Just sharing an experience that doesn't have anything to do with food. We ate at Camino Real on Sunday night. Today, Tuesday, my wife realized her purse was missing and that she must have left it at the restaurant. We envisioned all the worst, but went to the restaurant this morning to find that her purse WAS there, and intact. Cash, cards, medicare card, driver's license. All there. Just a note to say Thanks! to Camino Real and the staff. It's a little bit of proof that there is still Goodness and Kindness in this weary world.

Tonight we went to Camino Real in Decatur, AL to celebrate my niece’s 21st birthday, and unfortunately it was one of the worst restaurant experiences we’ve had.

It took nearly 10 minutes just to receive our drinks. We ordered two guacamoles and two small cheese dips for our table of seven. When the cheese dip came out, it was cold. We sent it back to be warmed up, which they did. Shortly after, our meals arrived — and several of them were also cold. My parents’ enchiladas (which they were sharing) were cold, my niece’s chicken burrito was cold, and my husband’s taco salad meat was cold as well.

After we had already been sitting there for almost an hour, I went to speak with the manager. Instead of concern or apology, I was met with a very rude response. He said the only option was to remake the entire order. Given how long we had already waited, that wasn’t reasonable. I asked if a discount could be applied since we could simply take the food home and reheat it ourselves. He stated they “don’t do discounts” and could only remake the order. When I expressed that this was unacceptable, I was told, “Well then you can leave.”

Eventually, he agreed to discount the meal. At that point, our waiter completely disappeared. We never received drink refills, and getting another basket of chips (while we had guacamole and cheese dip sitting on the table) seemed impossible. We sat there not eating, directly in front of the register, while the manager had our checks in his hand and never once addressed us.

When I finally asked about the check, he said he would only charge us for the soda, one margarita, and the two cheese dips and guacamoles. I even offered to pay for my son’s nachos since he ate them. The total came to $58.22, which seemed high, but I paid it. I later looked at their menu and saw that large cheese dip and guacamole are listed at $8.99 — yet we were charged $7.49 for each small cheese dip and $8.49 for each small guacamole. That pricing doesn’t make sense.

After giving them a second chance, we will not be returning. This was supposed to be a special birthday dinner, and it was extremely disappointing from start to finish.

They tried to charge for margaritas when we only had tea. Then he acted like we were lying. Food was only okay.
