The sandwiches were tasty, although the owner (or whoever was running the place at the time) was quite rude to her staff while we were waiting for our meals. Made for a bit of an awkward environment in the cafe.
They were able to accommodate a dairy allergy but made it seem like it was a massive inconvenience to them, even though it was just making the sandwich without cheese. Cute location and nice courtyard seating, but the vibes felt off so we likely won't be returning.

We had lunch at this great cafe. It was absolutely delicious. I had cauliflower and blue cheese soup and salad and my husband had an original chicken sandwich and corn chowder. We shared a piece of carrot cake for dessert. The food was top notch as was the service. Highly recommended.

Soup was unreal, anyone complaining about the price needs to leave Nanaimo every once in a while

The service was very friendly and prompt. The food was underwhelming and the portions undervalued for the price. $22 for a small bowl of soup and small sandwich. The menu lacks vegetarian protein options. The veggie sandwich is basically a tomato and cucumber sandwich as I don't eat cheese which was included.
Very unlikely to return

We had the original chicken sandwich and it was amazing. It was our first time and we absolutely will be back! I can’t wait to try the desserts and soup too.

The name says it well. Real food. This is my first time walking into to the Real food Cafe. It is a down to earth, owner operated business. You can tell they are directly invested in the operation and product. The food; Well thought out. Hand crafted. Great flavors. Care was taken in the presentation. The cheesecake, Oh man! The best I've ever had. All the desserts looked equally good Reading other reviews, I would suggest people walk in with the understanding that this isn't Tim Hortans. Your paying for something clearly executed by someone with culinary skills. This takes time and effort. This is real food how it should be. Spend a few more dollars and enjoy.

Was just introduced to this restaurant today and had the best grilled cheese sandwich and broccoli cheese soup. Truly REAL FOOD.

Delightful cafe in the heart of the old quarter. When it says real food, it certainly feels like real ingredients (opposed to processed). Nothing fancy, just simple sandwiches, soups, salads (and cake!).

Very kind, friendly staff! Food was delicious - we will definitely be coming in more often. The soup & dessert selections is was awesome!
We visited Nanaimo from Toronto and really enjoyed our lunch at this cafe. What a gem!
I’ve visited Real Food cafe and had lunch and then a second visit for dessert! All I can say is WOW! Delicious soups, sandwiches and salads but nothing can compare to the cakes made there!!! I had the dulce de leche creme brûlée cheesecake ❤️ it was so light and not overly sweet! My girlfriend had the lime coconut cake which was also outstanding! I will be back to try the rest of the cakes 😜
I keep coming back since my first time and meet all kinds of people that keep coming back not just from Nanaimo 5*
