Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep USA Buddhist Temple Food Court • $
2948 Chino Hills Pkwy, Chino Hills - 4.02 miles

“Today, I took a first trip out to this Thai market at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep USA. The name of this temple comes from its iconic counterpart in Chiang Mai. The preview illustrations makes it seem that the Chino Hills location will pay homage to the architectural spirit of the original Thai temple. The market is held only on Sundays from 9:30 AM to about 3:00 PM (though most shops pack up around 2:30). Admittedly, it was tricky finding the entrance to this place because of all the fencing. When you turn on the Parkway, you'll have to squeeze into a narrowed road due to the temple construction's fencing pushing into the street. However, just keep your eye for a small sign and break in the fencing to signal the entrance into the temple grounds. Be wary it's all dirt and rocky pathways so drive cautiously. They have painted white lines to indicate parking spots. Parking is free and there is a large dirt lot that many vehicles can occupy. Before or after you enjoy the marketplace, it's nice to spend some time exploring the grounds. Enjoy the sights of the golden stupa (bell shaped tower), mini elephant statues, or ornate shrine. Light incense sticks and say a little prayer. Kick back at the outdoor stage area and listen to people singing Thai songs. You might even overhear a Buddhist class going on. The aesthetics and ambient noises instantly teleported me back to Thailand. It was like a warm, nostalgic hug with all the scents wafting from food stalls/burning incense sticks to the cheerful Thai songs being belted out over the mics. Of course, the best part is letting your eyes, nose, and stomach guide you through the line of food stalls. I enjoyed myself fully as I was able to engage in pleasant conversations and inquiries with the very friendly store owners. Dishes range from about $8-13 on average. For drinks, water/sodas cost $1, and specialty drinks (Thai tea, coffee, jasmine green tea, etc.) run about $3. Not only are the prices fair, but you'll get such quality and portions for it! You'll need to exchange cash for tokens to purchase anything in the market. Don't worry, though, you can revert back to cash by turning in the leftover tokens at the end (or donate it to the temple construction efforts). I ordered and enjoyed: Spicy Sausages ($10 for 5 pieces and sticky rice) from Aum Kanom Krok - great flavor with a little heat, aromatics, and tartness. Sticky rice to balance it out. Spicy Crispy Pork Basil ($13 - $1 more for rice) from the stand next to Single Plate. A little sweet, porky and salty, and accented by bold notes from the Thai basil. Pad See Ewe with Chicken ($10) from Single Plate. A solid, standard dish of Pad See Ewe. Smoky and a little sweet (from the soy sauce, sugar, etc.) and savory. I'll be back again, with more friends to check out the other food offerings :)!“
