The atmosphere was great unfortunately there was a very strange older hostess who was very authoritarian. I remember the last time I tried to enter and my friends mask đŸ˜· was off a smidge and she screamed at him during 2020 and so we left. The Cafe has been around for a long time and it’s completely overrated.
Ken I’m responding, your place is mediocre and you need to get rid of the witch that treats your customers poorly. You seem to have an attitude as well. I’m make sure and let everyone know.

This was the weirdest experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant. It was our first and last time giving this place a try. We walked in at 11am, read the chalk board that said something snarky about waiting in the lobby, and waited for 10 minutes. There were probably 5 people that looked to be on the clock milling about, including a 12ish year old boy working behind the bar, but nobody said a single thing to acknowledge we were there and that we would be seated soon or even hello. Finally somebody in our group dared to walk into the dining room to see if there were tables open or try to figure out if we were in the wrong spot. The lady working in there physically grabbed our 66 year old friend and turned her around, and pushed her towards the lobby. She then spent several minutes lecturing us about how everybody in the dining room needs her undivided attention and that she cannot be interrupted to speak to people in the lobby. She showed us the chalkboard and condescendingly read it to us.
I wish I would have read the other reviews before inviting guests to try this place because so many of them tell a very similar story to what we experienced. This place should learn about customer service or just close up shop if they’re going to be such ungracious hosts to people trying to give them money.

Stopped by CafĂ© Amsterdam in Anchorage for breakfast and had an awesome experience. I ordered the High Protein Breakfast — 3 strips of crispy bacon, 2 perfectly cooked over-medium eggs, and toast. Simple, but done right. I also grabbed a mocha made with Ghirardelli chocolate — smooth, rich, and definitely hit the spot.

My girlfriend went with the oatmeal and toast, which came with berry compote and butter on the side. The oatmeal was hearty and the berry compote added a nice, fresh touch.

The atmosphere was laid-back and comfortable — great place to start your morning. Definitely recommend if you’re in town and looking for a solid breakfast and good coffee.

First timer and went for breakfast. Reviewed the menu and now knew why the place was lacking customers. 1 coffee(4 bucks) and 1 Ham& cheddar omelette (19.00)đŸ„ș😒
Coffee was basic for 4 dollars.
Omelette was incredibly overpriced...basic 3 eggs it appears, Lil pieces of diced tasteless ham cubes and nothing to write home about cheddar cheese. It came with a small addition of home potatoes and the absolute worst thing they did was to add to the plate was 1 (ONE) whole slice of toast (not 2) just
1 cut in half... What a joke!! Yo, I know inflation is tough but 1 slice of toast added to a 20 dollar Crappy omelette...GTF outta here... Pretty sad you lost a customer by serving one slice of toast.

Below average food, very arrogant and hostile server/host, grotty and greasy restaurant. Maybe the owners should consider calling it a day. Would not recommend.

The Black Forest sandwich at Cafe Amsterdam is a must-try! The perfect combination of savory and sweet, with high-quality ingredients. Every bite is a delight! You won't be disappointed.

Not welcoming. Very strange experience.

I arrived at Cafe Amsterdam this morning, a bit early to meet some friends. Not being familiar with the layout, I entered what looked like the main entrance, which led through a bar area toward the dining room. There was a partition (a doorless opening in the wall), and a sign posted in front—something about being seated—but no staff in sight. I assumed I might’ve entered incorrectly, so I gently stepped around the sign to peek into the dining area to see if my friends had arrived.

I was immediately confronted by a short, stocky woman with gray hair and bright-rimmed glasses—who later identified herself as the owner. She was visibly upset, treated me like I was trying to sneak in or use the restroom without permission, and insisted I wait by the front bench. I calmly explained that I was just there to eat and see if my friends had arrived. The interaction was confusing and uncomfortable, and while she eventually offered me water and let me peek into the dining area, her demeanor remained cold and suspicious.

I told her we would be a party of five and waited. Three friends showed up, and we let her know the fourth was on her way. Despite this, she still wouldn’t seat us. After waiting another 5–10 minutes by the front door, we learned that our friend wasn’t coming—and by that point, my friends were so put off by how I’d been treated, they decided we should leave. I agreed.

The whole interaction felt bizarre and needlessly hostile. I entered politely, said good morning, and just wanted to find my group and sit down. We were never seated. This matched another review I later found, which echoed nearly the same strange tone and behavior from the same woman.

I’m not sure what was going on, but I can say with certainty that I’ve never been treated that way at any other restaurant. I won’t be back.

If you can get into the restaurant and get a seat, the food is actually decent. However, it’s probably the worst service in Anchorage, they have absolutely zero interest in trying to service anybody, we watched three groups walk in for breakfast and the woman behind the counter said “there’s nothing I can do for you”. I don’t know how they stay in business. Rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. The hallmarks of a great business.

Really cute place with great customer service and food! Really enjoyed the chai, and they accommodated my request for non-dairy with both the drink and oatmeal with a lot of kindness. You can tell there's a lot of care going into everything they do. Definitely go here if you need a quiet place to grab lunch!

This is a lovely restaurant. We are repeat customers here.
The place definitely deserves a better rating than what it currently has on Google. Good food, excellent atmosphere, and friendly service. European deco (the selection of beers almost reminds me of Belgium).

Sadly, most negative reviews here are from the mask-up policy during the COVID-19. These mask policies do not apply anymore. So, regardless of your opinion about the pandemic and masks, you should feel comfortable to eat here. The tables have sufficient spacing anyway. It is a cute little brunch place.
