it's a shame they did away with the Bento box. This was a very popular item. Lunch much more expensive now to get the same thing ala carte.
Those who know Japanese restaurants in Victoria better than I are great fans of Sen. Japanese owners and some servers so one is reassured that you are getting the real thing. Lots of lunch specials (we opted for sashimi very tasty at $20 for good sized portion). No reservations at lunch and pay parking on Fort Street. Accepts all cards. Service swift and friendly. Nice atmosphere and tasty Japanese food.
We came here because we had read so many good reviews about this place. The staff was really lovely and did an excellent job but the food was an absolute disappointment. Really low quality and incredibly over priced. We had a variety of sushi rolls and they were all strangely super salty, falling apart and otherwise completely tasteless. Tempura was good but then can't really go wrong with something battered and fried...
Whenever I order from Here I order the same roll. Today the sauce was completely different. It is usually a red spicy sauce and today it was a bbq sauce on a spicy tuna karage roll. I ordered as I often do. When I called to ask they said “we recently changed it, we don’t have the right sauce in stock” I don’t understand why this wasn’t told to me when I ordered. All the man said on the phone was that he would pass it on the chef that I didn’t like it. Customer service is very bad, and the food was horrible too!
Went there for solo dinner during a work trip expecting great sushi based on the star reviews. Honestly very disappointing. The sushi was either too spicy to eat or mostly filled with fake fish and tasted very average. I would not recommend.
Theyve gone down hill. Some items were clearly not fresh, probably purchased pre made. Not rolled well,,,muddled flavors, usage of non Asian ingredients, I actually returned an item that they tried to excuse as a new seasoning? Are u serious? Treated me like I don't know what I'm talking about I will never go back. Better choices in town for sushi.
We had good service, tasteless food. Pork gyoza bland, tuna tataki unremarkable, tempura batter good, but had tempura 2 shrimp, 2 pieces of fish, the fish pieces were only pieces of batter tail with no substance of meat, terrible! To top it off we found out there was suspicions of a gas leak on the property for 1/2 hour and no one told us. We noticed they were turning away people.so we left in a hurry worried about our safety
Nice varied menu with lots of good options to choose from. We ordered a mixture of sashimi, udon, rolls and tempura to enjoy.
Sen sushi on Fort in Victoria is the best by far, delicate and well balanced flavor all over the menu our only regret is to find this jewel of flavor too late because sadly moving away from the area, been there 3 days in a row still impressed with the tasty food, great atmosphere and service, my husband and I going back again tonight for our last meal in Victoria. Bravo to a great team to make this place a very special culinary experience. .
Last night we had a large take-out order - great phone service and pick up courtesy. Only took 40 minutes prep time. Food was excellent and presentation was as good as could be for take-out :)

Yep! We've been to quite a few Japanese restaurants in Victoria since we went to Sen Zushi a couple years ago. And now we've returned to this one, as it's the best. The lunch specials are reasonably priced. Nice Miso soup, and my companions said their Teriyaki chicken was some of the best they've ever had. And I tried, as part of their luncheon special, a Aji Fry Gozen which contained 2 deep fried and breaded 'horse mackerals'. Lovely fish. Service was great....and we really enjoyed the fact that there was no background music so we could hear each other speak. Nice atmosphere too.....unpretentious but comfortable. Bento Box with 2 deep-fried and breaded Horse Mackerels
I don't often write reviews but this one feels like an advisory. We have been three times since ownership changed hands a year ago and have been so disappointed each time. Quality, service and price have drastically declined. We won't be back sadly.
Sushi Sen has gone downhill. It used to be my favorite go-to years ago. But it is just horrible now. It is dirty inside. Seems very unhygenic. Made me feel uncomfortable and wondered about the cleanliness and quality of food served. Not too long ago when I was there, the clam soup had still frozen/cold clams. The sunomono noodles were stiff. Recently, I decided to give it another chance, and I was utterly disappointed. Will not return again. I used to tell my friends it was so very good but now, no more. Apologies for a negative review but it is honest and what I experienced :(
Had some amazing sashimi based on chef's recommendations - sea bream, and tuna belly. Both were outstanding. Also had a very addictive chicken appetizer - pepper chicken (dont think it was called that exactly) so much so that when we ate the first plate, we immediately ordered another. Service was good and very reasonably priced for the quality.
We were very dissappointed after the new ownership. But not many restaurants with patio; so, we kept going there although their food is not good and prices went up a lot. Well, last time we were there their credit card machine broke. So, the only server in the entire restaurant brought us another machine and promised that they will never double charge us, but they did. Master Card thought that was a flaud and cancelled our pin number. We spent days to change the pin and it was not very nice. No apologies from the owner for the inconvenience. We found that there is a very good Japanese restaurant in down town Cleaveland Avenue with nice patio. We will never go to Sushi Sen again. No local crowds like before. Just tourists reading the reviews from previous restaurant with same name!
