It doesn't bother me about the policy change that Starbucks has recently made about. I'm having to make a purchase in order to use sit down and charge or use restroom (well a little), but what does bug me is that it gives the employees an excuse to pick and choose who they want to allow these services too. For free or not, because I don't know what I went there too. Sorry, Jeff. I was told that I had to make a purchase of minimum purchase was $3. Pour of water.
That looks heavy

I’ve been a regular at this Starbucks for some time now. I usually come in on Thursday mornings, a couple of hours before exams, to study and prepare in a quiet, focused environment. I’ve always appreciated the calm vibe and space to get work done, and I’ve never left without purchasing something.

On this particular morning, I arrived around 6:30 AM to prepare for a midterm. I hadn’t ordered anything right away as I was feeling anxious about the test and didn’t have much of an appetite. However, I had every intention of purchasing a drink for myself and another for my professor, once I finished studying. After a couple of hours, I began to pack up and decided to use the restroom before placing my order, as there was a few people waiting in line. I politely asked an employee for the restroom code and was told to ask the cashier. Since there was a line, I stood off to the side and waited.

That’s when a staff member named Scott, who identified himself as the assistant manager, approached me. He stated that the restroom was only for paying customers. I calmly explained that I was about to make a purchase, but needed to use the restroom first. Instead of acknowledging my explanation, he told me to get in line and order something immediately. He also claimed that another employee had previously told me I couldn’t be seated there without buying something, a claim that was completely false. When I asked him to speak with that employee, Scott said they had already left for the day. I suggested checking the security footage to confirm no one had spoken to me prior, but he ignored the suggestion and continued pressing me to buy something, raising his voice and accusing me of being upset, even though I remained calm throughout.

What made this even more upsetting was that I felt I was being pointed out because I am a student. I came in wearing my school uniform, and it felt like I was automatically being judged or assumed to be taking advantage of the space, despite being a paying, loyal customer. I have the app and history to show that I consistently support this location every Thursday, always making purchases.

This experience was humiliating, and I left feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I would sincerely appreciate it if someone from Starbucks corporate or management looked into this matter and reviewed the behavior of the assistant manager, Scott. His false accusations and aggressive tone were completely uncalled for, and I believe an apology is more than appropriate. Customers, especially regular ones, deserve to be treated with respect and honesty, not suspicion and hostility. Customer service should be about making people feel valued and welcomed. Unfortunately, this experience made me feel like the opposite. I hope this issue is taken seriously and that no one else has to go through something similar.

One-Star Review for Starbucks on University Ave, Riverside, CA

Looks like Starbucks has changed their in-store policies to some really stupid ones, and honestly, they don’t make any sense to me. For years, this wasn’t an issue, but suddenly, now it is? I understand that businesses want customers to make a purchase to use the restroom or sit inside, but the way this location enforces that rule is way too aggressive—it’s completely over the top.

The management and employees here act like they personally own the company, forcing people to buy something the moment they step inside. I used to come here, set up my laptop, get some work done, and order a drink maybe 20 minutes or an hour later—but not anymore. Now, the second you walk in, the employees stare you down, watching your every move like security guards. And if you haven’t bought anything within five minutes, they’ll walk up to you with the whole “Hey friend, you need to buy something if you want to stay” speech.

It’s beyond ridiculous. Not every Starbucks is like this—most locations don’t care as long as you eventually make a purchase. But this store? They take it way too seriously and act like they’re policing every single customer. It’s a shame because loyal customers who have spent tons of money here are now being treated like freeloaders the moment they walk in.

Starbucks’ new policy is dumb, but the way this store enforces it is even worse. The attitude of the staff and management needs to change—stop being so aggressive and let customers enjoy their experience without feeling pressured or watched. If this is how they’re going to treat people, I’ll take my business elsewhere.

Horrible service! Ordered a hot chocolate on the drive thru, took over 10 minutes to get my drink and they gave me the wrong drink. So I went inside the store and this guy at the counter (I didn't get his name) said; We'll make it right, go ahead and dump it on the trash can over there( 20 feet away from where I was)" I felt like I was being punished, when they made the mistake, not me. Took more than 20 minutes for me to get my drink.

Was passing through on a road trip and my family ordered 3 drinks from them. I went in to use the restroom after they got their drinks and the man there, I think he was the manager or something, wouldn't let me use the restroom "without making a purchase". I told him my family just ordered a bunch of drinks and he still said "unfortunately you're gonna have to make a purchase". I get it, you can't have a ton of people coming in to use the bathroom especially if it's happening too much. But again my family just ordered a bunch of drinks and he just had an overall bad energy. Never coming back here.
