Just returned from eating at the Modern Cafe. My w8fe ordered the brisket and felt like throwing up. It was mostly fat and the meat was grey and slimy! Unfortunately she's too polite to send things back. We complained and was not compensated in any way other than some lame excuse.

First time here for a work related Christmas party and we had the whole place to ourselves so review is based on that ... Service was fantastic, servers were attentive, friendly and engaging Atmosphere is amazing, great layout, great decor and ambience, exposed brick, open ceilings, modern stylish feel just like the name implies Food was ok, I personally didn't find what we had to be anything special, we had a couple of different salad options, potatoes au gratin I think, beef bourginon and salmon, among a couple of other sides. The starter buns were a bit too doughy for my liking, though still relatively soft and reasonably tasty. The salmon was a tad dry, and I was not personally a fan of the beef, maybe just my taste or maybe the way it was made, can't say as it's not something I typically eat/ order when I'm out. Cocktails and drinks were decent all around.
I would be open to come back and try the regular menu

Great food, amazing service and a premium atmosphere. I came in with my friends from Vancouver to visit Nanaimo and found this gem. The staff was great and the manager with curly hair was very attentive to all the guests in the restaurant.

The managers are not veryful helpful about the complaint of the food not cooked fresh or correctly. Some meat and dish items were very chewy and the tomato soup was tasting like butter chicken curry sauce flavour way too much.

Really good food, great atmosphere, great service. Nothing to fault here. The food is delicious.
We had the kids chicken tenders, a bowl of roasted tomato soup, the steak sandwich, and chicken and waffles.
Everything was really good. The mimosa flight is also a must try. The tropical mimosa with roasted coconut on the rim is the best I’ve ever had.

we both took part of the 3 course ribeye on Friday and the food was amazing. the salad was very flavorful and the warm potato salad was epic and steak was cooked to perfection. we went early enough so it was nice and intimate
We had a great time here-- a reunion with friends over lunch at the bay window table. The lovely server helped stow the luggage next to the wall and was helpful with menu choices and even took a group picture. We had tacos and soup with wine as well as dessert and coffee. Overall we loved the whole experience.

Eggs Benedict was awful. The eggs were over cooked and the hollandaise sauce was separated so bad that it looked like oil all over my plate. Not to mention a slice of bread instead of a English muffin. Very disappointed!!!!

Modern Cafe has great Atmosphere but the menu in my opinion is too large. I’ve been here 2 times now and the food has not impressed me. My first meal was a roasted chicken sandwich which had good flavours but the bread was far from toasted. The benny I had today looked good but was flavourless. A smaller menu that can be perfected is better in any restaurant.

Great atmosphere and potential. My order took a very long time and the server admitted there was a mixup. It happens. I ordered the beef brisket. Honestly, the toughest hard to eat I have ever had - and I like brisket. This is not slow cooked or even tenderized in any way. Kale Caesar substitute for fries was very good but very very disappointed in the food.
