On a recent trip to Simp McGhee's, we were severely disappointed with both the food and the service. The appetizers and entrees took an incredibly long time to arrive and the kitchen was out of several items. I often enjoy a long dinner because it leaves time for good conversation, but 2.5 hours is a bit much. I won't go into detail about the food other than telling you it was just bad, particularly the seafood and shellfish.

I'm afraid nostalgia is the only thing keeping this place open

Just to start out. I'm Chicago born and raised. My great-uncle started a restaurant in Chicago in the early 70s that still exists and has become a sort of icon in the Chicago Pizza world.
I, myself, became a truck driver delivering brand new cars around the country. In my travels I like to experience different foods and experiences. This is definitely one of those experiences that left an impression.

Simp's is a restaurant/bar set in a relatively old tavern in Decatur, AL. I've traveled around the South. I live in North Carolina now, but this is truly the Deep South. The South one reads about in books. The charm, Southern hospitality and all that goes with it.
First, the food was fabulous. I had the Lobster Ravioli and Shrimp which had plenty of both plus beautifully cooked vegetables and sausage. The veggies were cooked perfectly- bright, colorful, crunchy, and delicious.
For dessert, I had their version of Southern Peach Pie and ice cream. A glass of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale to complement my meal. The meal was wonderful. I highly recommend Simp McGhee's.
The experience was the people. I got there on a Saturday when they first opened (5pm Central time). I'm sure the younger crowd showed up later because almost everyone there was 55 and older.
So am I, so I should have fit in. Unfortunately for me, this is the Deep South. Everyone was well dressed as if eating out is a very special occasion. They take pride in their appearance. Me, a nice, clean, t-shirt style shirt, tan cargo shorts and a pair of running shoes. Damn Yankee. Next time, I'll know better.
Anyways, if you're passing through Decatur, Alabama, stop and have a great meal at Simp's! Dress decent.😆

Enjoyed dinner this past Friday evening. Food was delicious, which included the crab claws, pork cop and 2 fresh fish dishes. We are from out-of-town and will make this a go-to stop in the future. Highly recommended!

Nice place. Not what we expected.

Music for Friday evening was nice, but concert

Level loud for such a small quaint place.

Service was slow, in attentive and hard to hear over the music. Dishes served without utensils, on two courses.

Would not recommend if you are looking for a quiet evening with good service. But, a very nice place.

Wanted to try this Restaurant, even called ahead to make a reservation but was told they don't take reservations for parties for less than 6 but since we were arriving around 5 :30 to 5:45 on Saturday evening we should be fine anyway. We walked in and we're seated upstairs. Waitress came took our drink order. Drinks were slow getting there ( that should have been our first clue to run) then she took our orders. Salads finally came and 2 hrs in (I am NOT exaggerating) when are dinners still had not come out at 7:45 my husband ask our Waitress for the check, and told her we were leaving. Now mind you, they close at 9. I asked for the manager whose name is Cameron and he was back tending bar, which appeared to me that is all he wanted to do was fill you up on alcohol and forget about getting the kitchen to move to get any food out. This will be our ONLY time at Simp Mcghee's

This could be an outstanding place to go, but they need work. They offer several dishes with a Cajun theme but it falls was short in flavor. My food was really bland as was my wife's. We were a party of four and each of our meals came to the table cold. We sent them back and they were kind enough to make them over. I still can't get over Cajun food being so lacking in taste.
I might be willing to try it again, but will be sure to tell the chef to add some spice to it.
