You're better off at City Market. There's no self checkout and they'll have 2 registers open in the middle of the day. I've put food back and walked out multiple times just to avoid the lines. They don't always have what you need in stock. A lot of food is overpriced. 2 weeks in a row and no whole milk that was on sale. Limited bread selection. Sale items won't be available or the coupons won't be in the app. Scan, search, nada.. Store is full of employees but none are qualified to run a register.
Was not very stocked or busy at 7pm. We asked for some items that they did not have on the shelves. First response was the courtesy clerk was on lunch. I looked at the other 4 cashiers standing around talking to each other. 2nd response was , try at City Market or Walmart. Guess that was where all the customers were at .... City Market or Walmart.
Great sales! Fish counter lady goes above and beyond for you! Produce and meat best in town. Helpful grocery sackers, always offer to help. Thank you guys for the work you do for us!
The parking lot is more accessible compared to the other options in town. The layout of the store is also easy to navigate. More often than not I'm expected to bag my own groceries because the cashiers refuse to do it. Then they get upset if I don't pay right away because I'm busy bagging. This location could benefit from self-check out lanes since customers are already expected to do the cashier's job.
Tried to order some fried chicken at the deli yesterday.. waited for 20 minutes w ..... (comment erased)
ONE YEAR LATER .. I have started going back into this Safeway store on over 30 occasions over the last 6 months. I have noticed a 100% improvement in the staff, the service and the availability of good produce and meat. There have not been congregations of employees/smokers at the corners of the building out front and the store seems more busy all the time now. I am always treated well and greeted by the cashiers. However, they do have a strenuous and stressful job at times, so be kind to them, and they in turn are rejuvinated and pass that kindness on. Thank you to the Management for addressing the previous issues. It has obviously worked well.
First time I've ever used their pick up on line orders. Love it!!
Love Safeway...
Nice clean grocery store with plenty of great produce and selection. There is plenty of parking available and lots of space if you have a trailer. They do sport a decent beer selection and have some items that just can't get a Kroger store. The parking lot is less nuttier than the Kroger store in town. For a small town they have a good selection of bean sprouts and pita bread if that's a thing your into.
Safeway is a nice place. People are very happy to help. Butchers have helped me a lot just me and husband so I ask them to cut meat to smaller size. We can not eat 3lbs of meat, but I buy the whole 3lbs.
Checkers are most unfriendly.

Probably one of the most "needs help" Safeways we've ever been to. Not a disaster, but just not up to par with others we've been to. Produce bins were empty or had bad looking vegetables. Salads were bloating and had today's expiration date. No self checkout. Surprised they had baggers, but they didn't bag properly. I always put merchandise on belt the way it should be packed. Cold together, heavy on bottom first. I've bagged off/on for 35 yrs in this business before retiring from it.
Without the knowledge of how the store is ran, it looked like much stocking was being done MID day. Possibly due to late truck, etc. I've been there. But expired food should be pulled at night. This saves your bad reviews later. If you don't have the salary to do this at night, then the "salaried" managers should work late.
As I type this, my wife just told me the bagger didn't bag our Fritos. Probably tossed them aside and forgot to put them in cart. How often is this happening to other customers?
I guess we'll be stopping by there with travel trailer in tow in get our chips as we leave Cortez.
We usually shop Albertsons in Durango, but was passing through Cortez. I was in the meat department and Brutus came out to great me. He asked if there was anything he could help me find. I told him what I was looking for and it was in the ad. He knew exactly what I was talking about and helped me choose some of the most beautiful ribeyes. He is such a nice gentleman with excellent customer service. I will definitely return when I’m in Cortez. Thank you, Brutus. ❤️
Great store quality products and friendly cashiers. They have great sales, I highly reccommend you download the app register your phone number and add coupons.
