I'm in Decatur, Alabama, and the GPS has pointed me to a place called K May Donuts & Coffee House on 6th Avenue SE. From the street, it’s exactly what it looks like: a hole in the wall. No pretense, no cutesy signage, just a building that’s seen a few sunrises, probably a few too many, judging by the facade.
But this, this is precisely it. These are always the best places to find great food. The joint that isn't trying to impress the venture capitalists, only the hungry bastards who walk through its doors.
I push open the door, and the smell hits you like a warm, sugary, yeasty hug. Not fake, not cloying, but honest, fried dough, sweet coffee, and that undeniable scent of early morning production. The counter is simple, the choices clear. No fancy names, just what it is. I eyeball the trays, looking for the real deal.
I grab a glazed – you start with the baseline, always. And maybe, yeah, an apple fritter, because they look like they mean business. A styrofoam cup of black coffee, strong enough to kick-start a corpse.
I find a corner, standing, because this isn’t a place for lingering, not really. This is about the transaction, the hit, the immediate gratification.
I take a bite of the glazed. And there it is. That perfect, ethereal lightness, the slight resistance of the glaze cracking, the rich, almost custardy chew of the dough within. This isn't about fancy. It's about fundamental goodness. It's about knowing where to find the real thing, buried beneath layers of corporate polish and marketing spin. K May Donuts? This is the real deal. This is why you get up early. This is why you love food.

These donuts are the best around! I haven't had a good donut since moving from Kansas 4 years ago until I found KMays.

Do not be fooled by the outside of the building. These doughnuts were fantastic. Fresh. Tasty. Wonderful doughnuts. Very kind owners and staff. 10/10 would recommend.

BEST donuts in the south!

Got 2 dozen glazed donuts expecting to pay $12.80 per dozen, but was charged $18.99 per dozen. Despite explaining the issue, the owner refused to refund me and was dishonest about the pricing. Be careful when visiting this place.

This is my go to for donuts. No matter what time in the morning you show up, you can tell that the staff is thankful for your business. The donuts are always fresh always good.

Was there on Monday 11/18 with my granddaughter. We ordered two donuts apiece and regretted that we only got 4, they were awesome. Will definitely be back, best donuts I have had in Alabama so far. Price was great also, just over $4 for 4 donuts.

Donuts had a taste of old cooking oil. Coffee cups and lids didn’t match all the while one of the employees sits in the lobby on his phone. Here is an idea while you have nothing to do but sit around on your phone . Make things better for customers!!!

I love this place. I usually only get donuts or pastries but today, today I tried the bacon, egg and cheese croissant . It was the absolute best flaky, buttery croissant I’ve ever eaten ?. And the eggs were real, fried eggs!!(none of that stuff that comes in a liquid in a carton!) I will be back to get this again tomorrow!! #i’mhooked ❤️
