Traveled a fair distance to have food and beer only to find them closed on remembrance day even though they said it would be open. Very disappointed.

You don't end up in Valemount by accident. No one drifts into this remote junction of highway and mountain without intention--or at the very least, without a broken-down rig and a busted GPS. But for the seasoned traveler, the wandering soul chasing snow, solitude, or Sasquatch, there's a warm little watering hole that doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is: The Moose Pub.
Smack in the center of the highway drag, The Moose sits like a beacon of honest drink and no-nonsense food. It's not trying to be hip, or ironic, or rustic-chic. It's just... real. Neon signs humming softly in the windows, and that kind of worn-in barstool that tells you someone has sat here--probably every night--for the last twenty years.
Now, let's talk beer. If you're coming in expecting 16 craft taps and a tasting flight served on a reclaimed cedar plank--go back to Vancouver. The Moose has no taps. That's right. Not a single one. It's a bit of a letdown at first. But then you eye the beer list and it's respectable spread of bottles and cans. Local-ish, domestic, some imports if you're lucky. Cold. Cheap. Efficient. It helps that's it's attached to the towns liquor and beet store. Go figure.
Hungry? Skip the kale! Order the Double Ultimate Burger - a tower of greasy, beefy defiance against veganology. It's not a burger; it's an edible dare. If you're not hungry enough to wrestle that beast, stick to fries and humility. If you are that hungry, just remember: you're walking distance from most accommodations. And after this burger, you'll be crawling and rolling.
The Moose stays open late, and it's the kind of place that doesn't judge. You might run into loggers, sledders, truckers, maybe a lost German backpacker who took a wrong turn in Jasper. The jukebox might be playing Skynyrd, or Drake, or some bizarre YouTube playlist the bartender put on in 2013 and never changed. It's fine. It's all fine.
No, you won't find culinary transcendence here. You won't Instagram the presentation. But you'll sit, and you'll drink, and maybe you'll talk to someone who'll tell you a story that sticks.
Valemount doesn't need frills. Neither does its bar.
Cheers!
We visited the Moose Neighborhood while spending the weekend in Valemount. Overall, it was a good experience, although the place is a little (a lot) outdated.
We ordered tea to warm us up after a chilly hike, and upon getting the bill, we discovered that the tea was $6 each... omg! And on top of that, the selection was wildly limited, and they had no milk or honey to serve with the tea. The waitress did refill our hot water a few times which was nice, but one tea bag only goes so far. Overall, a little disappointing for SIX DOLLAR TEA.
The food was generally good, but I'm rating the food as 3 stars because while the mains were good, the sides left a lot to be desired. We ordered the lasagna and the steak and prawn special. While the lasagna was not a classic style lasagna, it was very good. The 'garlic toast' served with it was just toast, and the Caesar salad didn't have much flavor either. The steak was cooked nicely, and while one would expect 'prawns' served with steak would probably be the type of prawns you see sauteed in butter and garlic, that was not the case - they were more of a tempura style deep fried breaded prawns. Served with tater rings (?) - which were like tater tots, but in a donut shape. Tasty, but not quite what you'd expect for a $32 meal.

Good pub good steak no pints on tap
Our second time dining here when visiting Valemount! The first time we came was on a Saturday night and it was way too noisy and crowded for us but we enjoyed the food enough that we came back again a few years later.
I had the steak and ribs and my partner had the steak and chicken. It was pretty good, though my steak had several big bits of gristle in and I felt it wasn’t seasoned very well, but the doneness was a perfect medium. The mashed potatoes were very tasty (although I could barely taste garlic, definitely need to amp that up if they’re listed as garlic mash!), and the mushrooms were excellent as well. My partner said the chicken was very good and she had less gristle in her steak. The ribs were tender and the bbq sauce was tasty.
Honestly I wish we could half star ratings because I’d like to give 4.5… just shaving off a little bit for the steak. Otherwise the food was good - and I forgot to mention, it was very quiet when we came this time and our server was super friendly and helpful - and we will likely come back again next time we’re in the neighbourhood :)

First of all the service was excellent. The girls were super friendly and quick to help.
The kitchen on the other hand- I’m going to say was a hard fail. On our table we had 6 people only two peoples meal was good- and while we were there 3 other tables sent food back.

Decent small town pub. Service was good, food was good but not many options for gluten-free. Cool old style decor. Not very cheap, but nothing is these days.

I would give zero stars if I could. The waitress named Katelyn was exceptionally rude, arrogant, and snippy. I asked her if the hamburger patties were made with breadcrumbs as I am sensitive to gluten. Her response was that “she did not know as they are not made in-house” and that they ordered them from another vendor. I asked if she could find out and her response was to storm off to the back and then returned to our table with a snippy “They have breadcrumbs” and a condescending look on her face. She made me feel like a major inconvenience for having the audacity to ask questions. Lady, this is your job and if you hate it so much when people ask questions, please just quit….
I ordered the steak and ribs instead, same meal as one of my friends. We both ordered our steaks medium rare, both our steaks were well-done. Under different circumstances I would have returned it but I was hungry after a few long days of hiking and really did not want to deal with her horrible attitude again.
Also, despite the fact that I had clearly stated that I was gluten-free, my order came with a slice of bread as well as bread crumbs in the salad. It doesn’t get much more ignorant than that.
The fries were okay but charging $2 for a side of mayo is laughable…. My other friend ordered sweet potato fries instead of regular fries with her burger and the surcharge was $7 which is ridiculous, a normal surcharge is usually $4.
I have never experienced such horrible attitude and service anywhere else and I have travelled quite a bit.
I thought of emailing the owner instead but after reading the super passive-agressive responses to every single negative review, I didn’t bother.
There aren’t a ton of options to eat in Valemount so they obviously do not need to provide decent customer service, quality food or fair pricing in order to keep their business afloat. Maybe they are nicer to locals who will - along with the flux of Berg Lake hikers - keep this place alive.
If you have any food sensitivities or just care about being treated with respect, don’t come here.

Eesh, this isn't a pub really. It's more so a local ma and PA trucks top. Service level is fine but tables are too close together. Food was good but no beer on tap? Also, no public internet so not a good place for working from the road. The local brewery closed, the town has a center but it's a ghost town after 6. Beer store had sparse stock, you can tell Valemount is struggling, not a town geared on tourists, just drive by traffic. Local campgrounds are awesome!

My wife said the lasagna is better than what she makes at home. So that’s a Michelin Star review 😄
The steak and prawn were fresh, crisp outside and soft inside, not chewy, not smelly.

Absolutely perfect. We stopped in Valemount for the night and ate here. The wait staff were awesome. It was quite busy and they looked after everyone in a timely manner. The food came out fast and hot and plentiful. This hidden gem is one you won't want to miss. I hope we can go back again.
