I'm born and raised in SLO. Gus's is in the top 2 best sandwich shops for me. A true deli with phenomenal specialty sandwiches and options to build your own. I've been coming here since I was a kid when it was a convenient store. They also have a great beer and chip selection.

Mediocre sandwiches and got vegetarian breakfast burritos from them where they added bacon to them anyways. Plus their security alarms would go off early in the morning frequently interrupting sleep.
I'm hoping they go out of business and get replaced by someone who makes sanitary food and is respectful to their neighbors.
Dietary restrictions: They added bacon to vegetarian burritos. At your own risk they don't respect dietary restrictions.

Can someone clue me in on what has happened to this place in recent months? Change in management? Bad management? They just stopped caring at all? A friend of mine got me into this place earlier this year; it was a favorite of hers for decades since she was a student at Cal Poly. The first time we went it was good and the food was good too, but every time we've gone since then, things have just been falling apart at the seams worse and worse with each visit. First, the salad bar went out of service and never came back (was it ever IN service, even?). Then, the fridges broke. I swear it has been a least a month and a half and they are *still* broken. How can you even call yourself a grocery store with no fridges?? That's also when they started running out of ingredients - no tuna salad, no peppers, just like very basic important ingredients for their sandwiches are out. And the attitude at the place is just like, shrug, welp, sorry we're out of that one. OH and literally the chips we got there last time were even stale, it's just so so bizarre. The wheels are falling off quickly and no one is bothering to even try to pick them up. I'm baffled and at this rate I don't know how they can possibly still be in business by the time 2025 rolls around. Anyone have any scoop on what is going on here?

This place has nose dived. Total bummer. Total ghost of what it used to be. Sandwiches were very lacking in taste and size. Something is seriously a miss. Something grave must have occurred. I'm sorry if something has.
Very confused as to why all the shelves were empty and no beer on draft contrary to what the sign says right next to the register. I innocently asked if they were planning a remodel. I was flatly told no with no explanation.

A small well put together sandwich shop. The service is a-bit too casual for a business and I have been twice interrupted by an employee yelling across the room. Not a deal breaker but worth mentioning.
Sandwiches are great, and they will help customize it to your liking quite nicely.
Sitting down outside gives you some good people watching abilities.
All in all a solid choice in the railroad district.

definitely not Disneyland, … just so Drab and Dreary, when you walk in there … just a filthy dirty nasty looking place inside
… the last few weeks, they’re using old used grocery bags from other places, which looks bad on delivery drivers for when the customer sees that they’re going to think some funny Business is going on with their food

This place needs to be cleaned. It’s is always dirty! Definitely not up to standard. It’s bad when you see the employees making the sandwiches scratching their heads, no damn gloves are being worn ( which might be worse if they did wear them because they wouldn’t be swapped out) they continued on to make the food. Disgusting!! We had to call them out on it and get our Sandos remade.
Sick of them being out of items. Never have bacon for my sando, out of ice, this that and the other. This is the 3rd time we have been here and it is ONLY because it is on SLO EATS APP for buy 1 get one free. This is definitely our last time coming here. There are so many questionable health standards about this place. Even the clothing being worn by the staff , dirty and messy like they wipe their hands on their clothes while making food. Wild!

Very cool out of the way place of the hustle and bustle in San Luis Obispo. Old Town Cafe in a nice area. Outside dining. Staff is very friendly. I got to order something off the menu that was not on the menu so I was very happy about that and happy they suggested it thank you the sandwiches were way bigger than I thought they would be! Also a plus. I ordered a gluten-free tuna sandwich. Was very glad they had gluten-free bread. My friend ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and he loved it
Vegetarian options: Avacado, sprouts, lettuce, tomatoe.
Dietary restrictions: Gluten free bread.

I'm so disappointed I hate leaving a non-positive review I've only had to do it one other time and it felt really bad. My daughter and I are locals been coming to Gus's for many years however it has been some time since we have been here so we thought we would come over and show them some love unfortunately the love was not reciprocated. The young man that took our order seem to be very nice. However my daughter went to the soda machines and they were out of Dr Pepper in both of the machines. When my daughter pointed it out the response from the young lady that worked there was well they're not all out. They were out of sourdough rolls my sliced wheat bread was very dry and crumbly. There were four people working and we were the only people in the store and my daughter tried to pay for some sodas and she waited and waited and waited and nobody came and then when she tried to get their attention again their snarky response was we're busy making sandwiches. Eventually they finally found the time to come over and take my daughter's money and then just before we left we actually overheard them in the kitchen talking s*** about us I can't believe it we're really nice people we don't cause problems I don't even like to leave a bad review I'm so bummed that I have to do this I noticed that there are many other not-so-good reviews Im bummed out. I hope the woman that was there today was not the owner or the manager because that was terrible customer service zero friendliness bad attitude . Remember you set the bar . All of these things can be fixed it could be a great place again. Clean up your store clean up your attitudes and keep fresh food stocked in your store I have been a business owner in San Luis Obispo for for 23 years I have retired I'm 75 years old. Good luck

Not what it used to be. Seems no employees or the owner care about the place anymore. Filthy and out of stock. What beer is in stock is years old. Couldn't eat the sandwich. Went from best sandwich in slo to absolutely the worst.

The worst sandwich in slo?
I’ll admit Gus’s has never been my favorite sandwich but this visit was just depressing. No straws, out of lots of bread, empty cold cases and shelves. Even if I overlook all of that it was the saddest sandwich I have ever had. Subway makes a better looking sub. The whole place just seems so dirty and not kept up. Even my toddler was going around pointing out everything “old and broken” it’s pretty bad when a kid is noticing how run down it is. I should have grabbed a photo of the food prep area. After a few bites I honestly didn’t feel comfortable with any of us consuming the food and we tossed the remainder. We will be sticking with shops that slice their meat in house, clean and just take better care in general.
