Truly spectacular views on the back deck of a unique, charming home. We were welcomed and immediately felt the comfort of being in someone's beautiful living room. With so much potential to be a wonderful wine experience, it fell short after the two very scant tastings. We lingered...confused, expecting more wine or to at least revisit one, yet were not offered any more. This tasting really had the recipe to be very special with its surroundings and home atmosphere, yet it left me feeling like I was at someone's beautiful home, but they weren't quite the hostess with the mostess. I so wanted to want to go back with my husband, but for $20 a tasting, I'd rather just purchase one of their bottles and look out at the hillsides of Petaluma

Stubbs Vineyards is high on a mountain top just over the Marin County line from the town of Petaluma. Winds stream in off the Pacific through this region the way they flow into San Francisco most afternoons, laden with a dominant marine layer and the chill off the Pacific. There are really only two wines that thrive in this climate. In fact, by comparison, the famous Napa/Sonoma Carneros Appellation is a good deal warmer. The soil here is rich and imparts the kinds of qualities you would expect to find in finest areas of Burgundy. We were actually looking for something unique, within an hours drive of downtown Sonoma's Plaza and as I combed through listings of small wineries near Petaluma, California I clicked on the Stubbs Vineyard website, which is ironically not in Sonoma County, OR Petalums.Mary Stubbs and her husband purchased the property in the 1980s without a single structure on it. They set about building their home on the property from scratch. The architectural wonder of the structures they created capture perfectly the feel of the land around it.Stubbs is perched, high atop magnificent hills west and south of Petaluma and the few buildings perched high in the hills match the soul of these vast rolling hills. Yet the wines captured us more.Mary Stubbs is the driving force behind this very small winery. Stubbs Vineyard's biggest year was about 2,700 cases. Yet you will find their magnificent, Burgundian style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the finest restaurants in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. For the many who have fallen away from Chardonnay in favor of Sauvignon Blanc, you are in for a pleasant surprise with the more clean, mineral-centric white burgundy style Mary's winemaker has delivered.Even without the wine, a visit to this bucolic space is breathtaking. But, Oh, the wine. But plan ahead.Mary can only offer limited tasting opportunities because she is also does her own sales and marketing and is often in personal touch with the host of restaurants fortunate enough to be able to offer Stubbs Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Do plan early if you want the opportunity to taste her wines and visit this incomparable boutique winery or check the many great restaurants who offer Stubbs Wines in the Bay Area.Mary's passion is broadcast beautifully by the quality of the product she produces. Her grapes are grown sustainably. Power for the vineyards are generated with wind and solar technology. Her grapes are organic. She only uses grapes from her own small vineyard plots and they are perfectly positioned to produce these two grapes in a way our wonderful Sonoma Carneros Region can't match.

The word gem comes to mind when I think of Stubbs. For years I'd biked up Wilson road not ever knowing what was at the end of the beautiful tree-lines driveway. I felt like we stumbled upon Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory because everything was so magical... From the African long horns to the hog to the barn, etc. The wine, too, is incredible. We all left with several bottles. Mary hosts the tasting in her dining room so it's an intimate and cozy experience. I highly recommend checking this place out!

A few friends and I stumbled upon Stubbs Vineyards and it was one of the most delightful experiences I've had in a long time! It's such a gem - the olive trees that lined the drive in, the beautiful home and structures scattered across the property, and the animals grazing on the land (Emus, Llamas, African Longhorns). Mary was a lovely host - she and her family have built a property that is magical. The view combined with great chardonnay and pinot noir - what an absolute treat! I can't wait to go back.

WONDERFUL CHARDONNAY FOR OUR WEDDING!! By far, the finest Chardonnay we have tasted for less than $60! And it was far far less than that. Buttery to just the right degree, with a wonderful finish. We chose the Stubbs Chardonnay to be served with dinner at our wedding, at which a number of guests had excellent taste for fine wines. As a result, prior to the wedding, we invited 6 of our closest friends to a blind tasting of 9 quality Chardonnays from around the world. The winner was overwhelmingly the Stubbs Chardonnay, and the price point was lower than most of the other Chardonnays tasted. As a result, we chose Stubbs Chardonnay for our wedding, and it was extremely, extremely well-received. We first encountered this amazing wine on the menu at Sociale restaurant in San Francisco, and we have been turned on to it ever since. Thank you Mary and family!!

Stubbs is a very cool vineyard that has sublime burgundian pinot noirs and extraordinary chardonnays. They can be hard to find so I started ordering them direct from the vineyard. I have been drinking them for many years now and there is total consistency of terroir from vintage to vintage.

I'm torn, Mary was very intense, but nice. It was kind of a last minute scheduling so she wasn't really ready for us. She did heavy pours and we felt obligated to finish the wine, lucky for us it was delicious pinot! What I didn't like was that while we were speaking she raved about a restaurant so much that I ended up going there for dinner and having literally one of the worst dining experiences ever. So, great wine, bad recommendations.
