I came to Chodang today to pick up a GrubHub order, and the experience was nothing short of frustrating. When I arrived, the order wasn’t ready—which is fine; that happens often. I always drive straight to the restaurant when an order comes in, and sometimes I wait. That’s just part of the job.

However, the way I was treated by the employee at the front was completely uncalled for. Before I could even finish saying I was there for a GrubHub order, she abruptly cut me off to say it wasn’t ready. Fine. But when I tried to confirm the order details, she snapped the name back at me in an irritated tone. I brushed it off—she seemed busy, as she was the only person running the front of a packed restaurant with one cook in the back. I get it.

The order finally came out 10 minutes later—twice as long as the wait time I was initially given. As I picked up the bag, I noticed that they had placed a canned soda inside with the hot food. I casually asked, “You guys put the soda in the same bag as the food?” That’s when things escalated.

The woman at the front completely lost her composure, raising her voice and angrily insisting that I wasn’t supposed to be there before the order was ready. She seemed upset that my arrival time could negatively impact their GrubHub rating—something that’s out of my control since the app sends orders automatically. I wasn’t there to cause problems; I was just doing my job. But for some reason, she was furious that I arrived when I did.

Then, she started threatening to “rate” me and have me fired from GrubHub—just for asking about the drink placement. I wasn’t even arguing, just asking a simple question, yet she reacted as if I had insulted her entire family. Meanwhile, customers were staring, which was beyond embarrassing.

At that moment, I knew I’d never return to this restaurant. It’s one thing to have a bad interaction with an employee, but the overall cleanliness and organization of this place were just as concerning. The restaurant looked dirty and unkempt, the bathroom wasn’t clean, and there were clear health code violations—such as personal groceries and makeup being stored in a drink refrigerator at the front of the restaurant. That’s just unacceptable.

If Chodang wants to avoid issues with delivery drivers, maybe they should invest in their own in-house delivery service instead of relying on third-party apps. But yelling at drivers for simply doing their jobs is not the answer. If this is how they treat a driver, I can only imagine how they treat their customers.

Would I ever eat here? Absolutely not.

I recommend this quaint family business! We ordered the soft tofu soup and it was steamy and homemade tasty. The server (owner?) recommended we have the heat at “Medium” instead of too spicy so that we could feel a bit of spice but it would not be too hot and uncomfortable while we could enjoy the taste of the food itself. She was right! A truly enjoyable meal! When asked for more of one of the five sides, she did not hesitate to refill it and did not charge extra. The dining area was clean and decor was traditional. I thought it was sooo sooo practical how she brought out all of the edibles on a rolling tray. Will need to return to try more of the menu!

I'm not just a foodie, I'm a tofu-die

Oof, I hate updating a review but with new owners comes new flavors and these new flavors ain't it for me.

I came for some mandoo soon dubu and a kimchijeon. Once the place for my favorite soon dubu, but now? Not so much. I'm use to the soup coming to the table boiling violently with a temperature similar to the surface of the sun. Not this time. I could probably have soon dubu every day and not be bored but not if it's from Chodang. While not entirely unsatisfying, I would rather spend my money elsewhere to have a gooey egg and for it to be brought to the table looking like a small witch's cauldron full of simmering egg and soft tofu. As for the kimchijeon, it was decent, albeit a bit greasy.

My family enjoys this place so I'll probably be back but if it's my choice, I'd rather go to some of the other local spots around town for soup. Bonnie is super cool though so tip well!

I'm writing this review a couple of months late. I never write reviews, but I've still been thinking about this food!
I was in Chandler for work and, having recently returned from working in South Korea for several years, was really craving some Korean comfort food. I searched the area and was pleasantly surprised to find all of my favorite soups available for takeout at Chodang Tofu. I ordered the kimchi sundubu jjigae (김치순두부찌개) and the dwenjang jjigae (된장찌개). They were sooooooo good, I nearly cried. They tasted as good as my neighborhood halmeoni made in Korea. And the service was amazing. The kind aunty and halmeoni at Chodang Tofu gave me plenty of banchan, including some of the best kkakdugi (깍두기) and 감자조림 (braised potatoes?) I've had in the US. I hope to be back in Chandler soon so I can get another fill of Korean comfort food. 정말 잘 먹었습니다~ 또 올게요^^

I love this restaurant. I'm from O.C and good food is difficult to find in Chandler comparable to O.C food. I LOVE the banchan, the tofu soup and Bonnie. She is a delight and I'm so happy she just opened another restaurant! I go here at least a few times a month.

Can't believe I lived in the area all these years and didn't know about this place. A little hole in the wall authentic Korean restaurant. I loved the spicy beef tofu soup. Must try in Chandler.
