be quite good. It was not overly sweet and paired well with the ube white chocolate mochi. The combination of sweet and slightly bitter flavors was delightful. I highly recommend this establishment. It will likely become my go-to spot when shopping at the nearby Asian market.”

“I think the square is very good. However, they do not protect their users from scammers, the way I feel they should. People are out here buying products, getting the completed products, and then asking for a refund and Square is giving it without even asking any questions.”
