Rubio's in Seal Beach or Rubio's in Downey? I don't know, pick your poison I guess. If you read my review of Rubio's in Seal Beach, I griped how it was a stark contrast to the Rubio's in Lakewood, my go to for fish tacos. At the time of my visit, the exterior and interior looked antiquated as if they hadn't realized that Rubio's had changed its name from Fresh Mexican Grill to Coastal Grill some years ago. At least at this Rubio's in Downey, the exterior boasts the current name, but portrays anachronism with remnants of Fresh Mexican Grill inside. I never thought I'd see the day when walking through the front door would be akin to turning back time, but I digress... This Rubio's is located at Downey Landing on the east side of Lakewood Blvd north of Imperial. It's at the northernmost corner of the shopping plaza nestled in between Starbucks and Philly's Best. In front of Rubio's is a nice fountain, and on the other side of the fountain, you can find Jimmy John's, Jamba Juice, Kaowok, Coldstone, and Ono Hawaiian BBQ. As abundant as parking looks from the outside with a ginormous lot that could fit perhaps half the city, it can be a pain to get around during peak hours, though definitely not as bad as the neighboring Promenade at Downey just down the street. I was craving some fish tacos on a Friday at lunch, and I was also planning to pick something up at the Best Buy on the other side of the lot. Normally, I would have done this in Lakewood considering the Rubio's and Best Buy are about the same distance apart, but they didn't actually have what I wanted in Lakewood, hence why I ended up at Downey instead. I also wanted to see how this Rubio's would compare to my experience at the other locations. I scheduled my pickup time and got there about 8 minutes early, but I only had to wait 3-4 minutes before receiving my order in a large takeout bag. I had requested three different salsas, a cup of cilantro/onion mix, a cup of lime wedges, and a cup of jalapenos/carrots. One of the salsas I requested was the green tomatillo salsa, but instead, all three cups of salsa were red in color. Not much of a disappointment, but what was a real disappointment was seeing the soggier ingredients wrapped in plastic wrap, leaving an unprofessional impression on looks. The moisture sept through the plastic and got on my stack of napkins placed inside the bag. At this rate, they might as well have used plastic wrap for the salsas for completeness sake. Whoever decided to use plastic wrap for the lime wedges and jalapenos/carrots really dropped the ball here. For the fish tacos, I requested one to use a flour tortilla shell and the other to use a corn tortilla shell, something you can request in the app via the customize button. Luckily, they followed through on those instructions. Tastewise, they were fine, but didn't leave much of an impression, even with the use of salsas. I probably should have used lime wedges on those, but I was still thrown off and aghast at the use of plastic wrap. Instead of chips, I requested Mexican Rice and No-Fried Pinto Beans with Cheese. They were fine as well, but nothing to write home about at least standalone. I did enjoy mixing the rice with the cilantro, onions, jalapenos, carrots, and the last of my salsa all sprinkled with lime juice. Service was okay, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, I loathed the sticky floors and just couldn't wait to get out once I was done with my meal. Better than slippery floors on that rainy day at least, but seriously, do a little cleaning why don't you?! I shouldn't have to feel like I'm floundering through the mud with every step I take inside. I'm glad I gave the Downey location a try, but I doubt I'll be back here, especially since I already filled out the Contact Us form that Brad includes in the business response to some reviews. However, I never heard back, even when I requested to be contacted. Same when I filled out the online survey after being

1st time trying Rubio's and I must say that I was disappointed. I tried the battered shrimp tacos. A lot of grease on the shrimp, which upset my stomach and the beans were horrible. The location could also use a good cleaning.

We used to eat here often, but not anymore. Floor is always dirty, it looks as though they don't sweep or mop. And the tables are always dirty and sticky.

IN NEED OF AN OVERALL DEEP CLEAN!!Went to dine in and the first thing I perceived was a moldy wet smell coming out of their AC system ?, the floors, tables, chairs, sign holders pretty much everything was dirty and sticky.Food was OK, service was good, the one thing it killed my dine in experience was the lack of cleanliness of this location. It went to my black list, not coming back!

This Rubios used to be very clean and the food was good, but lately it's really bad. The employees need to clean the floor more often like sweep the chips and the pieces of food on the floor. Also, why don't they heat the tortillas for the tacos? They're always cold. The other day I got some salsa and some of it was very sour and the container got puffy which means it's spoiled. The employees need to check it daily and make sure it's good before they put it out for the public. They need to clean tables and floors and make sure tables are not sticky and make the food better and it will bring in more people.
