Oh my gosh, just the best takeout sushi on the island. Stunning portion sizes, price, flavour, and options. My only issue with Gaya Sushi Nanaimo is its opening inconsistency. Often, the restaurant will be closed hours before its stated time, or will just be closed for the day. If you make it when it’s open, you’ll be in for a treat. If you plan to get it for a special occasion, be very prepared for the restaurant to just be randomly closed.

Sushi was delicious and fresh and the prices were good - the fish n chips roll is outrageously good and probably one of my favourite sushi rolls ever! Not too much dining space, so if you plan on dining in, I’d recommend doing it during slower hours. Service was quick.

A nice stop on the way into Nanaimo from a Tofino trip. Great ingredients and portion size, friendly staff, reasonable prices. Would recommend the Katsu Don, Spider Roll, Chop Scallop Roll. Would definitely come back if I come around this way.

I’ve enjoyed this sushi spot in the past, but this visit was a bit disappointing. The rice tasted older and not as fresh as I’ve had here previously. Some ingredients, like those in the teriyaki beef roll, also seemed less fresh than expected.
Note to the owner: Please ensure ingredients, especially the rice and proteins, are kept fresh—it’s what sets great sushi apart.
