pretty atrocious

i like carrillo breakfast, but it's become increasingly disappointing how many non vegan items have been false labeled as vegan. as someone who is vegan not just for moral reasons, but health reasons as well, this simply isn't okay for how much we pay. on top of that, i hardly can find vegan options that are a suffice meal. often times i have toast and whatever veggies they have. for the funding this school has, i really rally behind everyone who have been petitioning (for many years) for more plant based options that are beyond veggies or an incomplete meal. i was also really excited for the rare vegan dessert i saw on the website to be served today only to have used a swipe and see that the dessert was not there and was in fact, not vegan (or vegetarian). carrillo, vegans and vegetarians (for moral, health, or whatever reason) simply pay far too much to be met with these limited and mislabeled foods that can actually cause harm to those who are allergic or very sensitive.

The breakfast is bus, ALWAYS. Lunch, on occasion. But everything else is atrociously mid!! HOWEVER, hands-down, Carrillo is THE BEST dining hall on campus!!!

Got food poisoning multiple times from this dining common in 2019. Beware of the salad bar, they don't seem to replace the dressings often. I was ignored when I tried to warn them of the health & safety issue. I even tried escalating it to UCSB dining and they were incredibly dismissive.

I got beef w the tall white guy who works there- lady who crosses arms at front entrance seems mean I already wanna kms I need her to say hi- older lady is now best friend- they be making up foods at this place- wtf is a chicken lasagna- bakery popped off first quarter and has since been lackin- why do they always pair everything with zucchini- not complaining like zucchini p good but like that's so much green veg- pasta should not be the main dish ever because there is always pasta and that is just too damn much pasta- lunch pops off occasionally- cherry pepsi hits hard- soda machine dilutes- down with the juice machine tho- will to live has been restored- also why do we always see ex hoes here.

I was a Gaucho for a couple of years and the UCSB dining commons are nothing but special to me. Pizza, burgers, pasta, sandwich bar, salad bar, waffle machine, unlimited soda, all-you-can-eat everything all with a simple card swipe! (or <$20 for non-students) Seriously, some of you guys' complaints make no sense. You really expect French Laundry quality here? Yeah right! This place's job is to provide us with glucose for our brains to complete our studies, and for that I'd say it's beyond satisfactory. Ranking of the DCs: 1. Ortega (sushi baby!) 2. DLG (late night cravings) 3. Carrillo (best breakfast) 4. Portola (too far, had it once)

LOVE THE FOOD

Hot take but when you live in Manzi, you see the reality that Carrillo is...well. She has her good days and she certainly had her bad days. I will give them this though, their brunch on the weekends was top tier. During my CHI-5 freshman year my friends and I would commute to Carrillo for Sunday brunch (we were very late risers so it was that serious). Nothing in all of the UCSB dining halls outbeats the egg station. Chefs kiss. Anyway I appreciated their multicultural days once a quarter. Furthermore, their fruit selection was always better than Ortega and DLG. The froyo is either a hit or miss. Once they had red bean and black sesame and me and all the intl girls were here for it, but sometimes they had REDBULL flavor during midterm season...yikes...but all said, Carrillo is pretty standard.

The food is alright. The staff is another story. The ones who act up are sad losers with nothing else to look forward to in life but harass others for no reason. I personally had a bad experience with the staff, I do not think I am the only one who had this issue. I was walking back to the water bottle station at around the end of operating hours (no students in the building). My hands were full with empty paper plates that they make us throw away on the other side of the building and i had just finished eating, so my mask was off. Instantly after getting up and walking to the water station, two workers started yelling at me and cornered me (1-2 feet apart) into the side of the water bottle filling station. Keep in mind no one was around me besides my two other friends, they left their workstations, went across the room to yell at me. They called me demented (while i was filling up my water bottle) said that we were in a pandemic for 18 months and that I didn't care, all the while ironically not enforcing their own rules (i have seen them without their masks multiple times). If they truly cared about the pandemic they would certainly wash the self serve handles after every use, maintain 6 feet social distance and enforce people to use hand sanitizers and wash hands. The reality is that they enjoy going out of their way to yell at students because they have sad depressing lives and have no sense of politeness or moral decency. Who calls a student demented. This isn't an isolated incident, something needs to be done about this issue.
