This is my boyfriend and I's favorite restaurant for birthdays, anniversaries, or date nights because the food has never let us down, the service is amazing, and the beer selection is on point. They have a bit of a seasonal menu which I love because you can always count on a new dish or spin on a favorite when you go.
It's fine dining quality with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We've always had excellent service and even when I order dishes I'm not sure about, I end up loving every single thing on the plate.
I can't explain how every dish is just so perfectly crafted with a multitude of flavors that always seem to work together. They even made me like things I usually don't, like beets.
I highly recommend going with someone you can share dishes with because literally every single item I've ever ordered there, and some others have ordered, have been delicious.

The online menu doesn’t do its justice, because there are additional options at the restaurant in which to choose.
The food was delicious; Chef Zach adds a special touch to his dishes and our server was wonderful!
When entering the restaurant, the atmosphere appeared to be noisy. However, after being seated, I realized that the ambiance was more quiet within our personal space.

Thank you for a wonderful dining experience. We took such delight in the flavors of the appetizer and wished we had not split it. It was so yummy. I had the chicken pot pot, the sauce was great and chicken cooked to perfection. Haley had the beef dish which seemed to melt in her mouth. We shared the carrot cake- our waitress was also named Haley and she was attentive but not interrupting. In all a great meal - we savored every bite, and wonderful service.

We moved up to Grass Valley a few years ago and have been trying to find a fave restaurant, but nope....nothing yet, until NOW! This place is not what you'd expect. The location isn't fancy, but they did their best to jazz it up. We weren't there for the location though, or even fancy ambience....we were there for the food....for the experience of EXCELLENT FOOD, AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE GOT!!! And, to top it off, the service matched the incredible food! If you're a foodie whose sole desire is to eat an EXCELLENT meal, then by all means this is THE PLACE! I am glad it's not right down the street, because I'd be there every week!!! GREAT JOB STERNER FAMILY!!!!

It takes a certain amount of money to keep a restaurant open. The prices being charged accomplish this fairly! To bring me back the food being served must have been eye candy in appearance, pleasing to my pallet in taste, yet allowed room in the stomach for desert. I will be returning!! But why then only 4 stars? One star is missing because the delicious and appropriately priced food was delivered on a 1.5 hour seating timeline. Consequently, I was not provided sufficient time to savor one dish before being forced to start on the next.

I can't say enough good things about 1228. It is by far our favorite restaurant anywhere. Each season we look forward to finding out what new dishes Zach has created. He never disappoints! The sauce, the garnishes, the main ingredients, all play together well, but also offer different taste experiences bite by bite. Every dish he creates is a symphony of flavors that make eating dinner a fun experience!
As a gluten free diner, I appreciate the knowledgeable staff when it comes to knowing what dishes are OK for me to order. Sometimes, the gluten free choices cause me to try something might not ordinarily order, but I am always pleasantly surprised and happy to add to my repertoire!
We have eaten at 1228 many times over the last ten years with both guests and large groups. We are so happy to have a place like this to treat our friends. We love the food, the friendly service, and the live music! We love you, 1228!

This place is outstanding! We were celebrating a milestone birthday and a milestone anniversary. They customized the menu for the celebrations which was a very nice touch and the people celebrating their milestones were very impressed by that personal touch.
Now, onto the food...from the very first bite we all said WOW! We started with the heirloom tomato salad, stone fruit salad, elote smashed fries, pok pok bok bok chicken, and the pistachio soup! I can even begin to describe all of the amazing flavors in each of those dishes. That takes an outstanding chef to make all of that happen.
Highly recommend the bork belly main course along with the short ribs. We can't wait to go back and try the prime rib special. The description sounds amazing.
I literally have not one thing to critique. I highly recommend checking this place out. If I didn't live in southern California I would go there as often has humanly possible...it's that good!
