Honestly, the best sushi restaurant I’ve ever been to. My wife and I have been coming here for 4 years and it never disappoints. Amazing sushi. Awesome service. Great prices. Can’t beat it.

I stopped by Kakurega in Costa Mesa and had the salmon skin salad and miso soup. While both are simple dishes, the salad really stood out — it was beautifully presented with delicate daikon radish sprouts and perfectly cut slivers of crispy salmon skin, each with a small piece of salmon meat attached. You could tell it was made with care and precision.

I also tried two different sake flights, and the experience was a highlight of the evening. Rich, the host, guided me through each selection with such enthusiasm and knowledge — it made the tasting both fun and informative. They also have Denshu in stock, which ended up being my favorite.

The atmosphere is intimate and stylish — perfect for a date night or an evening out with friends. Between the thoughtful food, exceptional service, and relaxed vibe, Kakurega is definitely a hidden gem in Costa Mesa.

Had the Omakase here and let me tell you that it was amazing and has probably ruined all my other sushi experiences ever. Loved the sushi and loved the folks at the restaurant. This place doesn’t disappoint! 5 stars all around.

When we got there, from the outside it looked closed. Blinds were shut, couldn’t see any lights on. I’d say the worst part about the place for us was the atmosphere. It’s very small, the table we were at was sticky, and it just feels a bit cramped and awkward in there. The blinds were completely drawn during the day which felt weird. Why can’t we enjoy the sunset?

The service was friendly, though we had to ask for two sets of menus (a pet peeve of mine… why make us share one menu or even have to ask for enough menus?) We found it odd that they offer Omakase but saw it nowhere on a menu or any info about it and had to ask as well. If you want customers to enjoy your restaurant, don’t make them ask for basic stuff please!

The saving grace was the food. I can’t find much fault with it. The fried calamari was lightly crisp and well coated. And the sushi was mostly excellent. They have toppings with many of the offerings that add so much to the flavor and experience. We did a la carte and we loved pretty much every piece of nigiri. You can’t go wrong. However the cut rolls and hand rolls left some flavor and finesse to be desired.

All in all, I wish the restaurant itself was as enjoyable as the food. Overall, for a casual sushi night out it’s a good option for the food alone. Just don’t expect any frills.

Amazing all around! Great service, beautiful sushi and lowkey yet elevated atmosphere. Seared Red snapper with shishito peppers was our favorite. Compliments to the staff and chefs!

What a hidden gem! I've been here twice now, and both visits have left me genuinely impressed. My most recent trip was on a Friday evening: we were seated immediately at one of the open tables, and our server whisked away our drink orders and returned with them in no time.

To start, we shared garlic edamame and tempura. For mains, I chose the Three Kings Cut Roll and a spicy tuna handroll, while my friend went with the Three Kings Roll II and the Lollipop Roll. We also both enjoyed a comforting bowl of miso soup. Our waiter was gracious and attentive as he patiently answered all our questions and timed each course to perfection. Every bite was delicious: crisp vegetables, fresh fish, and rolls that melted in your mouth. As sushi aficionados, my friend and I agree this ranks among the best sushi we've found in the area.

Although the restaurant was fairly busy, the interior remained quiet, and the dim lighting created a peaceful, inviting ambience. With its exceptional quality and unbeatable prices, this spot has definitely earned its place on my go-to list.

I stopped in for a late dinner on my own, and it was fantastic! I highly recommend the Japanese scallops, yellowtail tuna, and calamari—they were absolutely delicious. As someone who eats sushi frequently and has very high standards, I was thoroughly impressed. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive, making the experience even better. I’ll definitely be back!

This is simply the highest quality sushi in Orange County. The chefs are absolute experts. They use only the absolute highest quality fish, and treat it with world-class skill. I am always extremely satisfied with my meal, it is always outstanding.

Given the quality, I believe it is incredibly underpriced. The value here is extraordinary! The lunch sets are a particularly great value.

Of course the staff is incredibly courteous, professional and friendly.

Anyone I introduce to this place is equally awed. If you haven't tried it yet, you absolutely must, it will become your favorite sushi place.

Quite satisfied, good quality and good price. A bit loud that day and waiters could be a tad bit better trained. The golden eye snapper was definitely the low point but everything else was solid. Had the octopus plater, tuna 3 way (really good), yellow tail belly, white trevally, king roll ii and iii (ii was aight, iii is a must), oysters, and eel hand roll.
