Burrata was cold. The grits were off. The mushroom trio had like some marinara sauce or something weird. I’m guessing that this is a place for beef or venison.
The service was outstanding! The downside was that the food ( the lamb) - although delicious - was overcooked for us. … If you go, consider ordering it rarer than you actually want.
Hearthstone is our go to place in Breckenridge and really Summit County. We most often go during the shoulder seasons with their set menu as it can be a bit expensive but anytime we have been, the food and everything else has been terrific. The best lamb chops this side of Ireland (or New Zealand), mushroom salad, the elk is my wife's favorite and incredible and just everything is superb. Add Santiago the best best server in Colorado and it is a great night. Food top, wine selection top, service top and atmosphere top. A great experience.
Walking into the restaurant felt like stepping back into a memory—one that hadn’t faded with time, but had only deepened. We were celebrating a birthday, and the atmosphere set the tone: nestled in a tiny Aspen grove, with twinkling lights overhead and the sun setting over the mountains. It felt like a secret moment suspended in time.
We started with their signature beet bread, warm and tender, served with a salted butter so good it stopped conversation. A barrel-aged Manhattan rounded it out—smooth, balanced, and just the right kind of celebratory.
Our server was not only warm and attentive, but deeply knowledgeable. He’d personally tried every wine on the list and had even visited many of the vineyards. He recommended the most perfect wine pairing—an incredible bottle from Oregon that matched the meal in both flavor and feeling.
I ordered the elk—just as I remembered it from nearly fifteen years ago. And remarkably, it was exactly the same. The kind of dish that imprints itself on you, so tender and perfectly prepared that it feels less like a meal and more like a homecoming.
To start, I had the asparagus mushroom salad—earthy hazel trumpet mushrooms and asparagus cooked with care, kissed with parsley and citrus zest. Delicate, simple, but vibrant. Then came the massaman curry: fall-apart tender, with a sauce so rich and layered it demanded silence between bites. The blackberry elk was the star, of course—sweet and tender, luxurious and wild all at once. The wine brought it all together like a chord resolving.
Though we insisted we were too full for dessert, the staff quietly brought out a warm brownie with a candle—rich, gooey, and full of warmth, just like the service. Classy, thoughtful, never overbearing. The kind of attentiveness that feels like care, not performance.
There’s something extraordinary about returning to a restaurant decades later and finding not just consistency, but evolution. In 35 years of service, they’ve kept their soul and their standard. A life-changing culinary experience, once again.
I wanted to love this place based on what dome of the locals had said. The food was presented beautifully. Our waiter and all the staff were m polite. However, the food was underwhelming in my opinion. My husband loved his Elk. I had the Cod- very plain. My daughter had the steak tips off the kids menu- plain. My son liked his steak- but said it didn't compare to the Waygu he had just had at a high end restaurant in Minneapolis. For the pricing- i expected more. Didnt meet the mark unfortunately.
Brandon was an outstanding server, very warm, welcoming, and professional. He really knows his stuff! Made our evening fun and special. The establishment itself is an institution in town, a must go for visitors, perfect for a date night or celebration with friends and family. worth the price!
Started with the ahi tuna and beef tips which were both unique and rich with flavor. For my entree I had the bison short ribs which were absolutely incredible. Rest of the table had the rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, and blackberry elk, none of which disappointed in the slightest. Finished off with some sticky toffee pudding that was to die for. One of the best all around meals I have ever had.
Beautiful mountain views and excellent location. The food was good quality with very fair portion sizes. The service was impeccable - all the servers were incredibly attentive and gracious. We went for our anniversary and received complimentary champagne, which we thought was a thoughtful touch. It’s the kind of restaurant that has become increasingly rare nowadays. It's a place where you can truly be present and enjoy a meal with the company you’re with. It’s not just about sitting down, eating, and leaving. You can savor both the food and the experience. We would gladly return and recommend it to anyone!

Over all very good
The owner of this establishment are fighting hard to make sure their tipped staff get $4 reduction in pay through the bill HB25-1208. Truly disgusting to do this when workers already suffer through a tough economy!

Our server James made our night amazing.
We were seated close to the iconic window and had a beautiful mountain view. If you can, I would suggest making a reservation before sunset so you can still see the mountains.
We had the wagyu steak and it was incredible! The best part was that James knew every detail about the menu so we knew were going to love what we got. Not to mention, he was extremely accommodating for a gluten and nut allergy.
Overall a great experience and would come back as soon as possible!
