“I tried the Sweet & Spicy fried chicken, the cheese hot dog and the sweet pancake and everything was SO GOOD! I kept hearing about this place for so long from several of my friends, so I finally decided to give it a go and it did not disappoint at all. The only thing tho, and the reason why I’m not giving it 5 stars is that we did have to wait like over 20 mins for our food :/ I will say, it was a Saturday evening so maybe that’s why ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But despite this, I’m 100% coming back!“

“Holy cow!!! This place is actually so yummy! Definitely gonna be going back, and their Thai tea is delicious and not a total bank breaker, it's $5 for a big cup like they have at other places that try to charge you $8-$10 for the same amount and lower quality. Their bimbop is actually so delicious!!! Great portions, great flavors, and I love how spicy the kimchi is!!! I want to try their corn dogs next ?“

“Only review you need to read..I am Korean, been eating authentic Korean BBQ my entire life in South Korea & across U.S.-- I know Korean BBQ!I have friends in Jax who never ate Korean food & they wonder why I never take them to a Korean restaurant. It's bc Korean restaurants here are awful & they probably would never want to eat Korean food again, not to mention losing my credibility. Korean food is great, but people don't know bc they've never tried authentic. People think HotPot is legit, but it's not & I'll explain later. Today I found a place in Jax where I can proudly introduce my friends to this cuisine.I lived in California. I ate at 5 different Gen locations in L.A. area. After years of waiting for real Korean BBQ to come to Jax, finally my prayer is answered. When I learned it was Gen, I was excited given my past experience w/ this chain.Legit Korean BBQ has built-in tabletop grill where you grill the food to your liking at your own pace. Better places have vacuum suction under the grill or overhead exhaust over each table, so smoke doesn't go everywhere. Gen has vacuum suction--although not perfect, it does decent job. Meal comes w/ complimentary side dishes too. Some places are a la carte while others are all-you-can-eat such as Gen.I went to Gen for lunch. Three options: $20 lunch, $30 dinner, & optional $20 premium add-on. Main difference from lunch & dinner: dinner offers marinated beef short ribs (KoreanBBQ's flagship protein) so it may be worth extra $10. I think you can get dinner option during lunch. But $20 lunch selection is very adequate. $20 premium option includes full-sized Ribeye steak added to lunch/dinner price. The food was on point & that's what matters most at Korean BBQ. Long list of fresh protein options. We ordered marinated bulgogi (thinly sliced rib eye), sirloin steak, pork belly, wine-marinated pork-belly, spicy marinated pork, shrimp, squid, spicy squid, marinated chicken. So many choices I couldn't try everything on menu. We also ordered salads, Korean-style miso soup & white rice. Meal came w/ complimentary side dishes which could be better. One dish was kimchi which was over-fermented (probably due to low turnover). Good fresh kimchi pairs very well with proteins, and this is where they need to improve. As for HotPot--not authentic! After hearing much hype (of course from people who never ate authentic Korean BBQ), I went to HotPot & was disappointed. Besides high prices, tabletop grills lacked slits which defeat the purpose of BBQing. None of the juices/grease drip thru & your food is cooked in a puddle of liquid like you're cooking at home in a skillet. Grilled meats have no charring & no grill flavor. I took a friend there to introduce him to Korean BBQ based on the hype & felt embarrassed. My prediction is word will get out soon about Gen, people will try & they'll never go back to HotPot, especially when Gen costs a lot less. I also predict w/ growing popularity of Gen, other Korean BBQ restaurants will appear in town. There will be surge of this cuisine in Jax!I don't understand how Jax Gen has 3.8 rating on Google (45 reviews total). If you look up Gen in L.A. (where over 1 million Koreans live), the reviews are in 4.2 range. In fact, every Gen in L.A. I visited during dinner time required 30-45 min wait bc so many people were waiting for a table. There are a ton of Korean BBQ places out there so it's very competitive--people are very picky when it comes to this cuisine in L.A. Also, Gen is an all-you-can-eat establishment meaning the a la carte places, which offer higher quality meats (but at much higher prices), get higher 4.6 ratings, so 4.2 is pretty good for L.A. This Jax Gen is just like the L.A. Gen's, & since this is only authentic spot in town it should be higher.“
