All good things come to an end. And that it did.
Unfortunately it is no longer what it once was.
No all you can eat, no king crab legs, almost all the kitchen items are gone, including the lamb with the lemon sauce. Took away the deep fried sushi, the fruit sushi…. Lots of the salads we loved are gone. It’s just like any other sushi restaurant now.
It’s all bento boxes. All the seats are empty…it’s so quiet, they took away lots of the decor inside, the waitress was rude, the whole vibe was just not it anymore. Definitely not the restaurant I remember and loved.
I have eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants and this is the first truely disappointing experience I've had. The BC maki Roll was so dry and lacking flavor we didn't eat more than one bite. The Isobe Maki roll was super salty and reminded myself and my guest of a canned tuna fish sandwich. The Dynamite Maki roll seemed to have loose panko crumb filling the middle, essentially it was filled with beard crumbs. The tempura was honestly the best part of the meal but was nothing special, it just wasn't a disappointment like the Maki rolls.
Best sushi i have ever had!! Highly recommended!! Love this place
Great prices & the variety was more than reasonable
Very delicious, makes you happy eating sushi
Very kind young lady served me, food came fast and was very delicious.
Food was delicious. Ordered the BBQ Eel don and it was the best I’ve had in a while. We also got the prawn tempura and bento box. Portion size is smaller than expected, compared to other restaurants at a similar price point.
Service could be better, but it was still satisfactory. Waited 5min to be seated as no one noticed we were at the front near the “wait to be seated” sign, and took a while before we got to order. There was only one waitress to be fair.
We visited this place today after reserving a window table in advance, but they seated us at a different table in the middle of the room. We asked to be moved to the table we had booked, but when we got there, the floor was extremely sticky, and, as it turned out, the table was too. We had to move again to a cleaner spot. Then, when our order arrived, we discovered that all the fish was raw—something we weren’t warned about. We didn’t complain since the waitress seemed in a bad mood and was a bit rude. In the end, we placed a new order and ended up spending twice as much as planned. Naturally, we didn’t leave a tip. Between the sticky floor and table, the mix-up with our reservation, and the lack of transparency about the food, the experience left a bad taste. I’m certain I won’t be returning to this restaurant.
Great food friendly staff
Good, but not a lot of menu choices for a Japanese restaurant
Restaurantji Recommends
Delicious sushi
Today we were at this restaurant, terrible service, waited a very long time for the waiter and the same amount of time for the order. There were black spots on the salmon. I think that the restaurant should not serve such fish, to which the waiter replied that this is the norm. DO NOT RECOMMEND
I feel like quality has went downhill. I didn’t like the seating setup and felt like I was being watched by everyone in the restaurant while I ate because I was in the direct view of guests and sushi chefs, I like a more secluded eating area like a booth for example instead of a table in the centre of the crowd. We went around 4:45 for dinner and requested a window seat but apparently all those seats were reserved. I’ve been coming here for years and never got a window seat lol.
While the Sashimi was excellent everything else was of poor quality. We ordered the Takoyaki as an appetizer and it was the worst I’ve ever ate anywhere, it was so overcooked that the squid texture reminded me of mashed potatoes, and it was so hot it burnt the roof of my mouth. The sushi rolls were so big I couldn’t fit a whole role in my mouth and disintegrated when picked up by chopsticks. A lot of the sushi was very tasteless, dry and the tuna being very fishy. Their selection is very small in regard to sushi options. Service was ok and the staff members were overall friendly I think.
Side note* : Unsure why Red Deer has no All-You-Can-Eat sushi options either, I guess coming from Ontario we were spoiled to have such great AYCE and excellent sushi restaurants on every corner. I understand Alberta is land locked and the sushi will never be the same but AYCE is an huge plus for me - sushi is very expensive buying it by the roll.
Overall, we will not be returning and will continue driving to Calgary for better options.
Shiso has the vibe of a prosperous restaurant past its prime. The food wasn't really fresh tasting and was very uninspired. The service was fantastic, but that couldn't save the experience considering the poor food quality and outdated upscale atmosphere.
Overall, it gave the impression of an
~ upscale restaurant that is severely past its prime.
Always great. A institute in red deer
