Beef Tartare

“A gem. SF is so lucky to have a place like this to call its own. Non-caricature chef’s tasting: in every bite you feel the chef’s soul and peer into his vision (if you frequent nyc fine dining or read Pete Wells’ piece on Nōksu, fair or not, you know what I mean.) Seasonal ingredients, personified in the chef’s diverse culinary journey.During the winter months, be sure to round up a crew of 4-6 and pre-order the king crab. The vibe is cali-convivial, in the best sense of laid back but get it done way.Early weekday seating, the restaurant is sparsely seated and it feels like you are a guest in chef’s home, warm and inviting.“

“I think the Marlowe burger's still got it, though today I could've passed on the bacon. Fries are okay, I like that the plate comes with aioli so that I don't have to ask for it in lieu of ketchup. I was disappointed with dessert - I saw some pics of a sticky toffee pudding but they don't make that anymore. It's been replaced with a sticky toffee *bread* pudding. It was good here though, unlike the one from monk's kettle that they really shouldn't serve. It was spacious and there was plenty of seating without a reservation. Came on a Wednesday night. Service was actually kind of amazing. There were like 3-4 staff helping us right when we sat down. We were there for a second dinner and they split the dish for us without us asking other than saying we'd share. I was impressed. It made me think a lot of places really don't try anymore these days.“

“We went earlier this month. Food: It's world-class and absolutely lives up to the 3 stars. Everything from start to finish was superbly creative and delicious. That consistency is what sets Benu apart. Other restaurants can be hit or miss depending on the dish. I've personally noticed a trend of appetizers and dessert being great while the main courses can be lacking. Not the case at Benu. I really enjoyed everything. The kitchen showed off a mastery of flavors. Some were so subtle and delicate, while others packed the right punch at the right time. Service: Throughout the meal, Cindy (I hope I spelled that right) took such great care of us. She was so wonderful, friendly, and down to earth. She made us feel right at home. The food was already phenomenal, and she went above and beyond to make our experience at Benu even better. Cindy is a treasure. Ambiance: Cozy little location. You can see the kitchen walking in off the street. The courtyard in the front is picturesque. The dining room itself is a little simple, in my opinion, but the real show is on the plate, so itno big deal. One small gripe is that I thought the pacing of the meal was...not perfect. I tend to eat slower than my wife, but at a few points, I felt like I needed to hurry up a bit to not keep the next course waiting. Overall, an easy recommendation here. As soon we left, I knew I wanted to come back soon. Benu is 100% worth the price of admission.“
