This is my first time trying Rodney’s and certainly not the last. The customer service was top notch and the wait time was minimal. I enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly faces. All was well and I even got an extra mac and cheese! Delicious. Will definitely be back soon.

I’m in the Trussville area often and have noticed this place for a while, but today was the first time I finally had the chance to try it.
For context, I’m a certified KCBS BBQ judge and run a small BBQ catering business. That doesn’t make me special, but it does mean I know BBQ. Rodney Scott is well-known in the BBQ world for whole hog, so I’ve been looking forward to trying his food for a long time. Today was the day.
I ordered the 3-meat plate with ribs, pulled pork, and turkey, plus two sides.
Ribs: Excellent smoke flavor and seasoning, but very undercooked—they needed at least another hour on the smoker. I received three bones, managed to eat most of two, and left the third. Big disappointment.
Turkey: Tender but dry, and it tasted like it had been sliced a while earlier and held. Very neutral flavor with no smoke or seasoning coming through. Just okay, but I’d skip it next time.
Pulled pork: Completely underwhelming. Tender, but almost no flavor and none of the smoke I expected, especially after tasting the ribs.
Mac and cheese: Grainy and not enjoyable. There are several reasons mac and cheese can turn grainy, but either way, I’d pass on it next time.
Collard greens: Surprisingly good, but I was shocked they didn’t have pepper juice available—a Southern staple with greens. I’d eat these again, but I’d bring my own pepper juice.
Overall: I left disappointed. I mentioned to the staff—who were very friendly—that the meal wasn’t good, but it was brushed off. With the level of anticipation I had for Rodney Scott’s, this visit didn’t come close to expectations. I don’t see myself returning.

I stopped into the restaurant expecting good BBQ, and I did get that, but the real highlight of the entire visit was a boy named Kariba. The food had rich smoke, tender cuts, and sauces that actually knew what they were doing, yet none of it outshined the energy Kariba brought to the place.
Kariba is the kind of person who turns a normal meal into something memorable. He has an easy confidence, sharp humor, and a way of making everyone around him feel like they are exactly where they are supposed to be. His enthusiasm for the food made each plate feel even better. The ribs tasted richer, the brisket felt smoother, and the sides somehow hit a little harder when he talked about them.
The staff was great and the BBQ deserved the praise it gets, but Kariba is what made the experience special. He is the person you want at the table if you are trying a new spot. He lifts the whole meal. I would come back for the food, though I would come back twice as fast if I knew Kariba would be there too.

Last evening I had the pleasure of being served by Kariba, who elevated my dining experience to a whole other level. As someone that's in my school's culinary program, I understand the foodservice industry quite well, and he should be used as an example for anyone working in it! That young man will be going places in the future!

I had the pulled pork plate with macaroni and cheese and hush puppies. The plate also came with cornbread. The corn bread was surprisingly moist and buttery. The macaroni and cheese wasn't the usual box slop; the cheese was real and it was seasoned with pepper well. The pulled pork has a little fat, but that's to be expected. The barbecue sauce tasted just as I recall at other barbecue joints--and that's a good thing. The cashier was a very kind young man. Please go here.

Food was very good.
I had a half rack of beef ribs with potato salad and baked beans.
The ribs were tasty but not as meaty as other BBQ restaurants.
Potato salad and beans also tasty but too many onions in both.
My wife had a smoked turkey salad and it was excellent.
