“Robin really took me by surprise. Having tried many Omakase, I was not expecting this to rank among my favorites. They are producing some remarkably creative gastronomy and sushi here!First, I appreciate that they offered three different pricing options. We chose the middle tier ($150 pp) which gave us a couple more premium cuts, such as Otoro and Uni. This was overall enough to leave us feeling full by the end of the meal.Over the course of two hours we were surprised by creative enhancements on familiar nigiri as well as completely unexpected dishes not typical to traditional omakase. Each course was an opportunity to highlight a different ingredient or flavor profile. I think they have struck an ideal balance between new and old here which is not easy to do.Chef Scott was a great host for us and the service was excellent. They have done a really nice job with the decor and ambience as well. I highly recommend Robin for any sushi lover looking for a breath of fresh air.“

“Friendly staff. The food is great and the portions are good. They give you a lot of stuff when you order a bento box. The sashimi is good quality, nice, thick, and fresh slices. I would recommend this place if you're looking for Japanese food.“

“Happy hour 5-7 mon-thu, 4-7 fri-sun. Delicious food, super easy to over order here, but really good value for money. A few favorites, chef bento, raiders roll, Japanese tacos, Hamachi kama, otoro. The staff are all super friendly and really helpful in suggesting options. No bad selections so far. Excited to go back again!Parking: Dedicated Parking lot behind the restaurant and some on street parking in front.“

“I came here on a reservation as this restaurant is incredibly small. There are only 2 tables that can hold a group of 4 each, maybe 2-3 tables that can seat 2 people, and a couple seats at the chefs counter. I heard the server quote a wait time of 1.5 hours to a group who had come in without a reservation looking for a table of 4, so make sure you make a reservation! After ordering, it takes quite a long time for the chefs to make your sushi, I think we waited around 30 minutes? But that's because everything was cut and made fresh. Make sure you have good company to chat with or else the wait will bore you!For a group of 3, we got 2 nigiri combos, 1 sashimi combo, 1 spicy salmon maki roll, 1 negi hama hosomaki roll.1. Nigiri combo - 8/10. This was a great value for for only $25! You can pick 7 nigiris as well as a chef's choice maki roll. I really enjoyed the Kanpachi, Kurodai, and Ika because they torched the top for some smokey flavor. Our maki roll of the day was the salmon & shiso hosomaki which had a hint of perilla leaf flavor! For the amount paid, it was definitely worth it!2. Spicy salmon maki roll - 9/10. This isn't your standard spicy salmon roll where they mince the salmon with some spice. These are strips of whole salmon so you really get to taste the meaty parts of the salmon. It was my favorite dish of the night!3. Negi hama hosomaki roll - 6/10. We all didn't think much of it. It was pretty bland and I thought that the rice in the roll overpowered the fish. It is a pretty light fish in the first place, so you won't be able to taste it much.Overall a great choice if you want some cheap and beautifully presented sushi! The menu is relatively simple and small“

“Must try Omakase in Castro Valley Tancho restaurant truly exceeded our expectations on our latest visit! From the delightful appetizers to the nigiris main courses down to the decadent desserts, every bite was a testament to quality. The fish, freshly imported from Japan, tasted as if we were seaside. Each dish was crafted to culinary excellence. I thought we're not going to get full but the whole dinner menu was so satisfying! Coupled with the cozy ambiance, it was an experience worth every penny of the $125.“

“This is definitely a whole in the wall kind of sushi place. It's located in a small shopping mall and the other shops are not as fancy. It only has 4 tables and can seat about 20 people. Go early to grab your seats before the lunch crowds. The price is reasonable and the sushi and sashimi are so fresh. Oh boy! I'll definitely come back. Everything was delicious!“

“As soon as I sat down at the table, I received free fries and green beans. Today, I ordered a dinner box that included pork cutlet and Godzilla rolls with my friend. First of all, I was surprised by the amount of food, and the food was so delicious that I ate everything even though I was full. This is my third visit to this restaurant and I think I’ll be a regular customer. I‘m very happy with the service and I was charged just $35. Totally satisfied! Cost-effective restaurant!!“

“Great food, clean and nice place and warm staff. I ordered it for lunch on door dash and I liked it so much that I brought my kids for dine in the next day. The steak, curry noodle soup, shrimp plate, their salad and the peanut butter dressing were amazing. The plates are decent size and heartily.“

“I heard that this place opened recently, which is about 1.5 years now. The place looks alright since that’s how a Japanese restaurant typically looks like especially if it’s small.I was quite surprised how big the serving size is from the Chicken Teriyaki dinner plate (didn’t finish it). No wonder it’s expensive. The food tastes fresh and nice, but I honestly believe that they should lessen the salt of the edamame. Also like the taste of sashimi and California Roll.“

“5 star service, there were just a few things with the food like the beef asparagus appetizer was tough and not very flavorful. The nabe udon said it came with shrimp and chicken, but it only came with chicken. Everything else was pretty good.“

“Gotta love small places like this where the owner is on deck and takes pride in his restaurant. Value to price was awesome. Bunch of Stanford students drive out here probably for this reason. The lunch sashimi bento box was outstanding. Cheers and ty for having “

“Went here to celebrate an early birthday and another occasion and the experience was pretty good. At first glance through the photos, the interior look spacious but it really isn't. The place is located inside a plaza w/ a tons of random shops, restaurants, bakery, and a 99 ranch market. Parking can be difficult (what we noticed when left) but since we had our reservation at 5pm, there was plenty of parking. There's 2 chefs and 2 waitresses, all are really nice and welcoming. We appreciated the booth seating, as it gave us some privacy from the surrounding tables. Interior design was very modern, even down to their utensils. Ambience was nice - sometimes it got too loud but other times, it was dead silent. Maybe it's just the tables surrounding us. NOW for the food. I felt like the first dish that they brought out to us was packed w/ a ton of heavy flavor and too much of it at the same time. There was a lot of things that I wish they would've done differently. For one, and this is just IMO, but I wish they would've started out a warm course or something lighter on the palette. I feel like it's important to ease your guests into your experience, rather than one heavy meal after another... By "heavy" I meant like literally the first dish we had was all unique flavors, including a taste of lavender w/ a shrimp. Another huge disappointment for me was the egg custard. Idk what it was but I did not enjoy this at all. It was dense, cold, and just didn't taste as delicious as it looked. I've had better egg custard for sure, but this was one was just a no-no. I couldn't finish mine so I gave it to my bf, but he didn't like it either. I felt like it was disrespectful to have them pick it up and saw that we didn't finish it but honestly, it wasn't appetizing. I wish they could've asked for suggestions/recommendations on how to improve (FYI: some places do), but there was no way I could've finished that. Everything else was pretty tasty and the experience was good nonetheless. My favorite dish: dessert. Just absolutely delicious. If you're looking to do casual date night or celebrate an occasion without going too far, then I would recommend this place. But if you're looking for a top-notch experience, I don't think this place will fit.“

“Delicious and definitely fulfilled our sushi craving. I highly recommend Pocket Sushi no chopsticks required easy to eat, full of flavor, and so pretty to look at. I stopped by after work to pick up a few different types of pockets, the service was great and the food was fresh and made quickly. I waited no more then ten minutes for them to make my six item order and they brought it out to my car which was also very nice. We will for sure be back for more!“

“Torarenbou Sushi Bistro is in the Valley Center Shopping Center. I had been in this plaza several times, but I had never noticed this sushi spot. Small spot in a small plaza with a shared parking lot, but there was plenty of parking here. Not much service - I ordered ahead on the phone for a to go order, so my food was ready to go when I arrived within 15 minutes. A bit inconvenient because I did not know that they do not take Apple Pay, so thankfully I had my actual card on me. I ordered a sake maki, sake nigiri, and salmon handroll. The portions for the sake maki and sake nigiri were generous, while the salmon handroll was average sizing and I only paid about $20 for all 3. Salmon tasted pretty fresh, but the nigiri had a fatty salmon taste to it and the handroll also had a slight aftertaste to it.“

“A hidden gem in EPA! This place is pumping out awesome food! We came in a group of 7 people and sat down pretty quick. We sat outside in the patio seating and it was very nice a cool breeze came through there and the decor was nice. We looked through the menu and started to make our order. The food was good the vampiro tacos are on point I loved the shrimp ones very good! The sushi rolls they had were also smack! Enjoyed the salmon roll we had. Beer and seafood you can't go wrong with that! This place is a must try spot right next to Pal market on university before you head to the bridge. Thank you to the friendly staff and awesome chefs in back!“

“I had a great meal with my friend here last night! Service was fast and the food was delicious with a lot of unique rolls. I ordered a salmon skin hand roll and the Flaming Dragon roll like last time, which came on a plate with blue fire. Special shoutout to Leo, who was an excellent server that went above and beyond! Will definitely be returning.“

“This is one of those whole in the wall. The food is good! Ingredients are fresh. It’s the fresh ginger that did it for me. I’ve ordered take out, dine in multiple times. Just know that if you dine in, they’ll serve the food in paper plates. Which is fine, I guess. So don’t expect an aesthetic look. Not this place. It’s simply a good place to eat. Period.I like that they have Poke and a good selection of sushi. The spicy edamame isn’t very spicy, but it’s yummy! ?We ordered the dragon roll, the Lion king roll, and fried California roll.“

“Stopped by for lunch at around 12:30 on a Wednesday. There was no wait. Water was provided extremely fast. Ordered the sushi regular: 7 piece Nigiri and 6 piece CA roll, and a miso soup. It was delicious. Some of the Nigiri had toppings including pickled wasabi and avocado. Everything tasted super fresh and each piece was plentiful. -No skimpy skinny fish pieces. Even the CA roll was good. Looking forward to coming back.“

“This place was great and had good food but not enough for five stars tbh. Some of the food items are great and some are okay and need a bit more seasoning. Sometimes it's hard to get the attention of the staff. Some of the items are a bit pricy.“

“we had lunch with 4 people and shared all appetizers and 2 rolls. we ordered a bunch of appetizers which turned out to be all fried. Bad choice on our part. Fried oysters were good. The dish called Monkey Brains which was mushroom encased in stuffing was in an interesting name, but had too much breading on it. The chicken karage was over fried and dry. We ordered gyoza and it turned out they were deep fried and over done. Agadashi tofu was over fried and not tender. The 2 tolls were delicious. Came here for an early lunch. This place is located in a strip mall so free parking. large interior dining area.“

“A hometown staple for me! I moved away recently but whenever I'm back in town each week for work I always order my usual from here - Red Rock Canyon roll and a spicy salmon hand roll. My go-to order for over 10 years now. I've been to many sushi restaurants but nothing compares to my go-to from here. Service is fast and my food is always ready without delay. Prices are affordable, with great portion sizes and menu variety.“
