Unfortunately this isn’t going to be a great review, but it’ll be honest..after hearing a huge ad campaign on the radio about how great this spot is, I decided to pop in with my kid to get some dinner. I’m just going to get to it. The food was lackluster. Not a lot of flavor at all. Ordered a baked roll, which would be hot as they have been in other sushi restaurants. It was not even lukewarm when it came out. I didn’t even finish it. They upselled it and tossed some shrimp “bits” or something like that on it, and some jalapeño that were supposed to be tempura..I guess. The nigiri was fine. Guess you can’t mess up raw fish unless it’s just not fresh, then that’s a whole other issue you’re dealing with. The appetizer we got was calamari…unimpressive..upsold us to make it spicy? It wasn’t. A toddler could’ve eaten it as it was about as bland as cardboard. Waiter or maybe the manager I’m guessing came over to ask how things were..I explained we were not thrilled and discussed what was wrong only to get a “wow…yeah it was kind of crazy and we’re busy, sorry” (they opened at 4:00, and it was not long after we walked in and sat down to wait for over an hour before the app came out) no offer to discount or take off the food items which all were pretty bad minus the nigiri…nothing. Spent 82$ for my son and I to eat and it was atrocious to be honest. Service was extremely dull. There’s FAR better spots in Turlock that serve sushi. This place blows. Won’t ever go back. If I was the owner, I’d be embarrassed at the foods flavor, presentation, lack of interesting menu / rolls, and very sub par service ..not for what I spent to eat there. Very sub par.

The place sucks. Sorry. Nothing personal.

Food was at best average, Luke warm over cooked. Disappointing food experience. Not the Katana I remember. Too bad

My brother had the Open Table menu and was blown away by the quality and taste (and he lives in New York, so he's hard to impress!); I had the chicken-stuffed shitake skewer and loved it so much I ordered more. The miso cod was great and the miso eggplant was so absolutely delicious it even made my brother an eggplant fan. We look forward to our next visit!

Tables too close together, food is amazing, service is so bad, if you are in a good mood they will seriously ruin it. They rarely check in with you. They NEVER bring the things you ask for. Like I love spicy mayo and everytime I ask for extra it takes them an extra business day to bring it to me (which is after I have to ask for it for the 3rd time, not exaggerating). They don’t refill your empty waters until you’re so thirsty you just have to ask yourself. Do not count on this place for a quick dine in because they take forever too. Only good thing is the sushi and that’s the only reason I go there. I always see people doing pick up orders so I would recommend everyone do that so you don’t have to experience things like this.

Went on recommendation but our server was uninterested and not focused Two things not ordered properly and we are sure she forgot to put in one main dish and when it finally came it was undercooked Left hungry and no apology on her part Food that we did have generally could have had more flavour It was just ok. Was a big let down Nice place though to sit outside!

Unfortunately, our experience ended on a very uncomfortable note. After we had already paid our bill, Brandon the manager approached us infront of other customers to confront us about not leaving a tip. We were told that we were “not welcome back” if we didn’t tip and that he had essentially “paid for our meal” because no tip was left.

Regardless of personal views on tipping, confronting guests after payment and making statements like this is unprofessional and inappropriate. Tipping should never involve pressure, guilt, or intimidation.

If you are being paid below minimum wage because tips are expected.
That shifts the employer’s responsibility onto the customer.

That’s not the customers fault.

If your restaurant restaurant can’t operate without shaming guests into subsidizing wages, that’s a business model problem, not a moral failure on our part.

We paid the full listed price for our meal and left feeling uncomfortable rather than appreciated as customers. I’m sharing this so others are aware of how tipping is handled here and can decide for themselves

Our server Margo was magnificent! She thoroughly explained the menu, gave astute recommendations, and she was a joy to speak with because she is so personable and professional. The food was spectacular, especially the orange hamachi, all the sushi rolls, and the lava cake is out of this world!

I loved this place. I've been to katana several times but this time I got a chance to ask the waiter for his opinion on what I should order and boy he did not miss a beat. Im not really a sashimi person but I took the waiter's recommendation and it was sooooo good. Definitely will return. It was a halibut fluke sashimi I believe...

Good food really nice people that work there and it doesn't take forever like at another sushi restaurant

Service is bad when they get slammed on a weekend. My last time there, we waited for a table, then we ordered drinks (for me, warm sake). FINALLY got edamame, then a long time for our simple rolls. I asked the waiter several times for my sake, but he'd forget. I finally got the sake at the tail end of my meal. Waitstaff is friendly but seem distracted. I'd hate to see this place go under, but they need to up their game. STAT.

From the moment you walk in the experience begins, the ambiance is very nice. Dim lit room, great customer service, outdoor seating available. All with music subtly playing in the back low enough to enjoy a conversation, yet loud in enough to make the moment stand out. Food was amazing, service was beyond great.

Our server did not check on us right away. We sat there twiddling our thumbs while a large party of 9 was getting attention few times before we even got greeted (mind you right next to them). After ordering we told the server that we will keep a menu and order again in a bit. Appetizer and drinks took a while then sushi came right after the apps. The drink presentation was rushed and one of the drinks failed to light or even ignite for smoke aesthetics. We finished our entree and we had to ask the person clearing plates to find our server we because it took a while just sitting there again no service not even once did she check on us to see how the first entree was. Even after telling the table cleaners to flag down our server she passed by twice to the large party and once behind us to a couple and all 3 times didn't look our way and the large party of 9 was so loud and laughing that the server couldn't hear us. She finally came and took the order. The second entree took even longer to make than the first and we ordered less! For the price, and the loud chaos it wasn't worth it even though the sushi was delicious!
