Located on pedestrian friendly (no cars allowed) Laurel Street in San Carlos, Bistro Mitte offers a selection of German dishes, a full bar that includes a panoply of beers both German and American, and an appealing dessert menu. Portions here are large and suitable for sharing. We began the meal with an order of quite tasty potato pancakes with applesauce on the side. My wife then had a wiener schnitzel, a delicately fried chicken breast served with lemon and a slab of butter and a side of red cabbage, while I chose the spaetzle with vegetables. The schnitzels come with a variety of sauces and a choice of veal or pork in addition to chicken. We were able to share both dishes. Prices are very reasonable, considering the size of the portions. The bill totaled $75 plus tax and tip, and included an ice cold, very fine, 10-ounce German light lager for $10. The servers were attentive, and the decor is Germanic with heavy dark wood. This was our second visit and we'll go again.
Went here for lunch yesterday and were not disappointed. We got a chicken Schnitzel and a pork Schnitzel, one with a side of Bratkartoffeln and the other with red cabbage.
The red rabbagw could have been a little hotter, it was just warm as if heated up. The Schnitzels were delicious!
There's a patio area for seating and also indoor seating.

This was a nice restaurant with a great inside and outside ambiance. Was very quiet when we went but started to get popular as we finished. The staff were extremely attentive, especially with our 3- and 5- year old. Loved their food and will definitely return.
We both have a German background and love good, simple German food. This is the best German food we've had in the Bay area hands down. I had the Brat plate and the sides of Sauerkraut, red cabbage and potatoes were great. The red cabbage was the best I've ever had. My husband got the cucumber salad with schnitzel added it it was quite a generous portion. The pretzel (we are pretzel snobs) was great! We love that they have a variety of mustards to choose from and the beer list is really good. I can't wait to go back. My only request for the restaurant is to add Thuringer sausages from Dittmer's as well.
Excellent food, great service at a reasonable price. If you like German food or trying something new, give this restaurant a try.

This was our first visit. The gentleman who greeted us was also a waiter and the bartender. We only saw that there was one busser to help out. Given that I can't overstate the top grade service. The selection of beers and the wines is very good. We both ordered the Weiner Schnitzel of which they offer several varieties. We thought that we'd order the Schnitzel made with pork loin (less fat) but that was not a great idea. The schnitzel is already rather flat, so the pork was fairly dry. Next time we would order a different schnitzel or something else from the menu. However, we definitely felt that this could be a local "go-to", so we will try again. Very nice ambiance and the outdoor seating looked good, too.
As for the food, my wife and I ordered the ribeye steak dinner. I was disappointed with mine because I had asked for medium rare. My steak came out medium well. I also felt it was over seasoned. I had to dip the steak in the gravy sauce to mask the saltiness. My daughter's had the cheese burger, which was really good. We also had the fried calamari and that was OK. A little under seasoned. The server was good. He checked up on us a few times.
