This place is phenomenal. There aren’t many places that offer tallow fries so I knew I had to try this place. Got 2 Dbl Cheez Burgers and the Nashville sandwich here - incredible and you can tell the difference in premium quality meat and ingredients. The owner and workers were genuinely friendly/caring and don’t have iPads that “ask you a couple of questions.” Easily the best fries in SD. Will return asap - thank you guys!

Amazing people with amazing food. Highly recommend! The only issue I have ever had is forcing myself to decide between the beer cheese fries or the beer battered onion rings! Both of which are delicious!

Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, Burger Kook isn’t your typical burger joint—it’s a delightful culinary outpost operating right out of a house. You place your order in the garage and dine in the driveway, under bright yellow umbrellas that make the space feel cheerful and inviting. It’s quirky in the best way, and it adds to the charm of the experience.
There’s plenty of easy street parking, and you’ll know you’ve arrived when you see those eye-catching yellow umbrellas and the casual tables set up in the driveway. You can scan the QR code posted at the entrance to order via ToastTab, or, if you’re lucky (and patient), the incredibly warm and joyful owner will come greet you herself. Her hospitality is unmatched—she’ll introduce herself, walk you through the menu, and make you feel like you’ve just been invited to the neighborhood’s best-kept secret (but not for long).
Everything on the menu looked fantastic, and the prices were very reasonable. I opted for the Philly cheesesteak, and wow—it was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked, melty, savory, and deeply satisfying. I also tried the fries, which were fried in beef tallow—crispy, rich, and packed with flavor. Easily some of the best fries I’ve had in San Diego. I did manage to snap a photo of them before diving in, but I wish I’d taken more pictures overall.
They’ll offer you some chilies on the side if you ask—what I got were banana peppers, with just a hint of heat, some acidity, and a nice crunch. They paired really well with the cheesesteak, though I couldn’t help but imagine how amazing it would be with some hot cherry peppers too.
I had heard amazing things about Burger Kook, which made it even more surprising that it wasn’t super busy when I went. That said, it only added to the relaxing, backyard-style dining experience. With food this good and service this warm, it’s only a matter of time before this place becomes a local legend.

This is a gem of a spot that I keep coming back to—and for good reason. I love that it’s a family-owned business; there’s something special about supporting local places that clearly put so much care into what they do.
The burgers are absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and made just right. I’ve also tried their fries and onion rings, and both are the perfect crispy sides to go with your meal. If you don’t eat red meat, don’t worry—the chicken options are just as tasty. It’s great to see a menu that offers something for everyone.
I’ve been here three times now, and each visit has been consistently great. I’ll definitely keep coming back!

I really loved the food and shake. We had the Philly and Hawaiian burger. The cheese oozing down the burger was the best. The fries were golden and crisp. I would really recommend burger kook to everyone.

We were at my son’s baseball tournament a couple years back in La Jolla, and Burger Kook was out there serving burgers out in the park…. It was delicious. I’ve been thinking about that burger since. Found them on Instagram and took my daughter to their spot in Bonita today. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger with fries and a soda, my daughter got the mini kook cheeseburger and a cotton candy shake. They even offered free bottled water. Enjoyed the meal right out in the driveway and felt like we were at a house party or something. It was rad. The family is absolutely amazing, full of energy and they seem genuinely happy.and it’s obvious they put their heart and soul into this. Most importantly, the food was on point. As good as I remember a couple years back. We both left stuffed and we will definitely be back. Worth the drive from Santee.
