Bartenders will flirt with married men, leave numbers with them, and give free beer. Great service?!?!

Living here for the next six months I decided to check the food scene. I ordered the fan favorites; green chile chicken mac and the BC rolls. The mac & cheese was creamy, full of flavor, good heat profile and the chicken was tender and not just an afterthought. The rolls reminded me of flauntas more so than an egg roll but the burnt ends have a nice Smokey flavor that work well with the chipotle ranch.

First time visit
Ordered the sampler: chicken, pork and brisket all 3 were on the dry side with little to no smoke or seasoning and luke warm. The coleslaw was cold and crisp but had no flavor whatsoever, the fries were good. Won't be returning

Have eaten there a few times this past week. The brisket and ribs are amazing. So juicy and tasty. We had the wood fired pizza last night and it did not disappoint. Even the stuffed baked potato was just right. Nice folks working there and the new owners have improved some things for sure.

What great brisket! So tender and flavorful. We also ordered a pulled pork and pineapple pizza which was also excellent. It was wood fired and got fired up on one edge, but the combo of pork, pineapple, cheese and a splash of Kansas City style BBQ sauce was delicious!

I picked this place because it was, at the time, rated 4.7 stars. Perhaps customers get a discount if they give good google reviews?

Here are the facts of my experience on 9/3/2024. I've attempted to limit my subjective comments for the readers to make their own judgment about this restaurant, but I wouldn't have taken the time to compose such a thorough review if I didn't feel to ripped off and disappointed.

I drove 34 miles to Springerville to order BBQ. The Gateway was the highest rated restaurant within 100 miles and the majority of comments were rich with that famous sauce.

I arrived at 4:40pm to beat the expected crowd around 6pm.

I ordered 1/3 lb each of pulled pork, chicken, and beef brisket plus a pint of potato salad for takeout.

At the time of order the cook said the brisket would be ready in 30 minutes. I decided the wait would be worth a 4.7 rating.

You pay upfront at the counter in advance of food preparation.

I paid a 25% tip because the girl taking my order was nice. And again, I figured it was worth the 4.7 rating.

I went over to the bar to order a beer while I waited. The bartender said she'd have it served in about 5 minutes because they were having an issue with the drought dispenser. After about 20 minutes of the beer unforthcoming, I left the bar because I expected my BBQ order to be ready in a few minutes and I didn't want the beer adversely affecting my driving on the way back.

It was then 5:15pm and the brisket was still not ready, so I sat in the dining area and waited for my order. The wifi in there was also S. L. O. W.

Around 5:20, the bartender, to my surprise, came over to my table with beer in hand. I told her I appreciated the offer but kindly refused, explaining that I was going to be driving soon.

It was now 5:30 and it was beginning to get dark outside. I have trouble seeing in the dark even with headlights on, and was starting to stress over the challenge of having to maneuver the 34 mile winding mountain route back among dark shadows with my 2 dogs in the back of my Jeep.

I asked the cook behind the counter how the brisket was coming and he was vague and a bit elusive in his response. Not a promising sign, I thought.

At 5:50, I decided to ask for a full refund for the $50 I paid upfront for my meal. The girl behind the counter must have read my mind because just as I stood up, she called out my name saying my order was ready.

Although I had keft a 25% tip, I received no apologies either from her or the cook who lied to me about the timing. (Perhaps the owner told him to honor orders made by favored local customers? That is of course the owner's right, but it's what I'd call cutting in line at the risk of losing a potential customer who gives big tips. A bad business policy in the long run.)

On the drive back to my cabin, I began to wonder that if the service was so poor, what about the food quality? Was properly (safely) prepared in a rush. Would it make me sick?

I was very hungry, so I decided to take a risk, but ate slowly and cautiously making sure everything tasted... well, was edible.

The pulled pork and potato salad were excellent. Rating = 4.5.

The BBQ chicken was somewhat dry, possibly because it cooled down during my drive back, but was quite bland nevertheless. I think it was not smoked like the pork and beef. Maybe boiled and then soaked in sauce after ut was cooked. Rating = 2.5.

The first pieces of brisket were ok but nothing to rave about. The last and largest piece chewed like bubble gum because it was all gristle, and I spat it out on my plate and saved it for my dogs. Rating = 2.0

The BBQ sauce tasted like sweetened ketchup and was as thick as... water

The Pizza is very good! Pulled pork sandwich is also great. The barbecue sauce is not as good as the old Avery’s sauce. The Avery sauce was the best we’ve ever tasted!! Sometimes the bar area gets way too loud! The area not in the bar is small and usually all tables are taken. We recommend to Get there early for dinner!!

The sausage is absolutely delicious and something you should prioritize when ordering. And while I'm not usually a fan of bread pudding, the bread pudding they have here was actually pretty good!

Hands down the best pizza in town, perhaps in the white mountains. Fun place! always has some kind of live music on the weekends. Again Michael and his pizza are the best.

Loved this place on our trip to Springerville.
I'm a bit picky when it comes to BBQ but this place didn't disappoint.
The meat was juicy and the Carolina sauce was excellent.
I'm gluten free, so I opted for meat, potato salad and coleslaw.
Service was very quick.

Decided to take a scenic route from Carlsbad to Flagstaff, and I am glad that we did! Ran into this little gem! Fantastic food, fantastic service, great people and atmosphere! Had some great conversations and fun comparing bbq styles. It is hard to beat Kansas City BBQ - I’m biased, but The Gateway sure puts up a great fight! Great mix of St. Louis and KC style bbq. Would definitely eat here again if we ever are passing through the area!

The meat is so smoky that you can't taste it. It's like they've added too much liquid smoke to it. They gave us a beeper for our order even though there was no one else in the place. It's pricey for what you get. I am unimpressed and won't go back.
