I love Red's Bakery. Open 24 hours in the heart of Nanaimo's downtown, Red's is a bastion if you keep odd hours (like I do) and want real food, not fast food. I've been going almost daily for around seven, eight months, and the staff have been extremely kind.
The very first I was there Liz took not only my order, but time to ask how I was doing, which made all the difference in what bakery I wanted to go to (there are a number a stone's throw distance.) I've since gotten to know all the staff, who have proven themselves extremely kind and capable, and the reason I keep coming back (to say nothing of my ham and cheese croissant addiction).
I also really like how Red's Bakery is one of the few businesses that helps the local homeless population, which makes me feel really confident at where I'm spending my money.

I was visiting Nanaimo from out of town and Red's Bakery was recommended as the place to go for the best Nanaimo bar in the city. And to be fair—the Nanaimo bar was excellent. Rich, flavourful, and one of the best I’ve ever had.
However, the experience was really let down by the service. When my friends and I arrived, there was a “Be back in 5 minutes” sign on the door, so we waited and took the chance to peek through the window at all the delicious-looking desserts. The woman working came to the door, glared at us, unlocked it, and then walked away without a word. She couldn’t even be bothered to open the door and say hello.
Once inside, the service didn’t improve. She was cold, unfriendly, and barely said more than two words the entire time. We genuinely felt like our presence was a hindrance. To top it off, the payment machine even had the nerve to prompt for a tip, which felt pretty bold considering the lack of hospitality.
Amazing baking, but the service needs serious improvement. If the customer experience matched the product quality, this could easily be a 5-star spot.

Took my boyfriend here to get a Nanaimo bar cheesecake. The cheesecake was incredible, and the atmosphere was so cute and cozy. However there was 3 younger girls working, and the lack of service skills really shows. There was two other people infront of us, as they took an order they would fully turn their back to the rest of us and do the food items. I get it, you’re doing your job but perhaps next time greet people as they come in and tell the next person in like “hello I’ll be with you in a few moments.” Not a single smile or hello was given to any of the customers. Such a shame as this is an old Nanaimo business with great food but the service skills need to be fixed asap.

Service is great and fast, although if you're ordering a lot, do keep in mind it may be busy during rush hours.
Area is a little more suspicious once it gets late night, although generally it is safe.
Be sure to try the Nanaimo bar, and the Nanaimo bar cheesecake, I would say those are top two.

Vibes are cute and quaint - nice addition of a 24 hour bakery in town! They have funny merch on the side too.
The baked goods options vary depending on the day and time, but you’ll always have some Nanaimo/tangent bar available to curb the cravings. Would recommend dropping by during your visit, especially during the night time when options are limited haha
Me and my family have been going to reds bakery ever since i could remember. i’m now 20 and still go to this bakery. but on my own and it never fails to make me happy. after the bar the first thing i say is “can we go to reds i NEED cheesecake and mac and cheese” everyone of my friends agree and that’s the first place we go. anytime i see people who’ve had a few too many. they never hesitate to hand out water and comfort. they have even donated so many things. went through a year of construction and had to do everything to keep them afloat. hell there was a time Red had to come in after being in the hospital when she SHOULD HAVE been bed rested. seeing these reviews are horrible.. we are all human beings. why do you feel the need to make a post on here for everyone to see (for attention by the way). i will forever go here until i may never be able to. but i am disappointed people don’t speak up and fix the issues face to face . but instead they post online and say things they’d never say to your face. grow up people.
