3.5/5.

I came here to grab a few donuts to take home with me a week or two ago. To be totally transparent, I honestly am not the hugest fan of donuts, so my opinion may not be the most informed.

There's plenty of room to park and I like that they stay open a little later than many other places that offer donuts.

It's more spacious than I thought it would be inside and there are a few tables to sit at. The trash cans looked a little full and one table had some sugar spilled on it but other than that it was clean and warm. Donuts are displayed in a case by the register. There were a LOT of choices and I remember it being mostly unlabeled so I kind of had to guess based on appearance. There was a menu on the wall but one couldn't necessarily 100% reliably match the listed items to their counterparts in the case. Not a huge deal, but would be a positive change imo to add labels next to the actual donuts.

Anyway, I wound up with a chocolate cake donut, a blueberry cake donut, and a chocolate glazed regular/fried donut with peanuts on top. The woman operating the cashier was supremely pleasant and really made my visit - she was just so warm and friendly. She threw in a couple donut holes, either as a kindness or perhaps because they were nearing closing time anyway. Regardless, the were appreciated!

I brought the donuts home to my husband and we ate them for dessert later. He likes fried donuts more so he got about 80% of the fried (I wanted a little bite lol), I ate the blueberry donut, and we split the chocolate cake donut and donut holes. The holes were airy and had a nice vanilla flavor. The traditional fried donut was a little dry and the glaze a little waxy, but the peanuts were a nice addition. The chocolate cake donut was heavy and the sugary exterior was crackly in a way I didn't particularly love, but it was tolerable. The blueberry cake donut was my favorite part, as it was fluffy and not overly sweet.

Again, I tend to be kind of hard on donuts because they're just not my favorite treat, so definitely give them a shot and see for yourself how you feel about them. Kudos for the lovely and kind service.

Really good donuts. Poor attitude by the owner lady. Got snippy when we ordered more dounts. Ripped the the sugar back off our table. I mean we did order 2 large coffees. And a box of donuts. Customer service is everything. Wonder why the parking lot is always empty?

Alright, it's before dawn, the kind of hour when the world feels mostly asleep, save for the hum of refrigeration units and the faint, hopeful glow of early-bird joints. I'm in Decatur, Alabama, and the GPS has pointed me to a place called K May Donuts & Coffee House on 6th Avenue SE. From the street, it’s exactly what it looks like: a hole in the wall. No pretense, no cutesy signage, just a building that’s seen a few sunrises, probably a few too many, judging by the facade.
But this, this is precisely it. These are always the best places to find great food. The joint that isn't trying to impress the venture capitalists, only the hungry bastards who walk through its doors.
I push open the door, and the smell hits you like a warm, sugary, yeasty hug. Not fake, not cloying, but honest, fried dough, sweet coffee, and that undeniable scent of early morning production. The counter is simple, the choices clear. No fancy names, just what it is. I eyeball the trays, looking for the real deal.
I grab a glazed – you start with the baseline, always. And maybe, yeah, an apple fritter, because they look like they mean business. A styrofoam cup of black coffee, strong enough to kick-start a corpse.
I find a corner, standing, because this isn’t a place for lingering, not really. This is about the transaction, the hit, the immediate gratification.
I take a bite of the glazed. And there it is. That perfect, ethereal lightness, the slight resistance of the glaze cracking, the rich, almost custardy chew of the dough within. It’s not just sugar and fat; it’s texture, it’s balance. It’s a goddamn masterclass in simplicity. This isn't some factory-floor doughnut, air-injected and flavor-void. This is someone, probably someone who's been doing this for decades, knowing exactly what they're doing.
Then the apple fritter. Craggy, uneven, looking like it just survived a bar brawl, and absolutely glorious. Crisp edges, soft, sweet interior studded with actual chunks of apple, clinging to just the right amount of glaze. It’s warm, greasy enough to be satisfying, but not enough to feel like a betrayal. This is true comfort. This is sustenance, executed with an unpretentious expertise you only find in places like this.
The coffee is hot, bitter, doing its job. It cuts through the sweetness perfectly. You look around, see the few other early birds, truckers, tradesmen, locals grabbing their morning fuel. No one's taking pictures, no one's performing for social media. They're just eating, living, getting on with the day, fueled by these unpretentious, flawless rounds of fried dough.
This isn't about fancy. It's about fundamental goodness. It's about knowing where to find the real thing, buried beneath layers of corporate polish and marketing spin. K May Donuts? This is the real deal. This is why you get up early. This is why you love food.
