On Saturday, May 16, we tried having dinner at Oya around 7 PM, but the restaurant door was locked even though I had checked beforehand and saw that they were supposed to close at 9 PM. The place looked pretty full, so we thought maybe they had a private event or had stopped taking customers, but honestly the bare minimum would have been having a staff member at the door explaining the situation or even a note. My father even said we shouldn’t give the restaurant another chance because this is not how you treat customers. Still, we decided to assume it might have just been an isolated incident.
The next day we came back again around 7 PM. This time the restaurant was much less busy, but nobody acknowledged us for about 10 minutes. We signaled to a staff member that we needed a table for three, and he nodded. Eventually, a young Japanese waitress came to speak with us.
She asked if we had a reservation and said the next available seating would only be at 8:30 PM. I replied that it was okay and that we could come back at 8:30, completely understanding that maybe they were not accepting walk-ins at that moment. But the very next second she added, “but our kitchen will already be in last call.”
At that point I was confused and asked if she basically meant there was no point in coming back because we wouldn’t actually be served, and she said yes.
Out of curiosity afterward, I checked their online reservation system and saw they were still accepting reservations until 9 PM. What made the situation even more confusing was that we passed by the restaurant again around 8 PM and there were multiple empty tables visible inside.
It honestly feels like they only care about reservations and simply refuse customers who walk in, even when there is availability. I would recommend people visit other restaurants in Sun Peaks instead, because this is not a proper way to treat customers.
Extremely confusing, disorganized, and unwelcoming experience.

I'm not Japanese so I cannot comment about the authenticity of the food, but everything I had was GREAT! And I would definitely come back.

Even with a reservation, we waited 30 minutes outside in the cold. When we were finally given a table, it was another 25 minutes until anyone would take our order. The food, once it came, was pretty good, but the level of hassle and waiting made it potentially not worth it.

Great food. Amazing fast service but doesn't skimp on quality. Get a reservation because this place seats maybe 20 people toral and fills up really fast.

Nice but expensive for the take away portion…. Basic chicken dish nice but nothing special for $30 for one dish not enough to share

Got a ramen there and it was subpar at best. So disappointing! Honestly, the ramen from Costco tastes better than this $30 waste of money!

Worth it if you can get a reservation or somehow score a walk in. When we tried Monday evening the waiting area was full of people waiting so we checked online and were able to book a 5pm table for Tuesday. Everything we ordered was delicious and the quality of fish was great. We had sockeye sake nigiri, the wasabi Wala roll, oya rocks roll and the salmon oshizushi. The oshizushi I think is all about the spectacle because who doesn't like seeing food lit on fire tableside? Realistically though we enjoyed the raw salmon more. Would recommend and come back for another meal.

food is amazing, service and atmosphere is terrible. we made reservations WEEKS in advance to show up, wait 20 minutes only to be seated at a tiny bar seat with a bar stool without a back. we had a 5:45, showed up at 5:40 to be taken to our seats around 6:05 and told we have a one hour time limit from our 5;45 reservation. did not get water the whole time. they take your order but afterwards do no ask how the food is or anything like that. seats are cramped and have no back support. if you sit near the front of the restaurant people will constantly be bumping into you. there is also always a line/queue of at least 5 people waiting to talk to the hostess. overall very cramped, poor service. if they were in a bigger location it would be much better

Restaurantji Recommends
A relatively small restaurant with a cozy atmosphere where all the dishes are made in the finest Japanese style. The service is attentive and discreet; I must specifically mention Selena, who was particularly brilliant, but also the entire staff who made this evening memorable for our group of friends. Book as soon as you get to town—a must visit.

Always popular. Book in advance or there will only be bar service or take out. Seating for 2 groups and 4 couples plus 8 at the bar. Recommend the Oshizushi.

Horrible customer service! Reservations will not be honoured, even if made six weeks in advance. If another larger party presents themselves at the same time as your reservation, you will not be seated as they take priority. No attempt to make it right or even a sense that they cared. Be cautious if making reservations for a small group.

AMAZING!! The best sushi I’ve ever had incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the tuna oshizushi, it had a basil sauce that was absolutely amazing and so unique. Highly recommend!
